Way bigger than the Target security breach

Why no notification of this breach, that I found just randomly searching the web? 200 million social security cards? Experian? A company that is supposed to monitor your credit score?

Yikes! Reuters has it, so it should be common knowledge pretty soon. I can't imagine the implications of this, although I guess it's not surprising. The Target event seemed like a warning bell.

I got a notice from a past employer years ago they'd had an offsite tape with everyones social's on it stolen.

I contacted all 3 credit agencies and froze my credit. No one can open any "new" accounts or take out loans in my name or DH's name.......even me. I like that!

My Discover credit card has been closed and reissued twice now due to credit card fraud(small amounts under $5 were noticed by Discover Card company being charged on my account)....oh well....it's the times we live in.

Nice setup, that's high enough to last for the season. Also be careful not to squeeze all of those branches inside, you want some airflow, and leaves stacked over each other take a much longer time to dry. You *can* eventually go in there and pinch off a couple of the less productive looking suckers. Or let some of the branches "escape" then tie them to the assembly with some twine for support as they grow. Nice lush green looking plants, but I'm not seeing any flowers or maters near the bottom/middle, they seem to start near the middle/top. I wonder if that's from excess nitrogen or just plant type and or climate conditions. dixiedoodle: Thanks for joining in. You understand the situation. Yes, the land is worth enough to serve as the entire downpayment if we want it to. But we do want to eventually put the entire 250K into to it to reduce our mortgage. I think I'll have to get the bank's draw schedule and actually sit down and calculate how we'll come out under the bigger vs. smaller loan amounts, how much interest our savings will earn, etc., all along the way. I understand what you said about the net cost (interest payments less our savings earnings) being bigger all along on the larger loan. I'll have to calculate how much it'll cost us to do it that way. I think as I read through all your posts, and consider it more carefully, I see that the main thing we would accomplish by getting a larger loan would be to preserve our cash for overages--at least for a longer time into the build. So my thinking needs to shift to: is that worth doing? I do get pretty uneasy about overages and there is not another source of cash readily available outside of the $250K. How does it work with overages? Our builder contract is for a fixed price. We're to have continual internet access to our line item budget, so we can see where we're overspent and underspent. And we can shift things around from one line item to another. But early in the build we can't have much influence over that: a foundation isn't something we can select a less expensive one of. So, if at one of the builder's draw request times we're net "over" on the build do we pony up the cash to the builder then and there??

Are you safer now than you were in 2000? Think again. And the NEXT guys are the "marxists" and crooks who will create big government and mishandle our tax dollars? What planet are you on? I'm just glad BUSHCO didn't get their hands on privatizing my Social Security. At least the money I'm losing in my 403b isn't my social security for the future, just my own damn money. Perhap I'll have something to live on in my old age, thanks to FDR. I hope that Obama can provide us with the "Next Deal" to get us out of the Great Depression II that Bush has pushed us into. World War I was just known as the "Great War" until World War II came along. Now we'll have the "Depression I" and the "Depression II" to tell our grandkids about.

My Paypal breach experience: In early August I got both an email and phone call notice a of security breach on my credit card (so they cancelled the card & issued me a new number). Shortly thereafter I got an email notice of a security breach on my Paypal account and asking me to change my password, which I did. I had my Paypal account set up up to be auto-paid by my credit card. Then I got another notice of a security breach on my Paypal account so I just called in and closed the Paypal account. Then I got notice in the mail that ICG America had attackers who had accessed their payment processing system from January 2 to August 2, 2013. ICG America learned of the breach on August 8, 2013. That was the notice that started to put everything together for me. In mid July I had ordered my dad an Amazing Club 6 month gift package. Amazing Club is part of the ICG America family. I don't know how hackers operate, but they know how to make life miserable for many. So, you may want to think of all the places you have used your Paypal account recently or see if something has had a security breach. I don't want to bad mouth Amazing Club. My 82 year old Dad (and my Mom) loved the gift packages that arrived each month. Hackers are the bad guys. Hackers just have a way of infiltrating our lives in ways we'll never know. I'm trying to be more careful with my online browsing & shopping, but it will be an ongoing battle. It made me much more aware and careful with my online shopping habits, password strength, changing passwords, etc.

With this new home loan process, we added credit insurance on our home owners policy. Seemed like it was worth $25 a year for us to have peace of mind. It covers $25,000 and help with restoration.

How ironic is it that Target offered one year free credit monitoring from Experian? I think I'm going to start hiding money in my mattress.

this is so weird....I was just on Experian about 20 minutes ago, checking my credit report. I went to print the report to talk to my ex about a few things I think i may still be attached to....and POOF my computer went blue, then into re-boot mode.

Everything seems fine on my computer now, but then I come here and read this.

How ironic!

I got the free offer from Target, but I decided it would be just one more place that I would have my info stored where someone could steal it, so I did not sign up for it.

Well, I took the free offer from Target for the Experian credit monitoring since we had been paying Discover for this service. Wouldn't you just know. Sounds kind of fishy though don't you think?
