behavior changes and weirded out

I posted earlier this week about my Ridgeback going suddenly partically lame. We went to the vet and she determined that it was most likely the knee. Without xrays we don't know for sure. A (12) her age we decided to put off xrays for the moment since it requires sedation. She already has a sensitive system. We have upped the pain meds and added some anti inflammatories (SOD ES, neutroceutical that has worked well for her in the past, not hard on liver), and rest.

She is still having a hard time getting up, but getting around a little better than a few days ago. However, she has been wanting to go outside ALOT (she's an indoor dog) and just sleeps under the bush outside. Now, I realize the ground is cool and that may be what she is after, but it is so not like her to do this. She's been outside for over an hour now, something she NEVER does. When we rescued her at approx 1 year old, we found her outside and she had been on her own for at least a week if not longer. So, she's always loved laying outside, just not like this.

I am kinda freaked about it, but trying to keep a calm energy since I know how they pick up on stuff.

GAH! :(

Has she been tested for Lyme disease? Sudden lameness and fever (perhaps why she is outside, to cool down) are two indicators. One of my dogs had it when she was a pup.

Weed! Thank YOU!! She has never (as long as we have had her) had a tick up until this past week! We missed it because the blood clotted up around the tick and we thought she had run into something outside and gotten a boo boo. The vet pulled it off of her on Tuesday when we took her in. We are in Texas, so maybe it didn't occur to the vet that Sadie might be showing symptoms. I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning to get Sadie back in and tested. THANK YOU! She has always had a sensitive system. She is acting normally right now. She stayed out for another half hour and then came in for dinner. Still eating okay. I was just reading that lymes can act like rheumatoid arthritis, poor thing. I had human parvovirus earlier this year ( still working through my system) and it acts JUST like RA. Very painful and makes you feel horrible. I really hope we can get her back to her old self very soon.

Cory cats rise to the surface to gulp air, then store it. It may be an evolutionary adaptation due to the low levels of oxygen in their native waters, which are warm backwaters of So. Am. rivers. You may have simply missed a signal that you dog needed to go out. Since he hasn't had an accident in many months, I assume you have him on a schedule. Aside from that, think about what may have been different before bed time. Did he play and gulp lots of water? Did he just drink lots of water because he was hot? Did he go out for relief before bed? Dogs this age do gulp lots of water, especially when playing. Try and target what may have caused this to happened. Some dogs this age also can take a step back and have an accident. It could have just been an isolated incident, but there is really no way of knowing. You need to fix the problem and the only way to do it is to take a few steps back in the potty department. I would try supervision for a week or two when not crated, along with regular relief trips outside. Document times dog goes out, what he does and the time. This will help you and your dog figure out what is going on, and it will also help correct things. I would also say that calling your vet to inform him/her is a good idea, and I would also ask for their input. This does not mean that you need to take the dog in, just ask for advice and research what they say. If the accident happens again, voice your concern to the vet again, and bring up your concern about a UTI, although, with male dogs this is not very common. Since the accident on the bed has only happened once, ban the dog from the bed for a few months. He still has some maturing to do. Crating when you cannot supervise is essential to fixing this problem if there is no medical issue. Some here may consider this a marking problem. IÂm of the opinion that itÂs pee in the house any way you look (and smell) it and the issue needs to be fixed. Depending on how bad the problem is, will depend on how far back in the potty department you need to go to correct it. SG

It could be just about anything. I was woken up by voices in the middle of the night, once. It took me forever to figure out where they were coming from, but it turned out to be my computer speakers picking up someone's HAM radio conversation. I had to unplug them to make it stop. I plugged them back in the next morning, and it has never happened again. Oh, just thought of another one! I have a Curious George doll for the Grandbabies. He giggles when you squeeze his feet/hands. He sits in a basket under an end table, nice and quiet until the kids are visiting. I switched the wooden table out to one that is glass, and George started giggling on his own at random times, but I couldn't figure out what was causing it. Turns out the igniters on my gas cooktop were doing it. Apparently he was shielded under the wooden table, but not the glass.

It sounds like the behaviour of a cat or kitten who was removed from its parent too soon. The kneading is how they got the milk from their mother. I adopted a kitten who was removed from its mother way too soon otherwise they were going to put it down. For a long time it attempted to chew on me and knead me Etc. What finally worked in my kitten's case because it was still doing it at the age of one was a rolled-up cheesecloth dipped in chicken broth or yogurt that it could suck a lot. Not sure if that would work for every cat but it did for him. Every time he did this behavior I would allow him to chew on that while I held him gently. It took about six months before he was completely satisfied and his brain I guess started to mature. After that no more kneading and attempted chewing. I think your cat's aggressive behavior is often a cat who didn't get enough milk from its mother and had to be very aggressive with the other kittens. Often kittens growl while they're eating as well. When he does this behavior take him and firmly but not punishingly or painfully pinch his skin between his shoulder blades then with your other hand underneath him for support gently but firmly move him off of you. It is how a mother cat carries her kittens and most cats respond by going limp. He cannot be allowed to do this to you even for a minute. You have to be persistent and you have to be firm. Sometimes a sharp no will suffice as well. It depends on the cat. Good luck!

You're welcome! When my dog had it, she would lay on the wood floor under/behind the couch - not normal for a 4 month old puppy. Her muzzle was swollen and painful, (she screamed when I touched it), so at first it was diagnosed as a possible bee/wasp sting. She was given steroids which helped a little. I had to feed her baby food since she wouldn't open her mouth much and couldn't chew. Then she went suddenly lame - I had to hold her up so she could potty :(

Finally my vet decided to treat her for Lyme (there was no test back then), and it worked. She did have two ticks on her when we got her. One was tiny, and I suspect it was that one who infected her.

I hope Sadie is feeling better soon, whatever it turns out to be.

Oh weed, how awful for both of you. So glad that the treatment worked. Thanks again so much for posting...we went in this morning and got tested and yup, she was positive for Lymes. The vet told me that she thought about that after we left the office Tuesday, but knew she would be checking in with me within a few days and also, lymes is not prevalent in our area, so it wasn't the first thing to come to mind.
On top of everything else, my poor baby decided to go into a full blown ear infection last night at 3am...head shaking and red angry ears. So, antibiotics and ear meds and lots of cookies for Sadie today. Now here's hoping we can get her feeling better soon. I am grateful that she at least has her appetite still and I am glad that we could get her started on treatment for lymes sooner than later.

Sadie looks like a real sweetie, and seems to have the same toy as all of the dogs I've ever owned ;) Glad to hear that it's not something worse - my pup got better quickly with tetracycline and lived to 15. Hope her ears heal quickly too!
