Apply Cider Vinegar - Why?
Comments (93)Hey! One thing to remember about ACV and other home remedies is that they have been effective for thousands of years, and in my book that's a lot of empirical evidence, AKA science. Think of "modern drugs," such as the lowly aspirin based on the biochemistry of Willow Bark, in many cases are pharmacological equivalents of these natural medicines. As someone pointed out, modern medicines (and their drug company manufacturers) are motivated by profit. Synthesizing natural components allows these folks to use the empirical history of these common folk medicines to produce safe drugs that they can fancy up with a quasi Latin/Greek/Utopian name and call it a breakthrough: Avandia, Lyrika, etc There's a wonderful book out there titled Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber. He explains the biology of cancer. Simply put, the body becomes "inflamed" (think arthritis, infections, bad colds), weakening the body. In this environment, wild cancer cells which we all have (and more created all the time by environmental carcinogens as "free radicals") settle down in weak parts of the inflamed body. The microtumors then start to grow, especially helped by high blood sugar. Servan-Schreiber explains the profound effect of diet in this process, namely that the Western high fat-high carb/sugar/high salt diet produces many of the preconditions of cancer and that eating foods that have anti-inflammatory and free radical-controlling properties can nip cancers in the bud and even reduce tumors' size. He explains the biochemistry of these factors and HOW they work. My point is that these long-lived "home remedies" can work, including ACV, by balancing the body so that our diseases of excess can be mitigated. Yes, everyone's results may differ. This goes with any allopathic medication as well. For me, ACV has already (positively) affected my blood sugar and energy level. My daughter has been using it and it cleared up her acne. I'm hopeful about the weight loss and other benefits, realizing some of tge benefits may take a while. On another note, the book Sugar Blues documents the transformation of beet/cane sugar from luxury item (1600s through ca. mid-1800s) to increasingly available (industrialization + British imperialism/trade) general food enhancer. In the late 1800s sugar was declared to be a poison, probably because of all those rotten teeth, diabetes, and other side effects. Then - surprise, surprise - the sugar lobby (probably one of the first with all those tropical perqs - cheap labor, rich tropical land, etc.) had thaw law reversed. Soon the Western world was awash in candy, cheap pastries (think: twinkles, those nasty artificial mass produced chocolate chip cookies) and sugar enhanced foods (ketchup, hot dogs, French fries, etc.). So when in doubt grow your own food and make it yourself. Ever tasted a sun-warmed tomato? There is absolutely no resemblance to the hard, flavorless things in the grocery store. I just made a (sooooo simple) batch of pickles, nothing like what Safeway has to offer. The point is if you make it or grow, your food doesn't need all that sugar, salt, and fat to make it taste good. Trust your own taste buds and don't trust those seductive dietary demons. Sent from my iPod...See MoreSS Support Week of 6/15-6/21
Comments (21)HAPPY DAD'S DAY TO ALL THE LURKER DADS!!!! It's pouring rain here---absolutely miserable but the fire danger level was high, so a higher power took over that situation, obviously! Yesterday middle DD and I hauled and DH and youngest DD stacked about 2 cords of wood at the new place. We took some trees out and a guy stripped them, cut them into rounds, and split them. We have 4 1/2 cords to haul and stack, but got a lot done during Baby V's nap. Today, despite the rain, I'm heading over there to try and finish the job. I really felt good getting the exercise, but took 2 Aleve when I got home, just in case! Wodka, I ordered the book. They didn't have it at the library here, but whilst I was at the library, I managed to check out 6 books on spritual and calming home interiors and one on island homes, so I have enough "picture" books to keep me busy until the book you suggested gets here. Milkdud: Here's my cell story. Bought a new phone and asked for a "local" island number. Sprint had to change my number 4 times before they told me they were "out" of island numbers and I finally ended up with a Seattle number! AND they cancelled my rebate for the phone because "I" changed my number so many times! Gadfrey! So, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!! Canasta sounds fun whenever people describe it. I should check it out. Raeanne- I "use" the dogs at the shelter because I don't have time for my own dogs and the dogs there are happy to see me anytime! lol Well, the word must have gotten around this small town that I am trying to move because 2 college kids have called the office, offering to use their own trucks and move me for extra dough! Gotta love the go-getters! NHSuzanne- Bon Voyage!!! Got to the bottom of your foot problem---good one! But I am sorry for the diagnosis if there is no relief in sight. I know that the worst pains in my mind are headaches, back aches, and foot aches. I hope that, at least, there is a pain relief med out there that you can use to relieve some of that discomfort. Have fun on your ride, sistah! WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT UPON YOUR RETURN. Going off coffee for your feet, though, milkdud? I don't know if I could handle THAT!!! We're doing lunch out for Daddy's Day. The kids all made cards for him (even Baby V.) DH is at work today, so we're gonna pick him up and take him to a crowded restaurant! Warm fuzzies to all! Love you all for checking in!!!!!! Reading what everyone's doing makes my day WAY more interesting!...See MoreHow long can a dog be on prednisone?
