Seasoning cast iron

Hi all,

What's your favorite way to season cast iron? I remember reading an unusual way either on here or in the Harvest forum but the thread seems to have dropped off because it didn't turn up in a search. I can't remember what was unusual about it though!

I am about to put some pans in the oven around 450° (hoping to minimize smoke but we'll see...), thin coating of shortening, upside down over foil, etc. Guessing I'll cook them an hour and then leave overnight. I may continue the process another night this week if repeated short seasoning is best.

If anyone wants to make a case for a longer time in the oven tonight, go ahead, because I'll be up late trying to finish making Christmas presents of old home movies compiled into just the scenes with my grandparents. I transferred whole tapes to DVD and DVD files are a nightmare to edit! I think I'll just be making notes on the DVDs I have and tomorrow I'll go back to the VHS tapes to re-record the short clips I want and burn the compilations straight from the DVR.

Thanks for any help!

Melissa
