Just had another earthquake or aftershock

My chair was shaking like crazy here in the office. DH called and said he could hear the wood cracking under the pressure. That was freaky.

I'm in central Illinois, and we felt it too. My ceiling fans bobbled up and down and wall creaked like with a very high wind. The early/big one was scary, but I can see no damage, thank God.

Ok, so I feel much better about the reported rainfall. The Mesonet says I've only gotten 1.69 inches in the last 7 days. My rain gauge says 2.75 and that's after not checking it for a couple of days. I know that we really had heavy rain, wind & hail Monday nite after the last 4.7 quake. Poor Chandra is going to be putting up his backyard fence again and fixing his kids' playhouse. It all came tumbling down again. He's got a great outlook! He's thankful his garden was done and not full of new plants! On the subject of quakes - I've been being a "geek" and reading everything I could find on them as they pertain to our region. My fear was the catastrophes that happen in Japan, Turkey, California, Alaska, etc. The re-assuring thing I've found on several sites is that they don't expect that to happen here as the earth's layers in this part don't have a "tectonic" layer. I understood it to be a big contributor to those areas that are prone to distructive quakes. I really believe that now because I read Turkey had another one today that registered 5.7 and it toppled an 6 story hotel. That country must have really poor building codes. None the less, I still don't want to experience anything like that 5.6 we had Saturday nite. My house shook so bad I couldn't stand up to even GET to a table to crawl under. Since all this started (on the upside!) I've notice a huge decrease in gopher activity so I'm hoping all their tunnels collapsed! Paula

Glad to hear from you - hope you and your kitties are OK. I'm on the opposite coast, but had relatives in Santa Monica for a while. A 3.4 hit while I was there once. Don't know where the epicenter was, but it sure was scary to me. I have never heard so much noise from so much quiet. There was an strange silence that just didn't seem right, afterward. My cousin lived on the top floor of a a 7 story condo bldg, right next to the highway - I think the 5. I saw a VW and a semi drive by, but I kept hearing a strang noise - like a lot of cars were driving by. Then, the silence. I love your state and would love to live there. But, the quakes would drive me nuts. Hope that's the last one - or at least not an immediate forecast. Stay safe!!

I'm trying yet again to reply on here but it keeps doing strange things when I preview message! They've had more aftershocks today, in fact one was about 5 something on the richter scale and really frightened alot of people. With so many buildings already damaged each aftershock just adds to their instability. Anne we're in Auckland which is (luckily) a long way from Christchurch but this could just as easily have happened here. Warm fuzzy alert!! A University student started a Facebook page to rally other students to get out there and help. Over 300 turned up with boots on and shovels at the ready and have been clearing away silt and rubble from suburban streets! That's community spirit for you!

Another oil producing activity can cause small earthquakes and that is "water drives". It does similar things to the deep earth structure, but may not as severe as fracking. However, water drives continue over a long period of time. Waste liquid from producing wells is forced down a spent well or wells at the edge of an oil dome forcing flow through the strata toward the upper part of the oil dome. This drives the remaining oil toward the producing wells and gets rid of the crappy liquid left over from a producing well. The waste water is supposed to be put back into the oil bearing strata from whence it came, but I suspect there are instances where it goes elsewhere. Water from an oil well is filled with noxious crud and will ruin water wells if it escapes into the aquifer supplying these wells.

Peoria and Bloomington, are you that far north? I live in north central Indiana. I felt the quake early
this morning, but nothing since.

I am in the Quad Cities and we are about 250 miles from the epi center they are saying this one is a 4.5

Frostedc, I'm about 100 miles south east of Peoria, and about 60 miles north of epicenter now stated as Mt. Carmel, Illinois which is on the border of Indiana, just across Wabash river is Vincennes, IN. It appears not much structural damage reported from any of the state that felt it. The last report I heard- about 8:30 AM that it was revised from a 5.4 to a 5.2 on the Richter scale.

Sometime the aftershocks can be stronger than the quake. You may be feeling little trimbles for a couple of days.

I haven't talked to Dean yet today to see if he felt anything at 4:30 this morning....he is usually awake by then. Bonnie from WHO radio in Des Moines said she was sitting at her desk and felt the first one!

Talked to my oldest son who goes to Vincennes U.
He said the first time he thought it was a train, rolled over and went back to sleep. The second one, he was sitting on the porch of his frat - He said "It was way cool" No damage was done either time.
