What goes good with a male kitten -- another male?

My kitten is an 8 month old neutered male and I am still debating getting another. If I do, do you think another male is ok? I would get a female but I have two young kids and for some reason, I think females stress out a lot easier then males.

My DD has 2 male cats(neutered) and they get along fine. She also has a male chihuahua that loves one of the cats and they sleep together.

We have 3 neutered males. All came at different times. There was a bit of hissing now and then along the road with each addition, but they eventually get along great. All 3 get along with 3 large dogs as well.

I have had male/female combos too. So I don't really think it matters much as long as everyone is fixed.

Treeguy: You have my sympathy. I Love eastern cottonwoods also. It is amazing to me how so many people miss the glories of this tree--Have they no eyes to see with? No ears to hear with? I grew up in a house in NJ that had a huge cottonwood outside my window--the glories of this tree defy my powers of description. The sound: on hot summer nights with hardly a breeze stirring, the leaves of this tree on their specially constructed vertically flat petioles allowed those leases to flutter so gently in almost no breeze--what a wonderful sound--almost like a gentle rain in the trees! And sight: just look at one of these trees on a hot summer afternoon in the hazy distance, again in a slight breeze--the wonderful living shimmer of it all! Sit under one when there leaves are all in motion--now in some ways I am a child of the "sixties" (I was a little old at the time) and know a little about the psychedelic craze and the strobe lights and other kinds of visual things people experimented with. Well, there was nothing, and is nothing like the dancing light under a cotton wood when the breeze is right! I could go on and on. And these trees get a bad rap for being weak--not really true (I posted about this earlier in detail) and a short life--again, not really true. They can make 70 to 100 years, or even more. That can work for me. And I was interested to learn from salicaceae that my "noreaster" is a hybrid. I had noticed the smaller leaves but I did not take the clue. For the best effects the larger leaves really help. I got some cuttings from another cottonwood in my area, but now I am wondering if that was not also a hybrid. What a nuisance--more people need to open their eyes and ears to the glories of this kind of tree and make it available. AAARRrruugh! If I were you in the current situation of no male cultivar being available, make a point of identifying a male tree in your area and get cuttings. If you don't have one identified yet, next year do it, and get the cuttings the next. But it may be possible to root one after the leaves come out. If you want to do this, I can share my ideas about how it might be done--or I am sure you could come up with a couple of things to try. It may work well. Anyway, it is worth the wait if that is what you have to do to have the process of identifying and then cloning your tree. --Spruce

Pam, One of my two juvies haven't used the feadr yet either. One has discovered it but is a bit skeptical. OMG, this is so funny! The exact thing happened to me. We found a tiny kitten walking in our back yard. We took "her" in, even took it to our vet for check-up and the vet pronounced our cat a female. We gave her a unisex sounding name "Suki". But Suki then grew two furry things on her back end and started to "hump" blankets and even acted very affectinately toward our female (spayed) dog. It was so funny. But we explained to our kids and everyone "got it". It wasn't a shock. Don't worry. Just be honest. It's hard to tell when animals are so young. Even a vet can make a mistake.

Thanks for all the help. I am going to try using one of those steraline tubs and cut a hole in the side for easy entry. I cant really move the box, the bathroom is to small and this box is in the only room that does not have carpet, there are several more down here in the basement but he does not come down here much. My two female cats stay down here most of the time (my office is down here) they do pick on him (they have claws) he outweighs them by a ton but he's kinda a wimp. So the 3 other cats use mostly the boxes down here but will also use "his" box upstairs. He does at times come down here and wee outside the boxes. It's a sealed concrete floor that slopes to a drain I can just wash down with water Yes we have seen him actually do the deed however he does often wee over the top of the box too. I noticed the health food store in town has that feliway and I will try that as well. I am laughing at the Prozac, maybe just give it to hubby instead LOL, seriously though will talk to the vet about it! Honestly this is hubbys favorite cat and the only one of the 4 HE brought home. .Abby is safe till spring at least, it is 0 outside now and the ground is frozen solid, I heard him tell Abby he better "get it together before he can dig him a hole" he calls him Junior so he really does love his cat.I have told hubby he will have to make that decision because I will not, his response was "you want me to make the decision so you can hate me forever for killing the cat" UUUGGGGG I wish the cat had a 401K, pension and SS......we would have no problem.

I have males who prefer the company of the other males and males who prefer the company of the females. I also have males who detest each other and males who avoid certain females like the plague. It really all depends on the individual personalities of the cats involved.

2 males :-) that's just my opinion though. I've just always liked their personalities more.

In my experience, males will often dominate females. All my cats have been spayed and neutered. I think it has to do with the male's larger size and general proclivity to dominate. Based on that, I would not mix a female in with a male, because my females were made pretty miserable, to the point I had to separate them while I left for the day.

I've never thought my males dominated the females.In fact the other way around. When my females don't want to play,which is most the time, they make in be known. That's why I think the OP should get another male.They might grow to be great buds who like the same activities.

My experience mirrors beeanne's. My males often like to push each other around, but NOBODY stands up to the girls. My girls can clear a room of those rowdy boys just by walking through it.

Having owned cats for many many years.Ii have always found males to get along better and accept a new comer easier then females. Most females have a attitude and they know how to use it!

My Sofie is very confident. But Simon Murphy attacks her and grabs her by the jugular. If I did not interfere he could hurt her. He has 3 pounds on her. I keep them separate.

So I am suggesting that because males tend to be larger, that is something to consider before you get another kitten.

I have 2 of each and they were all gotten at different times...One of the males, 2nd oldest, doesn't like one of the girls (we have no reason why) but most of the time all get along fine...I'd always thought once they were altered, it really didn't matter....But if anyone can figure out the workings of a cat and what makes them tick, that in itself would be a miracle....
So happy to hear you're thinking of getting another furbaby...I've worked with rescue organizations for some time and,not because I'm trying to get them adopted, but I firmly believe they need a buddy....

I also have 2 males. I seem to prefer male cats also but have had females in the past also.

I usually allow my newest cat to roam the house when the older resident is napping behind a closed door. That way they each get the scent of the other and let them meet under a door...sort of play that way and then when they are really ready to eat one day, place the feeding bowl away from each other and let them out.

After they eat they tend to be sort of satisified....they will fight a bit but allow the new cat to know that the other is the ALPHA male....top cat....Boss.....and that way the first resident knows that he is not being displaced.

The two girls are queen of the house here, too. (The oldest one is dubbed the Palace Princess). The girls don't bother the oldest male at all but the younger ones always walk waaaaay around the girls else they might get too close and get smacked. :)

The oldest female holds the others down to groom and they love it. Only when she's had her fill, they make a hasty retreat.
