What color would you paint this room?

So, this living room is a major work in progress, but we want to start with a good wall color.

The current color is a very light greyish beige that most resembles the wall you see on the right. If you look to the right of the TV (and to the right and just behind the tall plant), you'll see a big splotch of paint on the wall -- that's a test of Powell Buff by BM, which we don't think is all that great (for reasons we can't exactly decide!)

So, we're considering anything from a mustard to a golden color to a subtle golden tan color, but we think the shade needs to have some gold/yellow for sure and some brown in it. Two other notes: The rug is going to be switched out for something lighter (but still brown/beige) in color, and the back wall (behind the TV) actually extends into the great room/kitchen, so whatever color we use here will be used throughout the bulk of the house (kitchen/LR/DR).

Any suggestions?

I think an aubergine as well. You know I love BM Velvet Cloak! But that might just be too dark in there... I'd look at the greens from the BM Affinity deck--Anjou Pear, Agave or Wasabi. I have never found a blue I like on the walls. But that's just me. Although I did try Adagio and I really did love it, but it was wrong where I was trying it. I would consider that color in a room. Okay, I'm so confused now. I'm a realtor and I just saw some houses with gorgeous paint jobs. You would think this would help me but it only confuses me more. Tone on tone striped walls or just tans with reds or all one color. The rest of my house is tan with red accents. Should I really keep the boys room the same? I have been thinking all day about the blues. My thoughts are...I cannot do the dark blue so maybe the light blue from the stripe on the bed? Then the dresser and maybe the headboards painted red? What do ya'll think of this idea? Oh, and on each wall that a bed is on paint a red box and hang the pictures in that area. Or Tan walls all over with red dresser, red curtains and then on one wall a bed is on paint one dark blue box with red matted pictures and the other wall paint a red box with with dark blue matted pictures. This one sounds confused but this is the one that is very clear in my mind. I wish I had photoshop to show everyone but I'm not one of the lucky ones.

Oops, thought I'd replied to you already lascatx... We don't have any furniture in there at the moment. Just a queen bed on a metal frame. :) So it's a rather blank slate. :) The carpet is a medium gray that leans blue at times. I have enough blue in this house, I'm trying to not do blue. Wonder if Revere Pewter would clash with the bedding. Might have to dig that color card out. I think I used up the whole sample when we were deciding on colors for another large area in the house (that I wish I would have chosen RP for, but I was afraid of how dark it was in some areas...).

It's a guest room, right? What type of feeling do you want in the room? Low contrast usually evokes calm while contrast can be more energizing. This article talks about contrast in rooms. It's not about a colour being "wise" necessarily; it's about how you want the room to look and feel. There's more than one way to create a great looking room. Are the furnishings all set up in the space? How does everything look and feel? If you're having difficulty picturing a different colour on the wall, try tapping up a white sheet behind the nightstand to see how a light wall colour would fare. A neutral off-white might offer the most flexibility should you wish to change the bedding later on.

Threedgrad, I'm not sure what you mean -- the paint sampled on the wall (in two places) is Powell Buff by BM. Is that what you mean?

I have never seen a sample of Powell Buff look like what your splotch is showing. Maybe it's the monitor.

If you want to go darker in a gold/brown/tan, you could try Ben Moore Wilmington Tan.

i think a warm caramel color would look nice..you know you can take an example of something you like and have it color matched if you aren't finding the right color on paint chips..even a piece of candy or clothing..tee hee..

there is a wonderful rich red tone in your woods..so consider that when you pick a color, something warm, even a shade of green would work well with the reds (compliments on the color wheel)..green in the room would make the red pop on the wood..which may or may not be something you would want..

another color might be a shade of red or reddish brown, leaning toward a burnt orange? but i like the golden or caramel browns better as a choice myself for the room..

The entire room is filled with compact fluorescent lights, would could be the reason why the colors look off. Please do keep in mind the far (rear) wall is offwhite in color (same as the wall on the right), but it may not look that way in the photo.

So, you guys think SW Mannered Gold, for example, would be too much for this room?

How about BM Saddle Tan? It's a nice caramel color as ronbre suggested...

The ceiling in here is an Eddie Bauer Craftsman Valspar/Lowes color - Cattail. Has more gold, but is still a nice tan.

We have SW Latte, a caramel beige, in our family room which also has several fluorescent lights. It looks very nice, IMO. We also have a red brick fireplace and the Latte and brick make a nice combination.

Our room does not get a lot of natural light and the Latte still is light enough, although it's the 4th color down on the strip.

Other popular shades on the same color strip are Kilim Beige and Nomadic Desert. You might use those colors in other parts of your house to unify all the rooms.

Mannered Gold is definitely more on the gold side whereas Latte, etc. are beige.

We have BM Harvest Time, which is a really nice gold - I copied it from a friend's house.

We've recently painted our dining room, living room and den.. the color in the lr is BM Chestertown Buff (BM historical color collection), and the dining room and den are Behr Winter Wheat.. We're not quite done decorating the living room but I hope these pics help..
