Pacific Marquis Spa Pump Question

We have a Pacific Marquis Epic spa, Pump #1 is making a very loud noise. Pump #1 is a two stage pump. We were wondering if it is the pump going out or maybe the impeller. Pump #2 is fine. Pump #1 is a Baker-hydro Hydron, Model #34B3147 2" inlet & outlet/240 volt side discharge. We can't seem to find the horsepower for the motor, can enyone tell us where it is on the motor without tearing it all apart? It doesn't say what horsepower the motor is on any of our paper work. The pump seems to be working ok, except for the very loud noise. (Our neighbor gave us this spa, and he is not sure).

If anyone can offer any help, it would be appreciated.

The Aqua Flo FMHP is a direct replacement for that pump. In the presence of a spinning shaft and a loud grind, you have a bearing gone bad. If you see water dripping from the pump shaft when it runs, or rust/corrosion in that area, it failed due to lack of maintenance.

That number you gave does not pop up anywhere so the best bet is to pull the pump, have the impeller removed and the number on it can be used to determine horsepower.

Thank you for the help.

Here is a picture of the pump in question. And it does drip a little water, besides the noise.

We looked up the pump on the web site and noticed that the frames are different. Would this be a problem?

The spa is 18 years old and sat for a couple of years unused.

Mine is getting filled as we speak and the area will continue to be a work in progress with an Ivory travertine patio floor down the road. This is a modest existing pool remodel. We took out the silly spa with its four puny jets, odd size, and no light and made it into a conversation niche. In the before design you couldn’t heat up the spa without heating up the entire pool. Surface- Wet Edge New Zealand Tropical- peal matrix but with the deeper blue/green dye used in the Chilean Tahoe. The last picture with spa and orange coping is the Before .

I was thinking the Spa was pretty expensive, the rest was not bad. I have to clarify what the Stamped Coping and Cantilever edge charges include also. I do not know any Gunite installers in the area, I was set on a Liner, but might get a quote for Gunite, it looks like it is not that much more. I was worried about Gunite in New England. I want to thank everyone of you who has replied to my post. Your advice is invaluable! Scott- You raise alot of good questions. Here are the answers to some of them, and the rest I need to find out from the perspective builder. 1) I completely agree that I need to upgrade to the 400 heater, and will be doing so. 2)The N2. I thought that the purpose of this would be to cut down on the chlorine usage, which in turn would help with your concern about the Dichlor tabs adding too much stabilizer. Am I wrong about this? 3)Switching to the Pentair Rainbow. I took a look at this, and I wonder would it provide me with enough chlorine for the size of pool I have? I think this pool should be about 37,000 gallons. 4)Salt Cell- I can choose this option over N2 + Dichlor dispenser. My wife is worried about salt taste and corrosion. I will be using concrete decking. Are her concerns legit, and what of my two options would you suggest? 5)Remotes- It is an Easy Touch 4 wireless. Didn't think I needed an indoor as well, since I have the wireless. 6)PVC- I assumed two inch hard piping, but I guess I shouldn't assume. Returns- I don't know the number. What do you suggest, and I will make sure it happens. 7) Dump site- Unknown location, but in that I live in the Chicago Metro area I believe that it shouldn't be an issue, but I definately need to make sure. 8)Water Chems- You statement here really concerned me, because I am completely new to pools. Is this due to the size of the pool, and how often would you suggest. I certainly don't want to spend all my time testing/fixing chemical readings. 9)Final Cleanup- I thought that this just went unsaid, but I see that I need to get everything written down in the contract. 10)Decking- They wanted $7.50 sq/ft for brushed concrete, and $15 for stamped/pavers. I know this is really high, so I opted to handle the decking on my own. 11) Repairs to damaged property. I am fortunate enough to have a vacant lot next to mine, and I think I will be able get permission to access my yard via this lot. This should really help me with the damage to lawn, driveway, sprinklers, etc. That being said I need to speak with the perspective builder about this section. 12)References- I have three friends who have built pools with this builder, and all have given glowing reviews. jump427, cnr1089, and rice rocket- I see that I definately need to address the payment schedule. I too was a little nervous over this. Glad to see my concerns weren't unjust. I will negotiate this process with the builder. Also cnr1089, My yard is level, so I shouldn't have much grading issues. As for the damage, I live in a newer subdivision, and fortunatly have a vacant lot next to mine. I should be able to get permission to access my lot via this vacant lot, and this will greatly cut down on the damages. I will make sure to use JULIE (Illinois version of "Dig Safe) to avoid any utility damages. Again, thanks to all of you who are following/replying to my post. Even in this early stage of the process things can get a bit confusing. Two more questions I'm hoping you can help me with. Currently proposed is a 1.5 hp WhisperFlow pump. This would do the pool cleaning, as well as the water features (4 deck jets + T7 diving board waterfall). Will this pump be sufficient, or should I add a seperate pump for the water features. Also, do you think the price on the initial proposal if fair, or is too high? I don't have alot of experience, and your advice on this would go a long way in helping me negotiate a price. How efficient is a heat pump? https://www.cooling-heating.org/ An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) will typically produce around 3kW thermal energy for every 1kW of electrical energy consumed, giving an effective “efficiency” of 300%. It is thermodynamically impossible to have an efficiency of more than 100%, as this implies that more energy is being produced than is being put in. For this reason the performance is expressed as a Coefficient of Performance (COP) rather than an efficiency. The above example would be expressed as having a COP of 3. The reason that it appears that more energy is being produced than is consumed, is because the only “valuable” energy input is electricity used to drive the compressor and circulating pumps. The remainder of the energy simply transferred from a heat source that would otherwise not be used (such as the ambient air, ground or a river) so is not considered as an energy input. While the term Coefficient of Performance (CoP) is commonly used, it is important to understand the differences in order that the heat pump will work successfully, and to be able to compare different models that might be using different measures. It's the plumbing config that you need to look at first. I'd say you'll need a measurement on the new pump from intake union to the end of the motor. You don't have a lot of room there but it looks like it would fit. I don't have the measurements on the fmhp in front of me. The big thing I see is that you appear to have a standard union on the current pump intake and most new ones will have a pump union. The threads are not the same. You also have that small line which usually needs drilled out on the new housing. Remember, that leak is certainly the cause of your failure so you need to keep on top of those things.

