flex gas line to water heater?

Our old water heater is living on borrowed time (1985 Rheem), so I want to prepare for installing the next one (which will be my first). (It hasn't been flushed in the 8 years we've been here, if ever, so I'm afraid to even touch it. Sacrificial anode hasn't been checked either.

At this point, we've adopted the "wait until it fails" approach - so I hope it does so with a bit of leaky warning bells as opposed to "catastrophically". (yes, yes I know the risk, since the basement is newly finished, too. - shame on me.)

Anyway, for the new install, how do you get the union in the gas line to line up perfectly, heightwise? Can yellow flex gas line be used at all?

I suppose I can practice on our current one, since I found a small gas leak at one of the fittings (female-female coupling). It's a vertical piece fairly close to, and above the union, so I want to back it all out and redo it. As for getting it to line up again, what's the trick? Just tighten the heck out of it all, and then-some, if need be?

BTW, I have Hercules Pipe dope and rectorseal. Either is fine, right?

Whether or not you may use a flex line would be determined by your local code. Some codes require pipe the whole way.

If you are lucky the gas input on your new water heater will be at the same height at the old one and no adjustments for length would be necessary, however in most instances it will require changing.

The code requires a "Drip Stub" at the point were the vertical drop connects to the horizontal line into the water heater gas control.

Begin by attaching a length of pipe from the gas control horizontally to the point where the line will meet the vertical drop. At the junction end of that horizontal line you will install a Tee with the side opening of the tee connected to the horizontal line to the gas control. From the bottom of the Tee you install a 3" or 4" nipple with a cap on the opposite end. This forms the required "Drip Stub". You then measure the vertical height from the top of the Tee to the union and either install the appropriate nipple or if the length is greater than 12" you will have to have a piece of pipe custom cut and threaded to length. Keep in mind that when cutting the pipe you must allow for the length of the threads in the fittings too.

My personal preference is RectorSeal for gas lines.

Roughly how much does one adjust the measurement for the threads? It's 1" O.D. black pipe (is that the proper terminology?

If you go with any sort of solar system, make sure it has a gas backup and not electric. My energy costs went up $100/month when I added our solar system down here in San Diego. I am now getting it corrected with the installation of a small gas tankless unit, using the solar storage system as a pre-heater. If you're building the home then many of the traditional drawbacks of tankless don't apply to you. You can build in the correct gas line and venting from the start. If I were in your shoes I'd probably go tankless (30 percent tax credit this year -- see the stimulus law or visit www.energystar.gov). If a single unit won't handle your demand then get two. And plumb it with the small tank system (10 gallon) for recirculation and to overcome any sandwich problems. This approach has been detailed in this forum somewhere.

You likely don't have a power vented furnace. Your mid-eff furnace will have an inducer motor that is there only to overcome the resistance when it is initailly creating draft. It induces draft, it doesn't create pressure in your venting, which will spill out your HWT. If you post your furnace make and model, we can confirm this. You can have a mid-eff furnacce and HWT share a common vent. It is perfectly legal and safe. If you have a newer built home, or one that is sealed well, or your appliances are spilling, you should have combustion air brought into the area with the furnace and HWT. It is as simple as running an insulated pipe from outside to inside. The pipe must be sized properly. Splillage could also be cause by a blocked vent, oversized chimney, undersized chimney, or a deteriated chimney. These are all easily diagnosed by a HVAC proffesional. You should call one ASAP. Your life may depend on it.

Code requires that both the water heater PRV discharge line and the furnace condensate line must either terminate to free air outside the structure or into an approved "indirect waste receptor" The termination point of a PRV discharge line must point downward. When extending a pipe through a footer wall we must install a 90deg elbow on the end of the line to turn it downwards. (This is to minimize the risk of scalding water spraying out of the line and hitting someone standing near the point of discharge) Under the IRC when terminating outdoors the line must terminate within 6" of finished grade. Under the UPC it must terminate between 6" and 24" above finished grade. When terminating into the house DWV system or a storm drain system such as you have the PRV line must terminate a minimum of 2" above the flood level rim of the drain receptor, whether that is a floor drain, utility sink or a sump vessel. (The intended purpose of the 2" air gap is to prevent bacteria from entering the line and potentially going up the line and into the heater vessel.) In your case, you could install a tee on the storm drain line and stub a section of the storm drain up slightly above grade, then mount your PRV discharge line pointing down into the open standpipe. Just make sure that the bottom of the PRV line is 2" above the highest level of the riser from the tee. (Note, your 4" line is a storm drain therefore you are not required to install a P-trap below the riser.)

I know about the electrical, that's why I didn't want to go that way. I believe the run to were it splits to go to the heater and washer is about 12'. My issue with the whole thing is that a majority of houses in the US and Canada (from what I can tell) use 1/2 gas lines for the water heaters. Don't we have the technology to make it simpler to install them? Just frustrated that I am most likely going to have to have a plumber come out and install a bigger line.

BTW, is there something that can be applied to the margin of a fitting to stop a tiny leak? (Don't think so, but I just have to ask.)

I would almost bet that if you were to measure that line with a caliper you would find it is 0.864" OD, not 1". On the other hand, ALL PIPE is defined by its internal diameter (ID).

Galvanized iron pipe, Black iron pipe, PVC pipe, CPVC pipe, Brass pipe and Bronze pipe are all made to the IPS(Iron Pipe Standard) which is defined in tables called schedules and they all have the same dimensions.

Nearly all local codes still require GAS to be run with Schedule 40 Black Iron Pipe, although both the International Residential Code and Uniform Plumbing Code also approve Galvanized Iron pipe.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to seal a leak by applying any topical material to the pipe. Disconnect the joint, clean the threads throughly, then apply new dope and reconnect the pipe.

Do not take this caution lightly. Just two nights ago there was a 3br home near hear that blew up from a propane leak. The house was completely leveled. There were four people sleeping in the house when it happened and they are now all in a burn unit with burns over 50 to 70% of their bodies and two are not expected to live. It simply is not worth the risk when working with gas lines.
