New house, old pipes, discolored water

We just bought a house built in 1971. The house sat vacant for about 6 months before we moved in. Water is supplied by a well - 492' deep. Have had water tested for bacteria and contaminants - tested good. No house filtering or softening. Lots of old mineral buildup around fixtures. Tastes good, but . . .

Everything except the water going through the refrigerator filter has a slight yellowish-brown tinge to it and anywhere it sits, i.e. toilet, dog water bowl, it leaves a brown residue.

My questions: Any idea how to tell if this is a water supply or pipe problem? If it is pipes, is there any way to clean these house pipes? Any other ideas short of replacing all the plumbing in the house?

Thanks much!
