Island - corner/base finishing question.

For some reason I've been putting off finishing my island. My Dad has some free time to remake (yep remake) my corners and I need to make sure I get it right this time.

I screwed them up by staining without testing. It looked horrible orange. Wouldn't sand off.

The base will be painted black. Dad made ....forget what he calls them.. plinth blocks? to use on the corners where the base buts into. See photos. They would get painted black. He made them..something about different widths of the wood. Smooth transition or something.

I don't know. I don't believe I've even seen an island finished like this and I've discovered sometimes my Dad and I don't have the same vision for what looks right on a completed project. I need some feedback.

The corners would be more rounded. (They're very square at the moment!) And as you can see the color of them looks like poo against the island.

1. What do you think of the width of the corners? I think they could be slightly wider. These are 1 1/4" width on each side. They were originally 1 1/2" and I thought they looked too beefy but this was before they were cut so I could see them flat against the island.

2. Will the plinth block things look ok? I can't run the base the whole way around and have the corner sit on top. It would stick out too far. Reason for the plinth thing I suppose.

It would help if I had the plinth block painted to see.

3. Then I've seen examples like this..........however, I was hoping to use the left over base moulding I already have that matches the rest in my house.

I guess honestly ......... I'm mainly looking for feedback on the corner pieces and I'd like to know if you think the transition is going to look odd once done.

There's these skinny pieces of moulding people add but that's going to be one more piece of wood to try and match, not to mention I think the top of the base is too skinny to try and sit something on. It would stick out over if that makes sense.

My mind is pretty much set on the black base and I'm not painting the island at this point.

Alisha, I think what your Dad is doing is just fine considering the size of the base trim. Plinth blocks are slightly higher than the base and slightly thicker than any trim above them too. You Dad did good.
Why won't you be painting the whole island now? I would think it would be easier to paint it before you add the trim.

If the dark base is what you have in the rest of the house I'd go with that. The plinth fits nicely and once you paint it to match the base it will look perfect. It looks like you've already stained and finished the "L" shaped corner pieces. Your dad has a good eye and is a skilled woodworker, trust him.

Aliris and Breezy: Yes, I will still have a 30" cab, so there should be about 6" left over. At the moment, I am planning to just leave an empty space between the corner and the MW drawer. I would probably put Saran wrap and such there. In the long run, I may have drawers made. It would likely be two drawers of about 6"x6" external size. (Smaller interior size, of course). Again, Saran wrap or long, skinny utensils are about the only things that make sense. My cabs are from Scherr's, and the way they chose to handle the cab (for the presumed 30" MW drawer) gives me a lot of flexibility. They just made a stout shelf, and provided a nice hardwood frame of the right opening size that screws to the cab and to the MW. Since the 24" MW has the same vertical size, I plan to reuse that frame, but add a vertical stile (or stiles) to the frame to position the MW where I want. In particular, I am now worried about the other side of the MW. The sink base is there, and, of course, it is one of the only lower doors in the kitchen; therefore, it could also bang into the MW! Upshot is, I may position the MW one inch from the sink side and only 5" from the corner. But I get to play with this before having drawers made, so it is all going to be okay! Thanks for the support, and I will definitely show the final product when I am done! :-)

Thank you all. You are saying what I am feeling, but somehow talked myself out of. Missy moo: What does a " scribed" 1x2 mean? I would love to frame out those windows, even though it might overlap a little at the top. All who are suggesting subway tile, are we talking the really cheap white stuff from HD? Shiny? I have bought samples and taken them back twice, not sure if they were appropriate. At least they come with bullnose pieces! I have always liked subway tile, but after seeing all the beautiful handmade tiles people are using here (which are way out of my budget),,,,well the soapstone was a big splurge for me so I can't overspend on the tile too. Thank you all soooo much for your great advice!

