Guess who came for breakfast? (Dark, Handsome, and Feathered?_

Wes is taking Sam to southern Minnesota for a VJP puppy test this weekend; it's a "Deutsch Drahthaar thing".

He has the truck rumbling in the driveway and is loading up enough gear for a month-long expedition. Sam is dashing about being the versatile hunting goof-ball 68-lb. puppy he is, and I'm banging out the front door to bring Wes a j@cket.

I naturally look toward the Purple Martin pole and here he comes; an ASY (After Second Year = fully mature) male is coasting in to the gourd rack. At the last minute, probably due to all the noise and confusion we three were causing within 40' of the pole, he swooped up, between Wes and I who were maybe 20' apart, and perched on the very top of my huge maple by the garage.

I dashed back in the house to get the CD player and pop in "Daytime Chatter." (Recorded sounds from an active PM colony. It makes the newly arriving birds feel at ease.) By the time I did that Wes had gone and the Purple Martin had zoomed off.

I'm not worried; "He'll be back!"

I am so glad I opened three compartments last night. I "thought" I heard PMs three times yesterday; I "think" I did!

I've made a pot of tea; I have my sunglasses. I'm going out to open a few more gourds and then I'm sitting in the outd0or breakfast area until my flock comes in.

How exciting. Isn't it funny how perfectly intelligent and mature people can lose their heads over wildlife with brains the size of peas?

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try countryrosegirl. I know our yard wouldn't look like it does if the 2 of us didn't work as a team to make it so. Be aware that Deb says I am sexy and I know she is just saying that to be kind to an old man :) Pauline, I couldn't believe how Deb had been treated when we met. One of my proudest moments was when her 5 year old son asked her why she didn't cry all the time anymore :) I should note that I have received much more than I have given in our relationship. I consider myself (know I am) the lucky one. Leslie, I was just teasing Harry. I knew what he meant :) Funny thing is.... I knew when I met Deb that she would find someone better for her and get tired of putting up with my ornery, uuhhh, self. I knew I was shooting myself in the foot giving her ego a boost. Advertising how wonderful she was would make that happen faster but she deserved so much more than the treatment she was getting. Had to do the right thing by her even though it would cost me. Could not imagine her putting up with me a year. 23 years should qualify her for sainthood LOL. Florence, the more self confident she becomes.... the more attractive she is :) Princess Debbie, I like the sound of that. Thank you Seil, Deb says Hot Romance looks great.... I think you got me in trouble :) She says Sweet Arlene is a sexy rose. I was told that I agree with her when I rolled my eyes. What have I done? digger

I love this family too and have received an email from Hosta Fever to say that I can pick up the rest of my order, which she was able to fill...still waiting on a couple. You ready? Heading the list is . . . .none other than . . . CATHEDRAL WINDOWS - (she was sold out of last year) COLD HEART (also sold out last year) MARY MARIE ANN (remember a thread about name Mary associated with breast cancer? My sister's name was Mary and she passed away in 2002 from a 10-yr battle with breast cancer. This hosta is a memorial hosta for me. :-) RASCAL (also sold out last year) RHINO HIDE (just have to have a Don Rawson hosta!) Still awaiting notification on Squash Casserole (for Mocc of course, who else? Lol) and Dark Shadows. Neptune also crept in after seeing Myrle post her absolutely sublime Neptune today (yesterday now). That woman sure knows how to grow them and present them in fine form in pictures. I have to see if Hosta Fever has that one. If so, it's coming home too! :-) Funnthsun, you make me smile, chuckle and laugh right out loud, sometimes all those at the same time! 300 or more hostas you say? Oh my, and they sure look like they like it where they are! Kudos. P.S. I snuck in some retail hosta therapy while out earlier. Another Diana Remembered because the first one got sunburned (she is temporary in hiding till she flushes new leaves); and a REAL Abiqua Drinking Gourd because the one I got weeks ago is quite lovely, but looks more like another Blue Angel. I could be wrong, but there is no cupping going on at all and leaves are convex. :-)

...if I went to see a movie, I would be noticing kitchens. lascatz, I do this all the time these days. I'm driving my hubby crazy! Congratulations on your happy news, spincrazy! Even though you now have a good reason to stick to a time line, try to follow lascatz and marthavila's advice and take a break, even if it's a small one. And it might not hurt to heed my hubby's advice. When I get stuck in a never-ending what-do-I-do quandary, he reminds me that "there comes a time in every project when you need to shoot the engineer and ship the product." ;-) Not that they actually do that (thank goodness since he's an engineer!) but his point is that we can fuss and fuss and fuss with a plan, thinking the perfect answer is just around the corner and we fail to realize that what we might be doing is just revisiting the same issues over and over and not making any progress at all. Besides, perfection isn't possible.

How could I forget country singer, Josh Turner? He was co-host in the last hour of the Today Show this morning...I'm so glad I saw it. Not only is he easy on the eyes, but he also has such a strong bass singing voice and his deep speaking voice is beyond charming. :)

There are now two ASY males and one ASY female on the gourds. One male has been in Gourd #3, singing his heart out, since he came in.

I opened six of the eight gourds on the top rack and three of the four on the bottom rack.

The ones I left sealed are out of my direct line of sight. I want to leave them closed unless I get way too many PMs.

Gotta love those Martins! Last year, we put our houses up late. This year, we went with gourds and put them up 2 weeks after the first scouts arrived. We have numerous second and after second year Martins all over the place! They do constant battle with the starlings but seem to have taken over all 12 gourds.

I love me some birds! Two days ago, I saw a Bald Eagle fishing in the lake across from my house. Later that afternoon, there was a osprey hanging around the like (osprey generally don't hang out in west TN).

It's a wonderful spring, so far.....but we're expecting some strong storms this weekend so we'll be watching the PM flock carefully.

I was happy to see morning doves return to my feeders this spring. Love the cooing sound they make. They must not be very smart birds though. One ran into the window pretty hard and I have streamers on the window to prevent that. My son and I get a kick over how they can't walk with out their heads moving too, like chickens do.... The Head bone must be connected to the foot bone.
