Show me pictures of your Large Family Room
Comments (5)Well to begin with, let me say how much I dislike working with a "decorator from a furniture store". His or her focus will be using items sold by her store, and unless you want it to look like a furniture store display room, you need to branch out. My family room is a big box...it's 24 by 22 with a 1950's "picture window" on one wall, 3 double hung windows on another wall and a 3rd wall covered with built in cabinets with shelves above and 2 smaller windows in the middle of the built in's. The 4th wall is pretty well solid wall but for a doorway into the den. I have chosen to decorate with an eclectic, collected, early farmhouse, for want of a better word, style. What I have learned is that with a room that big you can' just line up furniture along the walls. At one point we divided it into 2 spaces with 2 back to back sofas, then at one point we discarded one sofa in favor of 2 over stuffed chairs and 2 wooden rockers. The space has always been the TV room....and home work and craft table room....so it always has included a good sized table and chairs and a TV and all it's add ons. Because it's also the "rehearsal space" for some sort of production that one or another members of the family have been involved in, it also has a piano. Currently it has a leather sofa, love seat, matching ottoman and a different color leather arm chair and 2 antique wooden rockers, an antique round oak table and 4 signed Hitchock chairs. The piano....an old Baldwin spinnet, an old walnut very primitive dry sink, an oak commode, and the coffee table is an old square oak table cut down to coffee table height. There is a blanket chest behind the love seat which serves to bring it more into the middle of the room and as a place for a few plants and a spot for the dog's perching pillow. The shelves on the one wall house books on plants and gardening, my cook books and various books on other subjects that are of interest. In between the books are my "stuff"...mugs, pitchers, bowls, plates, Indian baskets and pottery, sculptures....things I have collected over the years. I can't imagine putting together a room all at once, for me a space has to evolve. By the way this room contains 7 lamps LOL! One which I am currently trying to replace...it's always something! Comments (45)Joann: Thank you for the design and all of the example pics. You and your DH are really very talented. Did either or you ever do this work professionally or is it a hobby? Thank you for highlighting all of the architectural details. That is exactly what I need to see. DH and I were debating about this glass as the side panels are quite narrow so your pics are very helpful to visualize the whole effect. I should mention here that this is not a fully custom shop. We basically get to pick different door/cabinet styles, wood species/stain/hardware, height/width, drawers and component configuration so I may not be able to order some of the lovely design details you incorporated, though I will bring in the pics and inquire about it on Sat. I did notice the bottom doors on the console are not full overly which it looks like you designed for the sides. I'm going to guess my top option will not be full overlay so we'll see. Also, my hinges are not the euro style on bottom and stick out the sides. Wouldn't they need to match? As the TV is 50" wide, I was thinking of having the center opening be 51". Then in the vertical direction with the TV height at 31" I was thinking we should add a bit of beathing room--say about 3" extra on top so the TV box would then be 51"W x 34"H. I think I'll check the TV specs to see any ventillation requirements, though I know DH wants some holes in the back for cables, etc. I notice hoosiergirl's TV is very tightly set into the built-in. I'll let you know what they come up with when we go in over the weekend....See MoreDownsized in real life. Update on my 1939 living room.
Comments (110)This house was 1700sf, but I want to "age in place" so I added a first-floor master suite, laundry and a new kitchen. The stairs are narrow, without a handrail, so I didn't want to use the upstairs master (it's now my studio)! The person before me lived here 30 years and had one of those lift chairs until she finally had to go into assisted living. The old kitchen didn't have original cabinets and there was only 1.5 feet (really) on two sides of the island, the cabinets were only 1 foot deep and the 1980s fridge couldn't be removed without removing the island (width of the sink and dw only). The rooms are on a 12' wide scale. So, my new master and kitchen are 12'x12'. My previous home that my husband and I built was over 4000 sf on 4.5 acres. I was an avid gardener (and blogger). I don't have the gardening/blogging in me anymore. I have 1/2 acre here....See MoreI'm Crazy - I know! Please help me furnish LR/Den/Kitchen within 3 wks
Comments (78)The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. The principal (or the head of the guidance department) will know who is trustworthy, and they can tell you what is a fair wage too. They can even email you photos of bunting decorations for their proms, etc decor and tell you who the students were who were on those decoration committees that might be interested in looking for work. This would not be the right time for you to fall off a ladder, or strain your back from overwork. This would also be helpful for you for later on too, as you might find the strong young man with his friends to rearrange your furniture (for a higher wage) as you change your mind a few times, to mow your lawn, to shovel your snow, and maybe even do some of the gardening. (Just be sure to check the location of the in ground irrigation, the water lines and all other utilities and clearly mark them before you give anyone a shovel.) The energy of older teens is awesome, and their work ethic and ambition should be encouraged, too....See MoreRelated Professionals