Here is a link to the model and they can probably get you the overall size but you still need the HP first.

I just found this thread and wanted to add that I have what appears to be the same exact spa. I just took the pump out and saw that the HP is on a plate on the backside. Mine is marked 1 1/2 - 1/5.

Looks like I have the same exact pump too, with a Franklin Electric Pool Motor with a HP of 1-1/2, with a 56J Frame. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a new pump/motor?

Will the AquaFlow FMHP still work?

Hi Folks. Funny I should land on this site. I DESIGNED THE Baker Hydro pump !!! That was many years ago but i will share.

The HYDRON was designed for pool and spa applications. The size of the impeller set load. We used many Motor manufactures during it's life span. Century, Franklin, G.E. etc.

It was about best bang for the buck. Business stuff K, anyways, The impeller was made from glass filled Noryl. The Back shell and front housing are glass filled ABS.

NOW THE IMPORTANT STUFF:

We made a design change about 1980. The seals reversed position !!!!!! In most pumps the Ceramic side in located on back side and the Impeller holds the spring loaded carbon side. What we found is that if a pump was starved of water the back then Ceramic seal would heat up to the point of a failure on back plate. So, I reversed the seals. Patented at that time thank you.

Now with the impeller holding the ceramic seal and with Noryl having much higher temperature withstand than the ABS and now the carbon loaded seal for the opposite side gained benefit too. The heat generated by the friction between seals was not easily transmitted via spring. Also added at that time a small mold change the had a port 1/8" or so that bleed water from outlet back to inlet and directed at seals for further cooling.

BOTH TYPES SHARE SAME SEAL SET BUT CAN APPEAR WRONG.

ANY PUMP WILL WORK. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO EXCEED THE RATINGS OF THE ONE ONE ARE REPLACING. VOLTAGE AND AMPS IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. CLAIMED HP OR FLOW RATE IS NOT THE CONCERN!!

Load noises can be a couple of issues depending on your sensitive.

REALLY BAD NOISE. Most likely motor bearing went bad and may have damaged 'wet end'.

MODERATE NOISE: Most likely motor bearing went bad. Cheap to DIY.

LOW NOISE: Low Noise. Air intake or cavitation from pump starving. CHECK FILTERS!
