What brand is your shower/tub valve and faucet? It looks like Kohler. If it is Kohler, you can replace the handles with new Kohler handles. Once you decide on your lav faucet, you can use the tub spout and/or shower head from that collection - or find a similar design from another manufacturer. If your current tub spout is metal, be careful in selecting a new one because most mid ranged spouts are plastic. I like your faucets for a mid century bath - they are right in line. The knobs are still contemporary - spouts have changed. get back with your valve manufacturer so we can help you.

I've been spending hrs online looking for one I can use to replace the handles in my shower. I've found a few options but need to talk to the guy who last worked on it first. It went from a 2 handle to a 3 handle and I don't know why yet... 2 handles were fine with me. the 3 holes were there tho. I think. I don't know why there is now another knob. And I very plainly told him lever handles... he put in another set of those round clear plastic things. not only gross to look at but to clean and on my poor hands.

Stop by your local Home Depot book section and checkout the Plumbing 1-2-3 book. I think they cost $20, but if you have a photographic memory, It's free. Checkout your piping first see if it is copper, galvanized, pex,... there could be an access panel in the wall behind the shower. While at Home Depot ask the associate to get you all the parts and have him explain how to do the job. Hope that helps, Dan Martyn

Cross posted from plumbing forum. Single-handle Kohler shower/tub faucet in the bathroom in a condo. I was told that "the cold water is overriding the hot water" which causes water temperature fluctuation in the building, i.e. in neighboring units. This was diagnosed by turning on the hot water on full, then turning it off, and immediately turning on the cold water. The cold water was completely cold, which supposedly shouldn't happen. ????? I was told that I need to replace the stem in the faucet. Thing is that less than two months ago, the stem was replaced. I called Kohler, but whomever I talked to didn't know much either and said I needed to replace the "pressure balance unit.". Also talked to the contractor who did the replacement and said this didn't make sense. What's the issue here, and what should I do?
