What other plumbing fixtures are in the area? Are the traps for those filled with water?

Since you didn't mention using silicone sealant, I am assuming you didn't use it. When installing a replacement flange, there should be silicone placed between the old and new flange. This makes a watertight and air tight seal. The new flange should be flush with the finished floor and secured into the subfloor. The wax ring seals between the flange and toilet. The toilet bolts to the flange and bolt caps are used to finish off the project.

I assume the smell is sewer gas being forced between the old and new flange.

Dan , I did not install a new flange just a repair piece called a spanner flange. Of course it came with no instructions. I placed it on top of the flange on the side I broke and bolted it through the old flange and into the concrete with Tap screws. It is tight, but it does raise the flange slightly on one side. I assumed that the bolt takes care of equalizing the 1/4 inch difference in the flange heights.

To answer the other question: the odor is from the toilet base - all other traps are filled.

I just took the toilet off and re-seated it . I amn having a lot of trouble getting a clean seating of the wax ring because it is difficult lowering the bowl over two bolts and actually seeing that I am directly over the flange. I have to maneuver the bowel some to align the bolts. As I was just tightening the bolts, one slipped out of the flange and came loose and I need to re-do it. I now think I need another wax ring because this one has been placed on twice - very frustrating.

Does odor come from the seal between bowl and wax or between flange and bowl on a tile floor?

First off, you said you installed a tile floor. You have to provide an extender ring to make sure the top of the flange is flush with the floor. Forget the repair piece. Home Depot has the extender ring you need (Plastic). Use 100% silicone to seal the ring to the existing broken flange and secure the new extender ring to the subfloor with stainless steel screws. Now you can use a regular wax ring. When installing the toilet, remove the tank from the bowl to ease installation (lighten the load). Then, just add water..:)

Here I always heard a double wax ring was all that is needed!

My wife brought home an extender that has 3 parts to it - two gaskets and a center piece. It seems that this would raise the toilet 3/4 inches. My tile is just 1/4 thick and on concrete. Is there a thinner extender kit? I do not want my toilet 1/2 inch off the tile

I would not use the kit you mentioned, that replaces the wax ring by sticking to the bottom of the toilet - return it. Remember, you just pulled a wax ring off the bottom of the toilet, how would that ever stick to the bottom? Home Depot has a one piece white plastic (PVC) extender ring, this, stainless steel screws, 100% silicone and a new wax ring is what you need. You can also get plastic shims to level the toilet. Take $10.00 you may even get change.

You convinced me, Dan.
I will remove the spanner flange and I presume I just mount this extender to the old flange. In my case I need Tapcon screws to go through the old flange and into the concrete.

Sounds like I use pure silcone between the two flanges. I'll then have a new flange somewhat higher and I will seal it with a normal size wax ring.

Buy two extra nuts for the hold down bolts. When you place the bolts on the flange, run the two nuts on to hold them from slipping off, then proceed normally with the toilet and remaining nuts on the base.

I guess it's important to get the bolts exactly where they need to be if I am going to use extra nuts to keep them straight.

Regarding the silicone: this Flange extender is a 1/2 inch extender. Where do I put the silicone? it has a 1/4 inch lip around the bottom side of the part, but this lip stops in two places where a U-shaped indentation breaks up this outer lip. There is also an inner lip that is a complete circle. Not sure what the silicone does.

Also I bought 6 tap con screws which should be more than enough to hold this thing secure to the concret and old flange. Thanks for all the advice. I honestly never thought that a extra thick Wax ring would not be enough to close off a simple 1/4 inch raised tile. Anxious to install this tonight and do the smell test.
