Do you feel you wear the correct style clothes for your age?

My everyday clothes are jeans and T-shirts. That is what is practical for me. When I get dressed up I try to wear something that fits and looks good on my 50+ YO body. It is getting hard to find clothes made for older women. I really hate the maternity top style that is currently popular. It use to be different styles for different ages, but I don't see that any more. It is one style fits all.

As I matter of fact I do wear jewelry differently at my 2 homes! I can't stand cold metal touching me so I don't wear necklaces in the winter (from Nov to about March) at my regular home. And I wear one particular pair of earring almost all winter because they dangle but not long enough to touch my skin. Some of the longer ones end up touching my neck from my scarves & bulky coat so I avoid those. It's crazy but cold metal just sends a chill right through me and makes me feel colder. Since it's warmer in HHI, I do wear necklaces & earrings and even bracelets. I usually bring a few down with me so that I can have some variety. One necklace at a time, if it's bold than the earrings are smaller. One bracelet at a time and it depends on my sleeve length. In both places, I occasionally wear rings when I remember them. Your comments about gold & blue reminds me that I have an 18k gold ring with a lapis lazuli stone. I should dig that out and start wearing it again.

In a way, yes, in other ways, about the same. Financially, about the same. I have a happy marriage with a great DH and we've had quite a few fun adventures together. My parents had a very happy marriage, albeit with less adventure, just way too short. They never had a mortgage on their home and always bough cars with cash. Dad was what I would call a "gentleman farmer" in the sense that he ran the farm and other ancillary operations from an office and Mom, with a fine college education, was a stay at home Mom until Dad died far too young, at 52, leaving Mom a widow at 44. While Mom would have preferred graduate school, instead she stepped in and ran the farm and excelled. She was the first woman on a number of agriculturally related boards and not just local small time ones either. While she enjoyed the challenge, especially in a male dominated world, and loved our small farming town, I also think she was trapped by the circumstances. Her plan was for my brother to take over the farm completely after 8-10 years at which time she planned on going back to graduate school, but my brother never got around to taking over the operations (I don't know any other way to put it, he's smart and knows the land well and will work hard on something that interests him, but he never developed the stick-to-it day to day work ethic). While this was going on, I went to law school and then got my LLM. Mom ran the farm until her seventies, but by that time we rented out all our land. Unfortunately about 8 years ago the farm started going down hill financially, most income was going to debt service, and at the same time Mom was developing AMD. Our banker and accountant realized that that something needed to be done to save the farm and came to me and suggested that we move to professional management. Mom saw that this was the right move, but my brother was resistant although eventually went along with it without a family fallout. That was a tense time, but he liked the bank management/manager and was not cut out of some control especially with marketing the crops, which is his forte,and now agrees that it was a good decision, actually I think it was a relief. We also sold off about 30% of the land, which was enough to retire all debt and pay the capital gains (basis was from the 1930s, so ridiculously low), with a bit to spare. The farm, though smaller, is doing very well, throwing off nice income to the three of us, while retaining a contingency fund, so all is well, and it's still a nice legacy even after selling a bit of the land, it is now a bit over 5000 acres total, cropland and timber. DH and I are both professionals and have had fairly successful careers. I am a lawyer, a partner in a great law firm, and DH is a dentist, who sold his practice when we recently moved. We are both scaling back. I am staying with my firm, working remotely, with regular trips back to the office for a couple of weeks every few months as the need arises. DH lucked into a two day a week job as an independent contractor with a good dental practice in our new location. We will probably continue to work along these lines for another 2-4 years. We have a wonderful, responsible daughter and son-in-law and a precious grandson. I think we will be better off than Mom in our later years, not so much financially because she is in great shape (she also had some money of her own and was a good investor), but because we planned ahead. She had planned to stay in her large house in the small town for the rest of her life. However that became impossible for her to manage. She moved to independent living in the city where I worked last year and now she moved to Colorado with us, living at a wonderful independent living center less than 5 minutes from us and I can go see her everyday. She seems content and loves having me so nearby, but it is hard to move to a new state and town at 86. We built our retirement house, actually a duplex, at 62 with (for) our DD and SIL, near all essential services and making it easy to maintain. As we age it will be easy for our DD to check on us as necessary, just pop over for five minutes and then go back to her regularly scheduled life. But, for now, DD also has a built in babysitter much of the time. If at anytime as we age we need more help than I am willing to ask from our DD, we can easily hire a caregiver for far less than Mom's place costs on a monthly basis and still stay at home (at least if our health is as good as Mom's is right now).

