I'll give a little more info since the picture is bad. The wall unit has glass pieces that have colors of the tapestries. The top piece of curtains is brick red ish with tiny coral threads w/ gold,black and teal trim.

I want to ask a question, tho. I am puzzled as to why the major seating piece in the space (the couch) doesn't face the tv or the fireplace? If the room is used often for tv viewing(and I am guessing it is based on the placement of the TV and the size of it), it just doesn't make sense to me that only one seat actually faces it.

I also don't understand the bunching tables sitting in the middle of the room, unrelated to the seating?

For me, I would prefer to have the tv on the left wall, rather than over the fireplace. But perhaps you prefer it there.

Assuming the tv has to stay where it is, I would move the couch to face the tv. I would anchor it with an end table and put it against the left or right side wall, depending on what works best entering into the room. I would put the bunching tables in front of the couch. I would put the yellow chair on one side of the fireplace, perhaps using the ottoman in front of it, and the other small chair on the other side.

On the other hand, if the furniture arrangement is going to stay as it is, I would move the bunching tables in front of the couch parallel to it. Keep the tops of the tables clear except for a simple pair of candlesticks or a small stack of interesting books, and perhaps a pretty plant. The tables appear to be glass, and as such they are designed to be open feeling, not covered with things.

Move the ottoman, which reads like an obstacle, in front of the yellow arm chair.

If that is a table behind the small armchair, I would center that in the window, not stick it behind the chair by the wall as it is.

I would move the floor lamp next to one of the chairs, and mount plug in wall lamps behind the couch. They will add light to the space without needing end tables.

I think you have done a nice job in your room, and it just needs some tweaking to be ready for your sis' visit.

I would put the ottoman in front of your cream chair and place the 2 little tables more in front of your couch...as a coffee table.

HI Les917, about my problem room...where the pale yellow chair ends there is a hall entrance to back bedrooms. Where the sofa ends & just past the brass/wood tray table there is entrance to the garage. The bunching tables are there because a big coffee table didn't work well with where it could be placed and still be useful to seating areas. The tables can now easily be individually pulled next to seating and then arranged back when done. The fireplace is not a fireplace, husband and I made it to store electronics and sit the TV on. The TV is about to bite the dust and new TV will not be as tall (but still wide). We tried your suggested arrangement but husband wants to see the TV when he sits in the open kitchen.

I like the idea of mounted plug-in lamps by sofa and moving the tall lamp. I'm going to move the tables and ottoman, take some more pictures and repost. All rooms in my home are small and tall and a pain!

I think I do like the rearranged suggestions better. Things about the room that I do not like: Hate that corner with the ugly lamp, but what for lighting? (Still getting cream w/black zebra throw for that little chair). I really need a small interesting side table/stool/stand thingy for beside pale yellow chair (but what?) Need lighting for wall sofa is on (but what?). Simple table scape but what? Close to the end but I'm stuck!

I'm gettng a "dated" look...from the curtain valance. I love the curtains and they would look perfect hanging from decorative rods. Very nice pieces you have to work with....

How about a close-up of the decor above your TV? Please....

One more......the red lamp shades....? I think updating the lamp shades might help....

I like the lampshades, but I'll agree with nicole on the valances...they just look heavy to me. And another thing that's probably just personal preference, but if you happen upon a bookcase with sides, you may want to consider swapping it for your current open shelf unit. The many items on the shelves being seen from all angles reads as a little busy to me.

I thought your room looked pretty before you did anything, but after you took Les & Loribee's suggestions on rearranging, it looks so much more functional and welcoming!

Iam still stuck on lighting ideas for sofa area and type and scale for stool/side table next to pale yellow chair. I can't really change the wall unit but I can unclutter.

I like the new arrangement very much. Regarding the table behind the smallest chair by the window....can you put the table in front of the window and the chair sort of like it is now? Also, maybe you don't want to, but I would paint your TV stand a darker color.

GORGEOUS! Your kitchen ROCKS!!! The painting POPs....love it. It's not for lack of skills that your rooms suffering...you can shop! I'm seriously impressed!

The lampshade...I'd start with a low drum shade, maybe white? it would match the couch(monotone is still in, use red for a vase as an accent)....try it see what it looks like....

I really want a small side table/stool for the side of my chair (big enough for a wine glass) but not flimsy so the dogs will knock it over. I think I need something with some shape but not sure if I should bring a bit of dark cherry there or something colorful like an outdoor type ceramic stool that will double as a little table. I would like something interesting.
I'm feeling like I'm getting closer to making the room look finished but still very stuck on lighting near sofa.
Please keep the ideas coming as they are helping a lot!

I think the corner you don't like has a lot of things going on in it that are all of a similar "weight". Leggy chair in front of a table where the mass is at the top, a spindly lamp, and a number of objects on the table.

The individual pieces are fine but they make for a cluttery corner. I would probably remove the lace runner, the photo, and look for a more substantial lamp. I tend to like white (or some light neutral variation of) lampshades if they are translucent. I only like colored shades if they are opaque, and then they don't throw that much light. So the floorlamp shade is ok but the table lamp casts a very pink light. The room seems a bit dark even in daylighting plus lamps, so I would probably go for white (ish) shades.

If you get something like a ceramic garden seat to hold your drink, make sure it is flat on the top. Some are convex to shed water and may make a glass lean slightly or tip if not set down carefully.

Palimpsest, I swear you must be psycho, I mean psychic lol! I just came on to find you and beg for your help. I'm having trouble in keeping a balance on the mixy thing. So, off- white shades it is (except the red-ish one?) Down the road I'm going to do some recessed type lights but for now what should I do near sofa with an off white shade? Would it look stupid to have another standing light? Also, do you think I should paint the fake fireplace/TV stand? Am I getting close to having a finished off room? So many questions but as usual toward the end my creativity gets clogged. Could be because I'm re-caulking the bathroom, mulching, and scraping and painting the house at the same time.

GRRR! I cleaned off the clutter and removed the cloth on that corner table...that table has to go! However, now you have me wondering what to buy because I keep thinking no go on a leggy lamp table next to a leggy chair lol.

I can't really tell what the TV unit looks like. Painting it the wall color may just make the components look blacker if that makes any sense. The eggplant might work to tie it all together as an object. I think the wall object behind the TV may be a bit low, from some angles it appears to be going behind the TV.

Late to the party, but have to say I agree with Les about the couch placement. I am not sure how the couch would block the view from the kitchen since the tv is above the fireplace (seems high enough not to be blocked). I think that would make a huge difference. I also agree that you might want to try getting rid of the valances. Tons of potential there!

Cyn427, the sofa placement is a tough one. At end of sofa & the little round brass tray table is the entrance to the garage. On the other side of room there is an entrance to the hall and bedrooms. The room is narrow and has two different ceiling heights w/one going up twelve feet & one 9' so scale is also difficult.

I love the new arrangement! See how cozy it looks with the otto and chair together???

I think maybe I have the lighting problem figured out. Maybe I'll do two standing lights (one on end of sofa and one near pale yellow chair) that sort of match but not exactly but have the same color of off-white shade. I think maybe two that match might look sort of stagy. In the corner I'll get a colorful table lamp with some girth and another off-white shade. I'll say bye bye to the red shade I think but will see when I get the rest. I can't part with the valance even at the risk of being on-cool. In person they have nice texture with the red-ish fabric and coral threads, the trim is so ugly that I love it, gold and black balls ending with teal and gold.

I'm getting there...
