first floor laundry drain
Comments (13)Well, I thought ours was plumbed into the main drain (actually I'm certain someone told me that), but it turns out that it goes to a stub under the deck. I happened to be under the laundry at the build for another reason today and noticed the line going out throught the rim joist. And yes, the pan is one inch deep. These pans aren't meant to catch a burst hose. They are meant to contain a leak from the machine itself. As far as admitting critters when the pipe terminates outside the house, that is easily solved with a slotted cap or section. Our current house has that arrangement. Bugs have never been an issue with it. It's up to the individual homeowners to decide for themselves whether the small amount of outside air that might enter via that route is too high a price to pay for the peace of mind the drain provides. Comments (8)The project was finished last week - here's what we did: A string was tied to the pipe under the floor to pull the drain into the steel pan. Added 1/2" thick cement board on top of existing 2 layers of 3/4 " thick plywood. 1/8" steel pan (3" high) with a shower drain attached was dropped in on top and leveled with shims. I decided not to slope. Used the string to pull the pipe into the drain. Got a plumber to add connections for the utility sink. I modified the dryer to vent out the side so it could fit in the closet space. Sink and washer/dryer were installed without problems....See MoreFloor drain for washing machine overflow drying out
Comments (9)The pan has a threaded connector to allow the pan to drain into the floor drain. The threaded connecter sits proud of the bottom of the pan by approx 1/8" so if I just pour water into the pan now and then, most will drain out but not all since the threaded drain creates a small lip (see attached photo for example. It also creates a potential opportunity for a leak which is why I'm not crazy about the idea of just pouring water in the pan. Instead I may snake a small 1/4" or 3/8" tube into the drain and have that run under the washing machine and up the back so I can fill it from up top and keep the pan pretty much dry. Anyway, I'm surprised I'm having to go through such a DIY solution as it seems like this would be a relatively frequent problem for this type of floor drain/pan setup....See MoreLaundry rooms and baths should be like a tub with a floor drain!
Comments (3)I put the shoe rack that came with the dryer into the laundry tub to keep stuff from blocking the drain. Haven't had an overflow since. BTW, we have a floor drain, but it didn't end up at the low point in the floor....See Moredavidandkasie
