Wikipedia - how often do you use it?

This is not off topic for this side of the forum because I am sure most of you have used Wikipedia. It's invaluable for looking up all kinds of things related to food and everything else on the face of the planet. I used it when I bought that Buddha's hand citron fruit a few weeks ago. I had no idea how to use it as an edible food.

Wikipedia is looking for tax-deductible donations to help pay their bills next year so the site can remain "free" for users. Tomorrow is the last day to donate. The banner at the top reads "if everyone that uses Wikipedia would donate $5 the fundraiser would be over.

If you use Wiki to look up information please consider donating $5. Can you imagine life without Wiki when you really need an answer to something?

I would not have posted this thread on this side if I did not think it was important to many of you.

I should have also added that Wikipedia is currently without advertisers. Wikipedia needs the help of the people that use the site to remain ad free. In addition, all of you can contribute information to Wiki about any subject. It's a world wide community encyclopedia or as the founder (Jimmy Wales) puts it - "a pool of human knowledge."

I have attached a link to the main page of Wikipedia to those that may not be familiar with the site. Jimmy Wales gives a good intro to the concept of the site.

I have nothing to gain from this post other than "I can't imagine life without Wikipedia!"

It says they've already raised 15 millions, they are doing great !!

Could the founder turn around and sell it though, I'm just curious about that.

Hi Tony, Thanks for coming in..appreciate this. I was going to spray tomorrow, now won't.. was so afraid the spray would ruin all the leaves, suppose to be three digits monday, not sure if what I have is white flys or garden gnats, never seen white flys. So many of them in the air, all over the leaves, frustrating WAs so afraid they would hurt my babies, these are in the ground, 7 of them doing well. These are the ones that had such problems in the heat, have all came back with gusto. Ok..now Question...I have thick coco hulls on the ground, not around the plants, put the hulls down a couple weeks ago for weed control, its a 10' x 10' area, might this be pulling the flies just heavy the last couple weeks?. so many of them! should I remove the hulls? thanks ..ohh.. did your pacific pearl bloom, did you get a multi-color one? hope. Excellent question. With my old Frigidaire Gallery FL which finally bit the dust two weeks ago, it was very rare I used anything except the "normal" (cotton) cycle; jackets usually were washed on "delicate". The vast majority of my clothes are cotton, anyway... But now that I have a Miele W4842 with beaucoup choices, I strongly suspect I will use them fairly consistently to match the wash loads. I normally cringe at even the thought of allowing the machine to micromanage various wash loads, but the Miele is unquestionably well-programmed as my observations told me. I often think that one's usage of other wash cycles is rather dependent on how well the other cycles match the user's expectations. But that's just my opinion.

"For those of you with significant blowers in your vent (i.e. 600-1200 cfm) -- do you have any kind of makeup air system?" We have 1600 cfm and no make up air. The kitchen is open (no doors) to 4 other rooms on the 1st floor and hallways and stairs to the 3rd floor. This is about 1500 sq ft plus 24 windows and 4 doors. Typically 7 more rooms are don't have their doors closed either. Oh - we have an 1825 house so it really "breathes". We use the vent all the time. In our old kitchen with the recirculating fan it took me awhile to figure out how all this dirt was collecting on the exposed interior brick. Yuck - grease and dirt!

Cross posted from my reply to someone in Bathroom Forum: I really liked using STT's SB sealer (now called Deluxe sealer?). It has minimal. minimal odor, and is super-easy to use. Apply the sealer (I used disposable foam brushes), let it sit (8 hrs-overnight) to absorb (new instructions, as of a few years ago), reapply if your stone warrants it, and buff with a clean dry cloth(s)--old cotton T's, shop towels, etc. Doesn't need to be reapplied for 15 years I believe. I haven't used it on my kitchen counters (but could, I'm pretty sure it is food prep surface-safe)--our fabricators used a sealer/polish that they were importing from Italy at the time.

It's a non-profit organization owned by the Wikimedia Foundation which is also a 501(c)3 charitable organization. That's why it qualifies for a .org extension.

Fifteen million dollars seems like alot - until you consider that 78 million people visit it monthly. I contributed $5 because I want to see it stay ad free.

Several weeks ago, I sent a small contibution because it is something that I use often and enjoy. And, like t_mn, I would like to see it stay around. I hope others will consider making a similar donation. (Also, using PayPal to donate is so darned easy!)

Anyone who uses it already sees the banner at the top that says they want money, so probably anyone who is inclined to donate would do it anyway, kind of like public television.

I used to use it more, but the boss bought me Larousse Gastronomique, a cooking encyclopedia. Can't copy and paste from a book, of course, but Wikipedia isn't necessarily always accurate either (which they freely admit).

Thanks Teresa...I use it all the time (though I cross check info with other sources when I'm researching anything important, as I have found errors.) I guess I've seen the banners asking for donations, but with so many pop-ups, banners and ads on the internet I sort of automatically blur them out. You're right, $5 isn't much for a resource I use as often as I do Wiki.

The banners were there for a while before I actually took the time to read them. I'm like rachelellen - I try to blur out anything I did not go looking for.

But I am glad I noticed them and the donation will go into my tax deductible pile of receipts.

On another note - have any of you actually contributed to the info on Wikipedia. They do rely entirely on "volunteers".

Thanks for the reminder! I waited until today, last minute, I guess, and donated $5 for each of us. I use it all the time for just about everything. When I google anything, I'll check the Wiki article that comes up first.
