Part II of Help me dress up this china cabinet (with fabric)

Today I went to Calico Corners and found this fabric for behind the glass in the door. I know most everyone here wanted me to not cover the glass, but I just had to satisfy my curiosty and try the fabric. I also found a decorative piece for the door that was hiding under the drawer liner paper!! This is a VERY rough idea of what the fabric would look like. I have everything taped to the door. I moved some of the things I like from the top shelf to the top of the cabinet, altho I do like the top empty. What do you think of using this fabric? Am I on the right track or should I just leave it as it was?

Just for the heck of it, I'm going to post a picture from my original post and then the picture with the fabric.

Awful! Please remove it...
Well I guess I don't have to look at it....but really it does look strange.
Just glass with that decorative piece will be better.

I like it with the fabric covering the stored items. That piece is very elegant and the things in it are casual and utilitarian. The missing decorative wood piece makes it look "finished" now too.

Although the lacy fabric is appropriate and befitting for the turn of the century piece, I have the feeling that you are looking for something a tad bit more casual like sheer linen.

That is a great piece.

Seriously I think the connection to BTU and ventilation exists, but you have to consider why. I had a friend last week ask me how she could sear a steak on her small burners... I told her to use her cast iron skillet and leave it on the burner until a drop of water bounces around on it. I told her not to crowd the pan, and why the steak would suck the heat out, and why cast iron would hold so much heat. She told me she took my advice and then some. While the steak was cooking on one side, she pre-heated a second cast iron skillet she had and when it was time to flip the steak, she flipped it into the other- by now 'hot' skillet. She said it came out perfect. You can imagine my despair in the old days when even at breakfast the alarm would go on if I cooked bacon and eggs (when I lived in rented apartments), even steam from pasta would set the frigging alarm off. Then I needed more water and a bigger pot to boil the water and at least twice the time, because the pasta would just take the water temp right down.. Now with a bigger BTU burner I don't need as much water because it comes back up to temp so much faster. Speed and control is what larger burners are about. You can certainly turn the burners down when you don't need the extra power. Having decent pans will go a long way, the extra power only adds speed and might change what you like to cook. A lot of people on this forum will tell you how important ventilation is when you buy that deluxe fancy range. The fact is, yes, if you are cooking for a big party and food is flying, grease is frying, steam is rising and ovens are roaring, you will need what ever you can get. I can't tell you how many wonderful get togethers I've been to in apartments and homes with old kitchens and friends gathered, and there is just as much heat,steam and grease with those small ranges crowded over with visitors and loved ones.

I was extremely careful. All clothes were washed and sealed in plastic ziplock xxlarge storage bags. All wool (and I collect cashmere vintage and new) was always kept in special clear plastic drawers from the container store, but to be safe I washed all and sealed in 2 gallon ziplocks for months after. All linens etc.. were washed on super hot water, placed in xlarge ziplocks and only taken out as I used them. My mattress and boxspring were placed in dust mite proof bags upon arrival to the new place. The movers helped me do that. I only took one upholstered chair and that was throughly vacuumed and steamed before being placed in a large black bag and sealed with tape and not opened for a month then re vacuumed. My table was vacuumed carefully. I replace all other furniture. In the end I had placed a cashmere scarf, gloves and hat in one of the plastic drawers without cleaning it first and that was the only place I ever found any damage. I threw out those items as they were damaged way beyond saving and cleaned that one drawer and never had a problem again. I have moved again since then and have never had a problem. I do want to say that I owned very little at that time and was able to move in one trip in a large van. I am not an owner of decor items, though I now have several art pieces. I believe that stuff gives the little buggers places to hide. Also another thing about those little holes in cotton t-shirts, I rarely if ever found them in my shirts 6 years ago, it is only now that I find them. My holes are without a doubt, not carpet beetles. Material quality in the past several years has taken a real nose dive. I currently place all my newer shirts in mesh bags when washing them and that is making a difference. Anything I have bought from the Gap is almost guaranteed to have holes after the first wash, so now I don't buy from the Gap. Good luck with getting rid of those nasty carpet beetles.

Ok, so repainting the room is an option: that's your out! Or should I say "easy" solution? Repaint in a color more in keeping with the gorgeous rug (which is beautiful and valuable on many levels-honeymoon purchase being one of them!). Then your window treatments (panels-maybe) will be a much easier decision. I'm not loving the panel options mentioned above, which I think are nice, but a tad too informal for the direction you have taken with your room. Plus, they are very trendy, which again is not in keeping with your traditional style. You have heirloom quality pieces there! The rug and furniture should stay. Paint is cheap (compared to the investment in good quality furniture and the rug)! That's the way to make a significant impact without breaking the bank. Take a good look at the colors in the rug. On my monitor I see blue as the primary color, but monitors vary. Go to the paint store and bring some sample cards home, narrow it down and then go back and buy some paint samples and splotch away. In any case, have fun with this project!

I like the idea of a sheer linen, or even a rice paper, behind the glass rather than the lace. The cabinet itself is so beautiful, and to me the fabric is both busy and pedestrian/predictable -- it detracts from the look of the piece.

My vote is to remove the fabric and leave as is. If you feel you must do something, how about papering the back shelf with a toile print?

I like the fabric very much.But not for that application. I would leave the cabinet as is, or perhaps try fabric or paper it with old black and white pattern pieces,or quilt patterns.

If you're asking for suggestions? I'd weed out all of the stuff in the china cabinet and paint the back walls in a deep color of choice.(like dark red or deep blue-whatever goes w/the room. Then, first measuring the back walls-cut the lace material into 3 pieces to fit the back walls. Dip them in a tub of liquid starch & place on the walls..your deep color will show thru the lace. I'd find some pretty vases, plates, etc in that back color-to showcase in the cabinet.

My suggestion is similar to sharon_fl's, but whether you decide to use a lace or not, the one you have seems much too heavy and opaque. While I would not use a fabric on the door, if you decide to, please see if you can find a more delicate open lace and place it behind the glass.

Well, I'm not sure which way to go, but I REALLY do appreciate all the responses. It seems like 'the vote' is leaning toward NOT putting fabric behind the glass, which was the majority opinion in the first place!!! Like I said, I just had to satisfy my curiosity. I may play around with putting the fabric I puchased inside the cabinet on the back. As with most any project, there are quite a few options and no ONE right way to do it.

BTW, sharon, I just wanted to clarify that I'm using this cabinet in the office/sewing room to store my sewing supplies.

If your object is to hide the contents within the cabinet from view, have you given any thought to replacing the glass with mirror? I LOVE the detail woodwork you found and that piece would still show with the mirror affect. What do you think?
