Can you dry stack a brick bed? How high?

I think it looks OK but you will probably topple over the bricks as you move around, in particular at the high end as you are reaching over to any plants near the corner of the 2 fences. Chance are it will topple over into any plants that are growing inside the bed there since you are moving in that direction. That would be my only concern. Otherwise, about 3 tall isn't overbearing enough to fall on its own. One way to get around it is to build the ground (and additional bricks to support it) in a kind of terrace design. For example, as you have now heard about Bartholomew, his recommendation is for beds that are about 4x4. This is so that you can reach many plants from the outside of the bed. If you split yours into roughly 4 feet (some go 3 or 5, depending on how they want to break up their bed size), then for the higher end, you will have a higher level of soil to use. Then with about a 1-2 feet path where you can access the bed on the right or the left, then start your next bed for another 3-5 feet width, but that one will have a lower level of brick wall and thus, soil depth. Judging by the number of bricks laid out, You could probably get about 2-3 beds plus a path or two in between out of that area, depending on the sizes you wanted.

You should post this on the Laundry Forum, which is dedicated to washers/dryers, etc. I think you've gotten your money's worth, and should replace it with stacked front loaders. They're more efficient, and gentler to your clothes too. Also, if you repair and keep your current washer/dryer, Murphy's Law says it'll break again when you most need it (like holidays), or worse, spring a leak or something like that. Hi wantoretire_did! Thank you so much for the suggestions! I've been meaning to get to HD and my local ACE for a walk-about. I'm going to go when I have a couple of hours and don't have to rush around. Just walk around with my trusty legal pad and take notes. Lighting is a big part of what I want to look at. I really appreciate your suggestion because that didn't even cross my mind! I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of the fixtures in my house are original, and at 37, they need to retire, lol! I just can't see paying some guy from CL for the rest of my life to come replace bulbs and wash the fixtures! I have electric burners, but I can see how that could easily happen with gas. I'm pretty much leaning against the ceiling fans now; cathyyg made very good points, and these seven ft. ceilings feel so low already, even at my height, that I fear the fans would just draw attention to them. We've got a good system with the fans now, and I don't think ceiling fans are as necessary as I thought they were when I first posted this. Yes! Taking lots of pictures! :-) I hope all is well with you and yours!
