I found your layoff sanwdiched in Marilyn Sue's post on daily doings for Tuesday. What a shock for you and the others! How are you coping?

Today I found an egg in that nest! It's 2cm long (20.5 mm). According to http://www.sialis.org/eggsizes.htm it could be a Carolina wren or House sparrow. It's larger than the wren and smaller than the sparrow. While investigating, a carolina wren was screaming at me from a near by bush, and it seemed to be very upset with me for being there. It may be his nest or he could have a nest near by. I installed spooker on bluebird house that on this yard. Just in case if this is house sprarrow nest. Babies pretty big in this box. (I wrote abot 4 babies earlier, but I was wrong about quantity) I can't stay on that yard for long to make sure they accepted it because have small baby with me right now. Do you think this is a good idea or I should take it down? This is the box Janie - birds lay one egg in day, and same, as you wrote it earlier, skip a day in egg laying. She starting incubation only after she will lay her last egg. All this time eggs stay cold - up to 10 days if she skipping days and lay 5 egg. I surprised that this is new for you.

Khandi, I agree with you. I told her to look for a roommate (or two). She has two extra small bedrooms but only one bath in the house. But if she took a few hundred of her severance and recruited my husband, her nephew (my son) and a few friends, we sould put a simple bathrrom in her basement for pretty cheap. I know there are ways to make it during times like these. Because I had to make it through tough times. I remember taking a calculator to the grocery store in the 80's (when I had two roommates, by the way...) because I had $30 to spend on groceries! Ya know what? I made some really decent meals for me and my kids on that $30 food budget! She hasn't had that kind of challenge until now. And she obviously is not as resourceful or motivated as she could be. Someone told her that foreclosure was the easy way out and it appears that she agrees. Personally I would be too proud to ever take that way out. I'd go down with one helluva fight. I agree woth you, too Duane, there are jobs out there. One just has to be determined that this thing isn't going to beat them and take what they must until things turn around. Like so many of you have said earlier in this thread, swallow your pride, take any job you can get, it is a quick fix until something better comes along. Geez, I hope she doesn't do the wrong thing..... Linda

Yeah yeah YEAH! Another week in heaven! Grillin' stuffs, sitting on my duff, drinking a couple sips, scratching dog ears, and petting cats. I expected this week off but it was not offical until a few minutes ago. So far it is mostly good. Not doing so good on my chores... the truck is still dirty. Down to my last two gallons of apple/blueberry wine. Homemade with no sulfides so it is drinking down fine without the pickled tummy feeling. A trip to the city to visit a friend that was struck blind this year. So glad I had time to go visit. A bit frightening to see FoMoCo report such devestating losses. Part of me wants to laugh because the auto industry worships incompetence and part of me is worried about the loss of such a large customer. I made a couple extra years of wages working overtime building Ford parts so it would be sad if they failed. Just turned down a day shift job leading a new Ford truck product line. It should have been a prize line but current economic conditions just don't look good for it. My garden is not doing so well. Deer raided most of the veggies. A young doe with three fawns hanging out in the front yard. Don't know if she adopted some or actually had triplets... twins are common. Cross your fingers Jessy and we might have some tenderloin for you this year. It was so dry last month. I watered but it is not the same as a good rain storm like we had this last week. What is left is growing strong... lots of cayenne, habenera, and serreno peppers. Some yellow tomatoes and the Romas are growing strong. Biggest plant and most interesting is a volunteer squash plant. Looks like acorn squash but I'm not certain yet. It seems to have sprouted on its own but may be a prank from the teenage girls next door. Last year they went around my fields planting sunflowers... their mom narked them out. Real joke is I'd probably pay them to go out and plant birdfood. I don't get the humor but I'm very pleased anyway. Off to make some kombucha tea. Never tried it before so it will be a new toy. : ) lyra

To me, this sounds like you guys are just looking for some security and certainty. It is a very unsettling feeling to not have a clear picture of how your life is unfolding - especially if you thought you had it all planned. :) So, my advice would be to put a plan back in place based on your current circumstances. eg both of you are independent contractors and need to structure your financial plans accordingly. When your husband does land a permanent job, then it will just be gravy - not a necessity. So, if your biggest concern is benefits, make a plan for how you will address that after cobra. Have you been looking at your options? Remember, when you are 50+, you really aren't looking at a long window until you move onto medicare. If you can have a higher deductible plan for 10 years, that isn't the end of the world. Just find out how much it is going to cost (probably not more then cobra monthly) and then start saving up deductible money. If you had an account with 10 years of deductible money set aside and a good idea of premium costs, I bet you'd feel a lot more secure about healthcare. Honestly, you guys are still on a pretty good trajectory. In 12 years, you'll have no mortgage payments, no debt and nearing or at eligibility for all the social programs (if you need them.) It isn't like you are "starting over" from scratch. You just need a plan for the gap that keeps you on this general path.

Actually, I am doing fine. We knew this was coming to our area but I thought I might be safe and not that many would go. Silly me. All but 2 in our area of 10 are out, and the remaining 2 feel they are there to clean up and then they will be gone also. Not sure how they will do, they never were trained on my job.

I have 2 weeks pay for each of my 16 years, and they dropped the age for enrolment in the retiree medical plan so I qualify. I have to confirm but they told me it is basically the same plan I currently have, just a slightly higher cost. I can also apply for other positions within the company.

I am planning to take some time for me, get some things done around the house and garden my heart out this summer if I can.

My house is paid for as is the car, so I will be fine.

Well you are doing fine. That sounds like a good plan peppi. I feel much better about you. How long are you gonna take your "you time"?

Oh Peppi, that's too bad. The same thing happened to me three years ago. I knew something was in the air at work but I did not know when the bombs would be dropped, or on whom. I went to work in the morning as usual and by the end of the day I was cleaning out my office. It was horrible because they did things like have an HR person watch as I packed up (guess they thought I would steal some paperclips) and took my laptop. I felt like a common thief that had been caught, although they insisted it was because the position was being eliminated and not "for cause".

The position was never filled again and others were let go at the same time for budgetary reasons. Nevertheless, I had worked so hard for them for nine years, they could have at least been respectful about it. It was a horrifying experience and I even had nightmares about it for awhile.

Thank heavens I had no debt either -- house paid off,too. I did get a good severance package -- pay for unused vacation, three months salary and health insurance for a long time.

Because of my age, I just decided to retire. Now I am kind of sorry I did not find at least a part time job right away. The longer you stay away from work, the harder it is to go back. I miss the structure that work gives to your day and also the camaraderie with my co-workers, although I hated my boss.

Good luck to you. Do enjoy your freedom, but think seriously about getting another job soon, if that is what you want.
