Bosch Dryer LP Conversion (Cross Post in Appliances)

How long should it take? I just had a Bosch dryer converted to LP. I had the LP company do it and they charged me 2 hours labor. The LP plumber (an experienced guy) who delivered my tank said it was easy and that he could do it in less than an hour, but I declined, thinking my plumber would do it. When my plumber said he wouldn't do it, I called the LP company back. They sent a young kid (in his 20's) who took a full 2 hours following the directions step-by-step methodically pulling everything apart. If it shouldn't take two hours, then I want to dispute some of the charge. I shouldn't have to pay for his training.

So, you were offered the job by an LP guy at one hour probably intending a side job under the table. You called your plumber and he declined the job. You called the LP company and they sent their licensed tech and he billed you two hours for a job that took two hours.

That about right?

Pay the LP company. Their tech did the job according to the dryer manufacturer's instructions and did not damage your Bosch dryer. Changing the orifice is simple. It's getting to the orifice and getting back without damaging anything that takes time.

You got what you paid for and besides, do you really want to make an enemy of your LP company?

I don't know about you but I expect to be paid for the work I do.

No, that's not right. The guy who delivered it was going to add it to his work order and bill me through the LP company. "My plumber" was actually my contractors plumber and I was hoping to get him to do everything "inside" my house, since he did all the plumbing. He came onsite a few weeks after LP delivery and did all the connections, RO system, toilet, sink and was going to connect the dryer too. My contractor didn't know that the plumber was going to refuse the conversion. I'm just looking to pay what's fair. Simple as that. Everything has been at $90/hr, regional rates, so if anything is under the table, I'm not the one benefiting from it.

Clarabelled - I don't know why you said you can only find 2 ranges that can be converted to LP. I did a search on the ajmadison website, and sorted for 30" range, slide-in, and then checked the box for "LP conversion". I came up with 15 all-gas ranges, all but 2 of which were in the $2000 price or lower. And there are 10 dual fuel choices, with 3 in your budget. I don't recommend a dual fuel. You get much more bang for the buck with an all-gas range, and you have a $2000 budget. Plus the idea that electric ovens are superior to gas is an old holdover from pre-1990's technology. That idea has been debunked with current all-gas ovens, with their electronic ignitors and better insulation. Also, I agree with previous poster's opinion on OTRs. Ditch the OTR. weedmeister, you have it exactly backwards when you said "propane contains less energy per unit volume than natural gas". You can take comfort in knowing you're far from the first here to make the same mistake, though. Along with the others, I suspect you guess that because most cooktops suffer power loss in conversion to LPG, it just *must* be that the gas has lower energy content. In fact, LPG (mostly C3H8) is about two and a half times more dense than NG (mostly CH4) and has about two and a half times the energy content per unit volume: there's more there to burn. That's why burner orifices get *smaller* in conversion to LPG, you need *less* gas to mix with the air to get about the same BTU's. So why *do* burners lose power when converted to LPG? Not because of lower energy content but because manufacturers who decide they want to get by with just one basic burner design for both gases optimize their designs for the gas the vast majority of us burn: NG. As cpovey points out, it's perfectly possible to design a LPG burner for the same output and some manufacturers do just that. If most of us burned LPG, burner designs would all be optimized for LPG and it would be the NG users that needed to worry about BTU loss in conversion.

"So what do you all think about putting some plywood down under the washer and dryer?" I'd definately give that a try - especially since the appliances are hidden in a closet anyway. I think Miele manuals contain recommendations on the thickness and installation of plywood. Also, you can buy a "Fixing kit" from Bosch (24.90 USD). It basically locks the washer's feet to the floor. Here are the instuctions from page 44 of the Miele W4080 manual: "Installation site For best performance front loading washers should be installed on the ground floor or basement of the building. A concrete or reinforced floor is the most suitable surface for the washer. These floors are less prone to vibration during the spin cycle. If the installation must be on a wooden joist floor: the corner of a room where the stability of the floor is at its greatest is the best place to install the washer. Â the machine must be leveled and securely positioned. Â to avoid vibration while spinning, the machine should not be installed on soft floor coverings. Install the unit on a 1 1/4" (32 mm) thick, 28" x 31" (71x78 cm) wide plywood base. Ideally the base should be large enough to span several joists and should be anchored to the joists and not just the floor boards. If the machine is installed on a raised platform it must be secured with retaining clips available from your dealer or Miele. If installed on a masonry or concrete base, the base should have a Â½" (13 mm) to Â¾" (19 mm) high rim. This must be done to prevent the washer from vibrating off the stand during the spin cycle." I'm buying a Speed Queen washer and dryer this week. Replacing a fabulous 25 year old Whirlpool Gold set that we have repaired ourselves for the past ten years. Sad to see it go, but it's becoming difficult to get replacement parts for it, some are no longer made. Have been very disappointed with our KitchenAid dishwasher so we are looking beyond Whirlpool for the first time ever. We will purchase the most basic Speed Queen pair, because this set is the easiest to fix. This will probably be the last W/D we buy and we will probably pass it down to one of our children. They aren't sexy, but they are built in America and the machinery is all metal. Simple cycles. Endless positive reviews. I'm not expecting my washer and dryer to enhance the decor in my home, just want clean laundry. Our reliable appliance parts store owner told us to avoid everything Samsung and LG, and GE as well because they break down quickly and the computerized components are expensive to replace. We trust his opinion completely, he grew up in this family business and guided us through many repairs to our Whirlpool set. He knows what models need the most significant repairs, even repairmen buy parts through his shop. I am confident that we will get another 25 years from the Speed Queen pair. In the end, the dryer still isn't hooked up. Because that licensed technician didn't have the fittings on his truck to install a 1/2" shut-off. He came up with an elaborate "lego" setup to go from 1/2" up to 3/4" then back down to flex then some more pieces to get to 3/8". I saw that contraption and I said nevermind, I'll have my plumber connect it. If I'm paying the full rate for a plumber, I expect that same quality and experience. I know one thing for sure, the LP company isn't paying him more than $60/hr. Certainly not for a junior.

Surely you don't think that the tecnician doing the work gets all the money you pay for labor.
