German Shepherd Needs Temporary Home in Georgia

I am looking for someone to temporarily foster my 8 year old female German Shepherd in the Cartersville/Calhoun, Georgia area. I recently moved from a home with a very large fenced in backyard to one with no fence. I did not realize how miserable Dutchess would be without her big yard to run and play in. So I am now looking to move again, but until then I need a place for her to stay that has a fenced yard.

I will be paying all expenses for care and feeding and am willing to pay a fee to someone who has the appropriate accomodations and loves dogs. Dutchess loves to play with other dogs, but she does not like to live with them, so I need someone who does not have other animals actually living on the premises.

I just want to make sure that whoever fosters her knows that she is like a child to me and that this is temporary only. She is easy to fall in love with and I would not want someone to decide they did not want to give her up. If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it. You should look into Doggy Day Care or a pet sitter who will visit your home. A sitter could come twice a day and take her for long walks or a dog park, and then you could walk her again when you get home. I think she'll be much happier continuing to spend her time with you than adjusting to a temporary home.

If you need to leave her somewhere for several days at a time, ask some of the listed sites for referrals.

I can't imagine the transition to and from a foster home would make the dog any less miserable. Set aside an hour a day to go jogging. And time to work on obedience or other mental stimuli.

Carla, my sweet Splash is an Aussie, and I would not own another breed. The key to owning any puppy is investing the time and energy into training them. Any pet is worthless unless you survive the puppy months and train them properly. I agree about Caeser Milan, the Dog Whisperer. Second, Aussies are very devoted herding (working) dogs. To be happy, contented pets they MUST have a job to do. My Splash keeps a vigilant eye on the back yard for critters and comes to get us when she sees one. She is equally capable of cuddling up with us on the couch in the evening while we watch TV. Aussies can be sturborn, willfull, bossy animals. I see that streak in Splash ever so often. The only thing that keeps her in line is the occasional reminder from us AND her extreme desire to make us happy. We only need to express our displeasure and she is right back in line again. I like the suggestion that you check out the Aussie rescue pages. I have looked at these animals many times dreaming that we could afford another pet. Anyone have experience with the German nursery "MyRoses" ?

I agree with Nik's experience very much, and whilst Bierkreek have been helpful and in English, I also don't like their website too much. As for 'My Roses', I am wondering if there is something wrong with me, as when I check on their site, I cannot see any roses listed, just a lot of information in German. To find which roses they have, I had to look on HMF and see they have 500 or so, but I cannot see any of this on their website, which would disappoint me. Maybe I am missing something. I think, over here, we are blessed with so many suppliers, Beales and Austin's have such a large inventory to satisfy most people, so only the collector or the curious would want to bother with ordering roses from the Continent. However, there is one that I have not tried so far, but really want to give them some of my business, because they have an excellent website, everything is clear and precise, their FAQ section tells me all I need to know, payment is simple by Paypal or Card... and their delivery charge is very small and covers the entire order for container roses. They also have a good selection of roses that I cannot get here, from all the major breeders, like Guillot, Kordes, Tantau.. etc.. They are actually a Swiss nursery that sends out from near Bremen in Germany, called Lubera.. they also supply via Amazon. A quote from their FAQ: ''You are a Swiss nursery - where do the English texts come from on your homepage? As mentioned, we write and speak English. But honestly not as good as the texts that are posted on our website. We work with a professional translator who specialises in horticulture and helps us with our English''. OT. DH's office is on the 2nd floor. Our schnauzer goes up there every single day and keeps him company. He is DH's shadow. When DH travels, which he does often, the schnauzer is absolutely heartbroken. He goes upstairs 4-5 times a day, looking for DH, just in case he "overlooked him". I feel so bad for him and constantly tell him "daddy is coming back, don't you worry". Even though we have a very good sitter, I can't even bear to think how much harder it is on him when both of us are away, sigh. i posted this several times but once more won't hurt. The dog whisperer guy on TV says that to treat separation anxiety, you tell your dog you are leaving and the time you will be back. Then, upon returning, you tell him "see? I'm back!" I always say that and I truly feel like my doggies are a little calmer for it. I could be deluding myself, IDK, but I will continue to give them whatever reassurance I can. I love them so.

Georgia Red Clay Soil...What should we do?

we live in Alabama and have the same clay soil. Hate it!!! That's why Bermuda grass is so popular here. It's practically impossible to kill and it takes off in no time. I used to live a little north of Atlanta and the majority of yards (unless very shady) had Bermuda or some similar grass as well. It just does well on this type soil with the least amount of headache. I would love to have a fescue or blue grass yard, but have been told by multiple landscapers that it is constant maintenance to keep it looking good especially in our very hot summers.....takes a lot more water than Bermuda. So even though it's not in your budget, I think it would be best to bite the bullet and do sod....have your soil conditioned first, and go with a warm climate grass. Good luck!

How do you know she's unhappy about the backyard specifically? Many dogs are thrown off when they move to a new environment, so moving again may not be the answer. Her need for exercise is easily met if you're willing to put in the time and energy.

I wonder... is she unhappy about not having a backyard, or are you? It's no longer as easy as opening the back door and letting her run. I dread not having a backyard because it means I'll have to get off the couch and walk my dog more often. But I know it'll be good for both of us.

I doubt if it's the no yard thing as much as it is change period. GSD's don't do that well with change even when it's step up. Fostering with an 8 year old is going to be extremely dramatic for her. Don't do it. Instead pay attention to sounds that are new and very well may be bothering her. An ice maker, a building project with beeping trucks, an airport, etc. Chances are it's the newness of everything not the size of the yard. If you make time for her every day she will get used to the new surroundings and look forward to your new endevors., but you have to make the time.

I really appreciate all of the advice but I have a complicated situation that I can't detail enough to convince you of all of the steps I have taken to find out what is stressing Dutchess. The consensus after much searching and advice from many professionals has been that she needs to run around more and due to health issues of my own, the only way I can provide running to her is with a fenced in yard. I am looking for someone in my area who might temporarily keep her for me and has a fenced yard. Please help if you fit the bill.