My layout is almost identical. My range wall is a few inches longer and the legs of my U are only 92". I wanted the drawer stacks next to the range to be as wide and functional as possible. When I researched storage options, I read where someone "did the math" and found that there is actually more square inches in storage when you close off the corners and use all drawers instead. I like the quick access of pulling open a drawer rather than pulling out and pushing back a contraption or opening a door and spinning a Susan. Not to mention the $$ savings. Your long U would allow you to put another drawer stack to the right of the sink. Then you can eliminate that 9" tray storage. I had a 12" one in my old kitchen and it was too cramped and too low to find what I needed quickly. Trays can go over the fridge or you can design a space in the pantry. My tray storage is in a cabinet over my pull-out pantry. You do not want your trash between the sink and stove, as suggested. One, you won't be able to pull it out while prepping in that corner, and two, while you're at the sink or the stove, someone will want to use the trash, making you step out of the way. My trash cabinet is only 13" and is between the sink and DW. Close to the sink while prepping and accessible to the table clearer without bothering the dish washer (DH!). I'd suggest two other layout changes. Make your pantry 24" if possible and move the fridge down. You'll appreciate a little more counter space in the corner where the microwave is more than you will the shelf space to store a few more cans of tomatoes. Is there a dining room on the other side of the peninsula? If so, I would eliminate seating and do a one-level peninsula. You have no large prep space in your kitchen. I use mine like a mini-island.

I very much appreciate these suggestions. You all are really helping me fine-tune this design. Do my responses below seem like good reasons to stick with my plan above? I would consider moving the DW to the end of the peninsula This would work for an average household, but as a homeschooling mother of six, I make three home-cooked meals a day. The DW is run after every meal, and a lot of it consists of pots and pans that need to be soaked before going in. you could eliminate the door on the small corner cabinet I did play with this idea, but I am concerned about the trays and cutting boards inside getting splattered from food dribbling down from the prep area above or from loading the dishwasher next to it. It is much easier to wipe down a door than to wash all the contents inside. Whatever you choose, you must have a filler on the left side. This is why the 6" cab seems better to me. It will ensure that I have standard filler size and that the counter doesn't have to touch the slider trim. I know you are looking into the blind base for the sink - I would still opt for the 30" sink base and 36" lazy susan - I think that will be a much better storage option. If I want to have my trash in a base, the only place I see room for it is under the sink, and the only way for it to fit there is if I move my large water filtration system into the corner with this blind cabinet. Though blind cabs are typically terrible storage options, used this way, this blind frees up drawer storage elsewhere that might have been eaten up with a trash pull-out. I also get very useful storage with the 18" drawer base to the right of the stove that I wouldn't get if a susan is in the corner. a corner base with adjustable staggered shelving I'd seriously consider it if a 36" one fit in either corner, but the openings on the 33" corner bases are so narrow that they are difficult to get things out and even see what is in there. Ok thanks guys! I needed to hear something.

Justgotabeme - I liked Squirrel's mock up of the green island but so far in life I've been unsuccessful with glaze. I don't want it the same plain green pain that's on my walls. Painting the island black was too heavy and didn't work with my white refrigerator and white didn't look right. I will, at some point, experiment with green paint and glaze.

I know the question of what to do with my island has been beat to death so I was just trying to stay clear of talking paint again.

Ajsmama - He's going to remake the corners because the color looks really horrid IRL.

I'm glad to know I didn't imagine the words plinth block. lol

So you guys think the width of the corners are ok? A little wider? 1 1/2" on each side instead of the 1 1/4" that's showing? I know it's not much different but still...

Maybe you are using too heavy of glaze mixture. I always add a bit of water to mine. It flows into the crevices much better and when you wipe it off after a few minutes it doesn't leave as dark of streaks. Much softer looking. I do hope you give it a try. The green would look so nice in your already pretty kitchen.

Oops forgot to say the size of the plinth block is just fine. Perfect in fact. Please give your Daddy a hug for me. Since I can only remember how great my Daddy's hugs were I like my friends to hug theirs. It makes me happy.
