do you know what version of windows it has on it?

I am going to guess it is xp. I will give you this link with instructions to try. If not successful there's other ways more complicated.

However if she has a wireless network and has both computers on it she should be able to access the files she needs through the network and easily transfer them from one pc to the other.

Sorry RC, I should have given you more info. Vista is the Windows version. I tried to search the link you provided using Vista rather than XP, but didn't find much help. It's the log in password that I don't have.

Scratch Windows version I gave you in previous post. It's Windows 7.

It should work basically the same for Vista you have to boot into safe mode and follow directions. from there use the administrator password icon user name as administrator password left blank then you can get to your control panel and accounts and edit your account password. it's good that you just lost the account login.

Everyone please please follow this super easy simple instructions for making your own password reset disc there's no reason not to do this as soon as you get a new computer. It takes literally a couple minutes and can save hours of frustration.

Does she not have wifi? seriously the easiest thing would be to go through the wifi network if both laptops are currently connected to it and access the files from the new laptop through the network and transfer them to it.

Here try this
Start system and when you See Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys Twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

I am trying to get around having you create a Linux iso disc that can be booted from and used but it might have to be. Do you or someone know how to burn an iso by chance?

No password reset disc. We're talking about a kid who was about 12 or 13 when she got the computer, is 15 now. No precautiions were taken for this possibility. No other users either.

okay I am thinking that this will be the way to go if the above instructions were tried and didn't work. it is not terribly difficult but it takes time and attention to detail. this link is to a free program to use and instructions with link to pictures tutorials. It is creating an iso cd which will be inserted into the old laptop drawer then boot up the computer with it in the drive the laptop will then be running from the Linux based cd and the tool will be activated. read everything thoroughly before starting.

I'm encountering problems. I'm assuming that I'm supposed to download the program on my computer, burn the CD then insert the CD into the laptop that I'm trying to unlock. I downloaded the PC Login program but got no prompt to burn a CD. I rechecked the instructions and noticed that I have to also download an ISO file burning program. I'm reluctant to take a chance on adding another questionable download to my computer. Are there any alternatives?

it must be burned as an iso file, if you have any program that will do that you can use it, but it has to be an iso.

Yes it has to be done on some other computer that can be used then the iso cd inserted into the laptop with it turned off then turn it on and boot it up from the iso cd. Be sure to refer to the tutorial with the pictures the link to that is on the link I provided.

check the burner you have it could well be able to handle burning the iso. One I have used is imgburn

Sorry to have put you thru so much trouble RC. My niece thinks that she might have jotted down the password after all. She's taking her laptop home and is going to look for it. I sure hope she finds it. Teenagers!!!