Comments (27)I also have a 9 year old shihtzu and last weekend she had on sudden paralysis and she couldn't stand up and it took me a few hours to get a hold of a vet , I took her in last Saturday night and the vet said she has something wrong with her spine without doing any exrays , she just concluded that it was spinal and gave her a pain shot and ASPIRIN and another shot for nauseous, well on Sunday she wasn't any better and it appeared to me she was taking a seizure so I called the vet back and was instructed to bring her back in , they gave a shot Of neurontin in pill form and put her on prednisone 5 mg the neurontin is to be given ever 8 hours and the prednisone once a day , I gave her the neurontin for a few days till I seen she's sleeping to much to really be eating anything so I stopped the neurontin and continued giving her the prednisone which through prayers she's doing ok with and of the mornings she still shakes some and she still has a low energy drive , I'm totally suspecting this could be IVVD since that runs in shihtzus and the surgery to fix it is between 3000 and 5000 which isnt affordable , I'm suppose to reduce the prednisone tomorrow at half the dose which I'm totally leery about doing, I just wished they were certain about her spine since to exrays were taken i have been totally devastated over her since last week , she does seem to walk without limping now and she eats good and drinks good , I'm just worried about the prednisone issue 🙏😢💗...See MoreOur 'new' kitchen!
Comments (61)Yes, Forum Friends, I am, indeed lucky to have the spare room to stash stuff in. I had to light a fire under my in-laws, who were not eager to help decide about their dad's things. I guess I planned all along to use Dad's room as the spare kitchen during construction, but it wasn't until last week that I really got to thinking whether I wanted my kitchen stuff and my food in a room where all kinds of unmentionable fluids and solids were being tossed around a few scant months ago. Once it did occur to me, I really did have to pull up that carpet! Today I got my first of five sets of shots in my knees, so I am a bit sore. Maybe tomorrow I will tackle those staples.... I did get rid of Dad's hospital bed today. I found someone from Freecycle who needed it. One less thing to trip over in the garage. Monday night I went back to the tile store to see what my options are for the island. I really liked a golden travertine. It was honed. If I use that, I might do the peripheral counters in an olive green with gold Nevamar color called "Painted Woodlands." It is a textured pattern where the olive is predominant, but the gold shows through like a rub-through in places. The marble DH chose for the back splash stripe is several shades of green (including olive) and of gold, so the back splash could be tumbled marble in off-white, with a green and gold polished marble stripe, over an olive textured counter with some gold peeping through in a room with a huge island in vibrant gold. We have to live with these samples for a while to see if they will be "the ones." Steph, when we went to the flooring store the first time, we took a few of our favorite counter top samples with us and chose floors to go with three of them. So, I really have those three for back-up if we decide we don't like our new bold choices. If you change your mind as frequently as I have, you have time for a couple dozen combinations before you have to zero in on a winner! BTW, I am still looking for a porcelain tile to use instead of the travertine. I know that having a stone on the island with the cooktop is asking for stains....See Moreakatricia
