My Aleksander had bad allergies that were mostly controlled with diet and immunotherapy shots. But he still had issues during certain times a year. I'd give him about a 1 mg/kg dose twice a day, then skip a couple of days, and if he needed it give it again. Pretty much just as needed. But I didn't have to give it continuously after I started the immunotherapy. Aleksander had severe liver reactions to pred- his ALKP went up over 10 times normal even when I dosed him as above, and it lasted for months afterwards. But in the long run, he did better with a short quick burst of pred rather than long term lose doses. And his liver was never truly hurt by it, just messed up his bloodwork.

Like others here have suggested, it might be nothing at all. But I feel I have to also offer further advice. Not meaning to get you overly concerned, but I would take her to your vet just to get her thoroughly checked out and make sure it is not the start of anything. My beloved male cat was 7 years old when he started that same kind of vomiting 6 years ago. He would vomit undigested food or partially digested food just maybe every week or 10 days. Gradually, his vomiting increased but I was not overly concerned because he seemed fine otherwise, the vomiting was not "that often" I thought, and he never lost any weight. Also, other people who had had more cats than I and for a longer period of time, told me "cats just vomit---that is what they do". (According to what I have since learned, that is not entirely true.) Finally, when the vomiting had increased to more frequently than it had been, I took him to the vet and that particular vet said, "he was not concerned" since my cat was "not losing weight" and in fact "was slightly overweight". He didn't really suggest further testing but suggested he was allergic to something in his food and to just try different foods. I did that for a few years with success some days and not others. Meanwhile, the vomiting never stopped but slowly increased in frequency. By last year, the vomiting had increased to at least every day and he did start losing weight as well as starting to get some diarrhea, so I took him to a different vet. To make a long story short, she sent us to a regional small animal hospital to an Internal Medicine Vet who did all kinds of tests. They think that he originally for most of those years had Inflammatory Bowel Disease, but that it eventually "morphed" into Lymphoma. He is getting chemo and large doses of steroids every day, but they still say he only has about maybe 12 to 16 months left. I feel so bad and wonder if I had taken him to a more responsive vet in the beginning, and sooner, if things would have turned out differently and if I could have avoided the years of irritation to his bowel where IBS turned into lymphoma. Again, I don't want to scare you since it may be nothing more than your cat eating too fast. But, I am compelled to tell you my story since I wish someone had said this to me 5 or 6 years ago.

Hello All, I have some sad news to share with you all. After Ruby stopped eating last week, we were asked to make an appointment with a surgeon to do an exploratory abdominal surgery. We took her in yesterday, June 1st, the surgeon opened her up and called with in five minutes, saying that the tumor had spread to majority of her intestines and was inoperable. He also mentioned that it seemed to have metastasized as the lymph nodes are swollen. His suggestion was to put her out of her misery. Having seen Ruby go through a very rough weekend, where she was constantly vomiting and suffered from Diarrhea , we decided to put her to sleep. She was a wonderful friend and companion and will be dearly missed. The kids and the family are having a rough time digesting the news...as we were never told she had cancer..all the biopsies were negative...and she was being treated for ulcer..and all of sudden she deteriorated in a week. She never lost any weight..may be a pound or so..but that's it. All her vitals were perfect. The blood tests were impeccable. Yet she was so sick..Poor thing she suffered a great deal. The easiest way to approach diarrhea is to first classify it as acute vs chronic (your cat has chronic diarrhea), and then to classify it large bowel or small bowel diarrhea, or both. Here's how to tell the difference between large and small bowel diarrhea: Small bowel diarrhea: Weight loss, polyphagia, vomiting, abdominal distension, halitosis common; normal to increased frequency of defecation; increased volume, no mucus or hematochezia (bright red blood) Large bowel diarrhea Weight loss, polyphagia, vomiting, abdominal distension, halitosis uncommon; increased frequency of defecation, normal-decreased volume, mucus present, hematochezia present Then you work through the list of differentials and test for or eliminate each one as a cause for your cat's diarrhea. Some things are easier to diagnose than others- parasites are easy when present, food allergy or irritable bowel syndrome usually requires intestinal biopsy for example. First thing I'd do is make sure you know your cat is FeLV and FIV negative; those are fatal diseases and may affect your decision to pursue further diagnostics. FeLV can cause GI lymphoma in very young cats, so I would be especially sure you weren't dealing with an FeLV positive cat who frankly has no hope for recovery before allowing the cat to suffer further and for you to waste money on more diagnostics and treatment. Your vet can test for FeLV and FIV with a few drops of blood and a 10 minute SNAP test while you wait. In any dog or cat with diarrhea, I deworm with 3-5 days of fenbendazole regardless of stool tests. Parasites don't always shed eggs into the sample you get. Sometimes I also treat for coccidia with ponazuril if I have strong suspicions even if I can't get a sample or don't see any in the sample. It doesn't hurt to deworm and may solve the problem. You can't test for giardia, coccidia, and bacteria by a sample from home. It must be FRESH and examined immediately, because once those bugs stop moving, it's almost impossible to find them. And no bacteria is just as bad as a bacterial overgrowth, but I can't believe anything they say regarding bacteria in an old sample anyway. I always give probiotics to patients with diarrhea to help re-establish normal intestinal flora. I hope you can get to the bottom of this soon. Diarrhea is no fun for your cat or for you.
