x post bath forum-slide bar shower advice Photos Wanted

Hi,

I have posted a question over on the bath forum and would love opinions of those here. This place seems to have so many informed people who have very nice showers too!

Short story, we are putting in a slide bar as a second shower head (on opposite wall of regular wall mounted shower head). What is the position of the slide bar in relation to valve, water supply elbow. Plumber says valve always goes in the center. We don't agree but would like to hear what others here know and think about it. Yes, it's our home and we can do what we want but want to make an informed decision. Would love to see photos of your set-up. The more the better.

OK we have grohe hand helds in both kids showers and as a second shower head in the master. The master isn't relevant as the second shower is off set to a great degree to accomodate the door swing etc. However, in the kids bathrooms the shower head, and controls are in the center but the slide bar is off set. Sorry no pictures. If the slide bar is in the middle the head is off set. Think about whre you want the hose to fall as well; you don't want it to get caught on the controls.

well my post went quickly to the third page after the first reply. I'm following up here in hopes that someone could post some Photos. Any hand held shower whether it's on a slide bar or just a bracket. I need some photos to show my GC.

Please? I'm sure that all of your bathrooms are as beautiful as your gorgeous kitchens.

I wasn't sure from your post if you are in a remodel mode or just replacing what is there. If you aren't ripping tile out to replace the valve, I think you just want to change your fixed showerhead to a handheld? If you are retrofitting, and not wanting to spend much money, I did this in the kids' bathroom. I got an all-in-one from Danze (okay, not highly rated here, but it works well so far, was easy to install, and is pretty handy). The only additional piece you would need is replacement trim for your volume control (the water control thing). What I am learning is that not all trim fits all valves -- in fact, they tell me you have to stick with the manufacturer of the valve. So check that and maybe look at what that manufacturer has by way of handheld shower fixtures. I'm just learning about this stuff myself (and will definitely get the thermostatic valve that astridh recommends for our master bath remodel). So, if I'm wrong, someone else can correct me. Geoffrey, Thanks again. The problem is that I can't build the pocket door assembly infront of the 2x4 because that is our hallway. I can only come into the bathroom space for the extra space. I could have an extra wall built for the shower, that bumps into the room at the shower area. I just got off the line with Johnson Hardware people. They stated that they recommend sheathing the pocket area, once constructed, with 3/4" ply. Then on top of that goes the cement board for the tile installation. I asked if the ply should be exterior grade, and the customer service rep. said they didn't think so, or it would have been specified that way by their people. I also indicated in our conversation that I would be using their framing kit that includes the steel clad split studs, and all the hanging hardware. I don't know if that made a difference in the recommendation of the plywood or not. What do you think of that plan? I had hoped to use the hardware from Hafele, but not the framing kit, that is way expensive. But I thought the Hafele might be a good system. I watched an independent Youtube video on Hafele pocket door and it was mentioned sometimes people use the Johnson combined with the floor channel kit from Hafele, to keep the door centered. I was about ready to throw in the towel and do a barn door in the hallway side of the room. I don't know, it might just be a lot easier and I still might do this.

This could be just a matter of not scoring the tape before pulling it, no? When you tape and then paint over the tape, you have created a seal there between the trim and the walls. You can't really just pull the tape without breaking that seal first or you may pull mass amounts of wall paint off in sheets. You can break that seal with a sharp putty knife or razor knife. This paint is not cured...in a month of so it will be stuck a lot better than it is now. I'm not saying there isn't an adhesion issue...there may very well be one, but I am saying that it could also be just a matter of not scoring the tape before pulling it.

I don't know why you would need two hot water heaters for two people in that size house. My house is 4000 sqft and we have one hot water heater and two people. We are never short of hot water unless we run several things at once like the dishwasher and washing machine or shower. MY Oklahoma house had a small short under counter hot water tank in the kitchen in the corner cabinet beside the dishwasher and the main hot water heater for the rest of the house. We did have a plumbing company come give estimates which was thousands of dollars. Then we went to Lowes and talked to their plumbing department and got a better lifetime warranty hot water heater and their plumbing company installed it for about half of the price the other company had quoted. We were extremely pleased with the price and the professionals that they sent out. We did have to have a permit pulled from the city for changing the hot water heater, be sure you check that in your city, and everything passed he said it was a very good job. I had no idea that a permit had to be pulled but the city said any time you touch electrical, plumbing, or gas it must be permitted and inspected for code. And a badly installed hot water heater can be extremely dangerous, it can flood, it can blow up like a bomb and if gas it can kill you with carbon monoxide if not properly vented. Check Lowes.. I wish I had thankless but they are really expensive. They are really a great way to go in an RV, lots of companies using them.

I don't have a slide bar, but I do have a shower with the valve placed on one end. Mine is a bizarre setup because the pipes run along the inside of the shower instead of in the wall. I'm not sure why the PO did it this way, but it actually looks kind of cool in an industrial kind of way. It ends up looking kind of like a slide bar, I suppose. The shower head is on a hose at the other end. I like it because I can easily reach in and turn on the shower before I step in. I don't know if my scenario is close enough to be helpful for you, but I'll try to get some pics if I can get my new camera working.

Bottom line is that the plumber shouldn't dictate where it goes. It's your bathroom and you should get it wherever you want it.

Thanks holligator, for your help and feedback. I'd be interested in any photos that you or anyone would post.

Maybe someone could point me to another web site that might have a photo gallery of showers? I've searched the gallery on the bath forum here on GardenWeb but there isn't much there that I could find.

We have a hand-held, but its bracket is mounted where a fixed showerhead would be. We like it b/c we're both tall and it puts the showerhead a few inches higher than the standard showerhead height.

No pics right now, sorry....but I suspect it's not what you're looking for anyway.

lucypwd, good point about making sure the hose doesn't get caught on the controls. Thank you for posting.

Thanks snowyshasta, I saw your reply on the bath forum post. I love your shower - we would have done something very similar had we the funds and the extra room. Love the rain shower head you have above. And I like that you have the flexibility of having 2 showers spray toward you if you want. Just curious, where is the valve control for the slide bar shower? I don't see it.

Holligator, your set-up sounds unique and cool - would love to see it if you get the chance to post a photo.
