Greetings all, The subject line of this thread led me to do some thinking ... before I shared in the exercise as offered. My hero(es): 1. Yeshua of Nazareth - lived a couple of thousand years ago ... but lives still in the hearts of many. 2. My Dad. 3. My brother. 4. Rev. T.C. (Tommy) Douglas. A charismatic man who was mainline Baptist minister in a small city in Saskatchewan during the Dirty Thirties, when there was almost no rain, the wind blew the dirt around and times were really tough. He ran for leadership of a party that had a deep concern for the people ... and their democratic socialist party won the election in Saskatchewan in 1944, two years before farmer Dad moved there. He was committed to universal healthcare and moved to bring it to Saskatchewan about 1950 ... and, despite a large campaign against it, led by many in the medical establishment, including many from the U.S., the people voted in favour of it. He is generally regarded as the father of medicare in Canada. He later was elected to the Parliament of Canada, and was highly respected as an absolutely honest man, even by folks who disagreed with his views. A couple of years ago our national TV and radio system ran a survey to decide who was the greatest Canadian ... ... and Rev. T.C. (Tommy) Douglas was the one chosen! He was rather small of body ... but had a great spirit. 5. My Mom. Though she was in my life only until I was about six, and for a short while later, she spent the latter years of her life labelled as schizophrenic in a psychiatric hospital and died when I was 13. But those who knew her said that she was a lovely lady ... and much of the foundation of who we become in later life is set in place by the time we are six. After you've used the paper towel on the handle to open the door of the public washroom and find no garbage container nearby into which to dispose of it, yeonassky, you say that you carry a plastic bag to put the towel into till you find a garbage container. If it's a usual kind that you've washed after having used for another purpose, then you're not using one more new piece of plastic to turn into junk. But if you use a new one, if you get milk in bags, would you consider washing an empty one into which to put the possibly contaminated paper towel, in order to avoid turning one more piece of fresh plastic into junk after just one use? At age beyond 80, I have no grandkids to help clean up the mess that we 7 billion inhabitants, which about 400 years ago were only about 1 billion, are making of the world. And plastic has been around for, what, about 60 years, more or less? ole joyful
