Painted drains/strainers?

Our new house is an interesting amalgam of high end finishes and some really cheap, shoddy work. With that in mind, here's our latest (& thankfully pretty small) issue. We recently found that the drains & strainers in our copper sinks are not copper. They're painted, and the paint has begun to peel off.

How big a deal is it to replace these drains & strainers? There's a large double farmhouse sink, a veg. sink and a bar sink, all undermounted beneath granite counters. I've priced replacements online, but can anyone give me an idea of a reasonable labor cost? Dh has installed new faucets and shower heads, so would you think this is something he could do if the builder fails to take care of the problem?

Should be an easy DIY job, but for a new house I'd tell the builder to get it done at his expense and then look for other shortcuts that may have been taken elsewhere.

I agree that the builder should do the job. However, it's unlikely that he will, and if he does, it's very likely that he will botch the job (if he does it himself, as he has some other repairs.)

As for other shortcuts, we've found quite a few already. I think that the house is basically sound, but once money became tight he began to cut corners. I don't know if the plumber painted the drains/strainers to enhance his own profit on the job or if this was the builder's idea, but my guess is that the builder did it or ordered it done.

Overthinking again, eh? [laughing] Thanks for the reality check, hollysprings and dseng. Wonder who buys the $90 stainless ones, then. (The chrome ones are REALLY shiny...) Probably I am worrying about everything because our normally-dependable handyman has left all his tools here and disappeared. I am worried about him more than the kitchen at this point.

I have a copper sink that ended up with a stainless flange for the disposal because the solid copper one I ordered (that was ReeeEEEaaaAally expensive) was too soft to hold the disposal, and bent/would have leaked. I intended to put a black one in (powder coated or something durable) but haven't gotten around to it. I think the site you mention may be the only place that does solid copper (probably for a reason!), and I didn't like the faux finish of any of the copper finishes I saw. I don't even notice it anymore, so probably I would have been fine with anything! I wonder if your guy just didn't know the difference? Maybe they were electroplated, although it doesn't seem like that would fail. Hmmmm. Anyway, be aware that the gorgeous solid copper pieces are soft, probably ok for a drain only but not for a GD.

Sink drains and, therefore, strainers are standard sizes. However, note that kitchen sink drains are wider than bathroom drains. So, when you purchase your strainer/drain assembly, be sure you get it for a "kitchen". I purchased Kohler's DuoStrainers for both my kitchen sinks. Yes, they're a bit more expensive than basic ones, but they're heavy duty and the strainers are the best I've ever had! No more struggling to keep a seal, keep it open, etc. I highly recommend them!