MN currently has the third highest Covid incidence in the US. According to Osterholm we've plateaued but cases are not dropping yet. His take on it is that we will continue to have waves of surging cases moving throughout the country as we have had in the past - just like the surging waves hit different countries at different times. So when the incidence of cases drops in your area, enjoy the lower risk while you can because it's just a matter of time before it goes up again. No one understands why it happens this way - it doesn't correlate with vaccination rates. What does correlate are hospitalizations and deaths though there are more and more serious breakthrough cases. It's encouraging to hear there are some new antiviral treatments working their way through the approval process. So last night we went to a fund raising dinner with about 400 people - no masks because of course you can't eat and drink with a mask on. I kind of freaked out wading into the sea of people in the reception area but we quickly moved through that and kept our distance until we were seated right next to other people. I guess in 10 days or so I'll know if this was a really dumb thing to do but for now I'm so glad I went and heard three remarkable speakers whose cause has captured my interest unlike any other.

@Nancy in Mich - it's pretty hot here in Israel, and though the city I live in isn't humid (Jerusalem), other cities are pretty humid. I don't leave my washer door open, since our laundry room is so small that we'd have trouble opening up the door to the room if we did that. Sorry about your husband though - not sure I know how to convince him to ignore the tags :). @dadoes - I forgot about our washers heating up the water on their own. I will say that clothing gets a LOT cleaner with a European machine. When we first came here, I was astounded by how white my whites get. When my in-laws come they're always shocked by how clean my father-in-laws dress shirts get. They're all-cotton, fairly expensive shirts, and they come out looking brand-new. I'm not sure why there's a push for washing in cold water either. Our machines are very efficient - electricity costs more here, so they have to be. Honestly I can't even imagine washing towels and sheets in cold water. It feels so unsanitary. Maybe they're pushing it because washing in cold water doesn't get your clothes as clean... which means you have to buy new clothing/bedding earlier than you'd normally need to.

If I'm just going shopping or to the doctor it is jeans and a T-shirt, turtle neck, etc. If I'm going out to dinner it is dress slacks, a shirt of some kind and a blazer.

Is this ok for an 80 y.o. lady??

I've been wearing jeans since I was 16, except back then we didn't wear pants to school, and I think then they might have been men's/boy's jeans. In her many photograph albums, I found a picture of my mom in jeans and that was probably back in the 1920s.

I don't like knits (show the love handles too well!) and tend to wear loose woven material shirts. Khaki and Denim are my friends!

like the other posters what is comfortable and jeans/slacks tee's etc but always neat and groomed. I was in a store the other day and looking at tops and mentioned to another customer that I felt I was in the Maternity dept. She answerd right back and said she did too the styles nowadays are like the maternity tops that were worn 40-50 years ago. can't see why they are attractive to the younger set unless they want to look like they are expecting. JMHO

I have no idea, and I don't give it any thought. I don't wear miniskirts, hotpants, or bikinis, so I assume I'm fine. :-)

It's funny, this should come up today....I just got back from shopping at a store called BonWorth...This store is made for my age, 71, and has the prettiest clothes, mostly pants and tops...I had a hard time deciding....But, I love jeans, t-shirts and sweats around the house but in public, I think I do dress my age....

I'm 59 and last Summer was my last Summer to wear a Bikini. But, I wore it when I was out of state and no one knew me. LOL!

I hate to wear jeans and probably have only worn them maybe once a year. I do have overalls that I like to work in the yard in because I have lots of pockets.

When I go out I dress nice with makeup. Knits, Cotten and Silk, are just about all I wear. I only wear shift style dresses and elastic waist pants. So, I stray from fashion, yet I don't look "out-of-style".

However, I get alot of hand me down fashionable stuff from my Stock Broker Cuz. We trade out stuff, I give her jewelry from my Jewelry Line. We recycle. LOL!

I dress like everyone else around here that are my age - mostly jeans and tops for hanging around the house or shopping and dress pants and top for going out to dinner, work,etc.

The only time I wear a dress and heels anymore is when I go to a wedding, One time not too long ago dresses and heels were the only thing I wore. LOL

Last time I bought new clothes besides underwear I bought higher waisted flared jeans at Christmas and a few new dress tops for work in the fall.

I'm a jeans, t-shirt, and sweatshirt girl too, even now in my mid-50s. I can also do business casual and regular business if I have to and I can dress for important things like weddings and funerals.

