Things are not always as they appear. Some things require experimentation and research!

I don't eat fish. No way would I eat sushi. I'd eat this, though! It's made from twinkies and fruit roll ups and gummy worms. (Sugar rush!)

Mock-a-Ritas use vodka instead of tequila, and they're darn good! By the 5th pitcher, we were getting the mix just right. We think. We don't really remember.... lol

Does Jen look happy or WHAT?

Arlosmom - I hope it is not tacky to ask, but do you remember how much your liner tile cost? I have been thinking about it ever since I saw your pics. I also wonder how a black version would look. I hope it would be gray at the lighter parts and concentrated black in the crevices. I will be meeting with a tile person at a fancy schmancy tile store next week because they are the only ones who carry Mission Tile West near here, and they may carry Pratt & Larsen as well. Luckily, we had decided to splurge on the custom 2" figure 8 liner from them as our big extravagance and then later that day found out our builder is the neighbor of the manager and has done work for her. He called her and she told him he'd get a discount on the tiles, which he is passing on to me. This is a crude attempt to mock up our backsplash. The plan is to put a 1/2" plain black liner on each side of our custom ones (as seen in the mockup), but after seeing your tile, I wonder if yours as the 1/2" ones would be much better. The egg and dart may soften up our geometric edges a little. Or, we could do the style that has the top 2" cap with the egg and dart built in, therefore combining the 2 inch top planned with your liner. That would mean only doing 1 pricier upscale "line" instead of 2 (2 x a lower price may still be a higher total). In any case, the pattern is really cool and I am hoping to work it into my design somehow.

alisande - I live in Kansas and can regularly find tuna for 69-cents a can, even 59-cents on sale, $1.12 for solid white albacore. Yes, there are more expensive brands, but they don't fit my $10/week meat budget. I generally add a meat alternative to get more servings of protein - a high-priced protein mixed with a low-cost protein still equals a protein. You can't "stretch" meat with carbohydrates (noodles/rice) because you get more servings of carbs and less servings of meat; and most people already get too many carbs during the day. We also eat on the lower half of the glycemic index of foods, and watch carb intake. rgreen48 - "easy to eat meatless and eat horrendously" so true - I call them "Twinkie Vegetarians", and another type are "Pasta Vegetarians" who eat little more than frozen meatless pasta meals. These were monikers given by a class I took from a lovely Seventh Day Adventist vegetarian, formerly vegan. She's also the lady who taught to eat gnats when you are out on a bike ride for the B12. My vegetarian experience was eating a Macrobiotic diet. Snidely - I mix tuna and white cannellini beans, or tuna and lentils, as a plant-based protein extender, and chicken with cannellini beans. Cannellini beans also work as a substitute for chicken in some recipes (similar texture to make a meatless recipe). I make lentil/rice mixture as a plant-based substitute for ground beef. We also enjoy lentil tacos. There are all kinds of vegetarian "mock" recipes. I make "mock tuna salad" with chickpeas or chana dal (immature chickpeas which are lower on the glycemic index of foods than chickpeas). Even though it is-what-it-is, chickpea salad ;-), but not a bad plant-based substitute. Before going gluten-free, I made "wheat meat" (aka seitan or gluten) and could make "mock" sausage, cutlets, ground "meat", "meat" balls, Sloppy non-meat Joes...... I always mixed ground wheat meat with all sources of ground meat (sausage or ground beef) as an extender. Living in wheat country, it was inexpensive to convert freshly-milled whole wheat flour into "wheat meat", and I would also use vital wheat gluten - purchased in #10 cans from Honeyville Grain. I have a recipe for "Chicken" Fried Steak that is a meatless recipe made with old-fashioned oats - a recipe from The Prudent Homemaker's blog. Another cheap eat.... Make cheese curds with hot water, powdered milk and white vinegar. Season the curds and make into patties called "Cheeseburger Patties". The recipe for Cheeseburger Patties can be altered with clam base or tuna juice, white bean flour (I mill my own) and some cracker or bread crumbs to make "Mock Fish Fillets". The recipe can also be altered by adding corn flake crumbs, white bean flour, and chicken bouillon and seasonings to make "Mock Breaded Chicken Tenders" I've made a hobby of collecting and trying "mock" recipes and lots of vegetarian/vegan/raw foods recipes. These are also some things I've learned to make with home food storage (which includes large amounts of grains/seeds/beans), and a lot of information and recipes inspired by the LDS Church and many of their published followers, like sisters Rita Bingham and LeArta Moulton, and many others. It's not for everyone, I realize, but it's another reason I try at least 3 new recipe each week, and keep to a $125/month food budget for 2 adults. It also proves you can eat very well without having to spend enormous amounts of money. -Grainlady

These pictures are wonderful. The Japanese aesthetic is so refined and delightful. The views from the hotels are so beautiful. The Hilton Shinjuku is particularly striking to me. And the taxis are adorable. I had to look up Harajuku style- it is such a fun look to play with. Usually I am in the - dressing is not a valid means of self-expression camp- but I would make an exception for this whimsical style.

Ah, gotcha. I misunderstood. I still do like those rooms and would consider them inspirational, at least partly. I am working around a few constraints for the room so maybe that accounts for the differences? - I need to find a chandelier that has a single round canopy, due to the way our ceiling is. In searching for a chandelier, it's been hard to find something that I think works with the room and has a single round canopy. - I really like the paned mirror in the first inspo room, but I'm looking to put one of those in the foyer. - I would like to find an affordable table that looks like the first inspo pic. I'm searching a local store's inventory for the table and chairs to find something we could potentially really get (and afford) instead of incorporating a picture of the *perfect* table that I don't know the make/price of. - I would also like to use parsons chairs for all of the seats, but I already have two and doubt I'd be able to match them easily to another 6. I think a contrasting chair type would be a better fit because of that. In the second insp pic I like how the room is generally neutral but has subtle color to it. I like the lantern light fixtures in that room but realize they won't work for my space. I also like the artwork in the room and I could use something like in my room in place of the circular mirrors. For my room, I knew I wanted to find a rug with a neutral base that had a few bits of accent color. The accent colors in the rug shown in the mock-up might be more vivid than I pictured in my mind, but I think they work. I also like the idea of an oriental rug that's not so traditional. I hope that helps explain?!? Maybe those rooms aren't exact inspirations. I'm still on the lookout for room designs to help guide me. My unusual dining room doesn't make it easy to compare online dining rooms to my own.

ACTUALLY, there's some leftover sushi, we neglected to tell you, Magic- as cute as they are, they taste like a slimy, chewy, fluffy, sticky, blecky mess, but ain't they CUTE?????

We've been having so much fun.... we've eaten, shopped, laughed, shopped, bought fabric, drank, photographed, drank, eaten, and laughed some more... we've even gotten a few hours sleep, we're having so much fun. Girl time is the best time, it's a fact.

I wouldn't haved talked to them either, Lori - excep that I don't have caller ID, so when the phone rang the other day and I answered it and the caller on the other end said, "You don't know me, but my name is Jennifer..." and went on to use the word 'Flamingo' -- well, I was like a cornered animal! Scared to death and no way to escape!
