Sweet potato casserole

My mom brought me this recipe for sweet potatoes. It tasted great, BUT it was so soupy. I think there was a lot of instructions left out of this recipe (maybe someone can figure out what was left out):

1 large can yams

3/4 cup sugar

2 eggs (whipped)

1 TBSP vanilla

1 small can evaporated milk (I used 1/2 of a 12 oz can)

1/3 pound soft margarine

TOPPING

1 cup brown sugar

1-1/2 cups chopped pecans

1/3 cup flour

1/3 cup melted butter

Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes.

Questions:

Do you think the topping ingredients should be mixed together FIRST?

What constitutes a "small can" of evap milk?