I thought it was funny that so many mentioned the 'maternity like' clothes that are popular now. What's funny is that the REAL pregnant people wear skin tight clothing so much. At least that's what I've seen the last several years and in the stores. Funny how things change, isn't it?

I'm with alisande ... at 80 ... no minskirts, hotpants ... and certainly not bikinis!

Mostly ... dress to be comfortable.

Around the house/garden mainly various kinds of pants and shirts, maybe a jacket ... some of which, with rents and patches, are about as old as I, I think. Including a pair of pants that's part of a suit that was tailored in Hong Kong in 1957 ... and the silk insert inside the knees to let them slide easily when one sat down has become rather bedraggled.

Usually shirt and dress pants to go out, often with jacket or sweater (but they block access to shirt pocket), depending on weather.

Because I eat out for my main meal, and lots of times with friends, no jeans and sweats.
Mainly slacks and nice tops with a jacket.

Me, by myself, for winter, jeans and long sleeve knit tops. Summer, capri's sets.

Gosh, Joyful, I'm glad we won't see you parading around in hot pants!!

I dress pretty casually. Today I have on crop pants, a t-shirt, necklace, earrings and comfy shoes.

I haven't put on a skirt in a couple years. Ugly legs, hate pantyhose. I have some really nice skirts though.

At 66 I wear jeans, capris and longer shorts depending on the weather. I mostly wear t-tops in summer and long sleeve tops in winter. The only time I wear dresses is to a funeral or wedding. I have been wearing sweats this past winter because of the cellulitis in both legs and the denium seemed to irritate them. I do have a couple of skirts and skorts I wear too.

I think so. Although I am in my late 70's I dress very casually in jeans and t-shirts.I do dress up if the occasion calls for it. No mini skirts or shorts. I have lots of tank tops in my closet and I only wear them around the house or working in the yard.

Kinda. I have to buy Juniors & draw the line at the low-rise jeans/capris/shorts, but as for the rest of the clothes I often consult 30 yo DD (the "fashionista" on a budget) & ask her "is this OK?" for my almost 60 yo body.

I like what I like. I am of the plus size body type so I wouldn't go out in a bikini or tiny size cut clothing,(with everything hanging out) but I do what is body appropiate for me. I love the artsy type clothing. I hate tailored fitted clothing. ARG..I had to wear that type of clothing growing up...EEK.. I usually sew my own clothing. Some I buy. I love Liz and Me clothing ifn' I buy.

Another jeans girl here. LOL I think in a few years we will be seeing the old ladies in the nursing homes wearing jeans. I refuse to wear sweatshirts with pictures on the front of them anymore, I think they date me.

I think so. I'm usually in knit turtleneck tops and slacks (sweats for home). Same but nicer ones if I'm going out.

In summer I live in tank tops and hospital scrub bottoms--often rolled up a bit when I can. Correct? DK. Comfortable? You bet.

I just bought a dressy simple pants outfit for a May wedding. Styles surprised me. (I seldom shop for clothes.) In addition to things looking like maternity clothes, the Mu-Mu is back! They look like what MIL always wore around the house. The chemise is back too.

If I had the foggiest idea what clothes for my age (64)looked like, I would wear them. I'm not employed anymore so I rarely wear skirts or dresses. I wear jeans in the winter, but try to "dress up" in slacks and a sweater w/jewelry once or twice a week just so I can wear my nice shoes. I love shoes! I guess it's fortunate for me that I wear a narrow size and only 1 store in town carries them. As it is, I have more shoes than places to wear them. I know there comes a time when you're supposed to give up shorts, but I don't think that will be happening here. This is Texas for crying out loud!! I'm not wearing long pants in the summer.

Although I love my jeans and tees, I also like to style it up a bit now and then. I love the cute little tops now that are nice and full at the bottom. I love throwing one of them on with jeans and heading our the door. They look nice and are very comfortable AND....I feel pounds lighter.

I work in a high-tech company where most everyone is in their 20s and 30s. I'm a good 15 years older than anyone in my graphics team, including my manager. Ouch.

As such, I really try not to dress in anything that might draw attention to my age. I try to be current without being trendy. And because I work closely with the officers and upper management of the company I have to look professional at all times. This means sensible tops, jackets, jewelry, slacks and pumps except on Casual Fridays when I wear a nice pair of jeans and a sweater or comfortable top.

T-shirts are not allowed in our group, even though we are considered the "artsy, creative" kind who often throw caution to the wind when it comes to fashion.
