Friend in Need-Granite Name Help

Having completed my own total Kitchen/Dining Rm renovation a year ago and using GW for a full year prior as a source of excellant information, I'm hoping that you GW'ers can help me to help a friend going thru an emergency kitchen renovation

As fellow renovators who for the most part spend significant time planning for our renovation you can understand what stress is brought on by having to do the same in immediate turn around time. So I am trying to give her advice based on my experiences from here and my own reno.

Saturday we went out to 2 granite yards and at one she fell in love with a stone. For whatever the ridiculous reason was, the woman who we met with didn't know the name of it(that's another story). On the way home she was 99.9% sure this was exactly what she was looking for. On Sunday I tried checking out the company on the web and found only one review(nothing here on GW)and it gave the company 2 out of five stars with a comment that they are quick about installing but to get them to return is another story. Unfortunately she didn't remark as to why they needed to return which is of course a big question and didn't give any specifics other than above. Pretty vague BUT enough to give one pause.

I told her what I had found and now she is not so sure if she should go with this company.

We had been planning to check a couple other places anyways(one that comes highly recommended) but now we have no idea what the stone was. And of course we didn't even think to take a pic :So, here is the description of the stone:

Alot of movement with the predominant color black with white, tan, brown and alot of crystals. It was extremely striking. The woman referred to it as an exotic stone, and of course the price was pretty exotic, too.

I've checked a couple of websites but not seeing anything that resembles it.

I hope someone here might have an idea of what it was. Thanks for any and all input. We are in Northern NJ, if that matters.

Check a stone called Deer Isle Granite. It's quarried right here in Maine, and would match your description exactly.

that could be so many granites. mine has a predominitely white background, with what i thought was black at the granite place, but it is actually dark mahogony brown, tan, and alot of crystals in it too. could you go back and take a photo? what was the name of the company where it was found at? maybe they have a website with it listed.

I have a similar looker in the ground at my house. It is Sugar Daddy. It is on the list of hosta which have edge melt I think it is called. I got it from Naylor Creek in 2012. I loved the name as well as the look. It is a sport of Big Daddy. Look it up in Hosta Library for mature pictures. It is said to develop a "sawtooth" margin as it matures. It has white blooms in June/July. Oct 2013 not bad for this time of year. Here is a picture of mine which is in its 3d season in May 2014 and definitely not mature.

I have noticed that quite a few people are using the same granite on the backsplash as on the countertops, which is a very clean modern look. Not sure if this would appeal to her more than tile though, just something to toss out there, for what its worth. Otherwise, I agree the enhanced Noce subway tile would look best. And is very classic and timeless.

Aww I like Jack! You're right, if he's already responding to it, easier for him to leave it as Jack. We were told our Roxie was Roxanne when they gave her away, so shortened name worked great for her. My crack about his ears was just a joke, he looks like a little doll, bat ears and all. Isn't it sweet the way they often pick a person? Our boy Forrest is all Dad's, he pines for him even if he just goes out to move his truck. Meanwhile, Roxie doesn't bat an eye, until I come home, then it's love time for her. Hope you get to enjoy a lot of happy years with Jack!

It's a primula, perhaps Primula veris , I've not grown this one but believe it will grow in sun as long as it doesn't dry out. Not sure on the shade aspect.

What's the name of the granite yard? All granite and marble?
I'm in NJ too. I would go back and take a picture of the granite than post it here. Someone will know what it is.

Bill-Thanks but that's not it-much more black and veining

Teppy & Positano-going back and taking a pic may be our only choice

Ccombs-Thanks so much for the link; i started with a search on black and found a couple that are close; not too sure if they are right, though but will do more research on those names and see what turns up

Thanks to all of you on your quick response; it is truly appreciated and I know that there are soooo many different stones out there that this is kinda looking for a needle in a haystack

If several people had issues, that is one thing. But I wouldn't be discouraged by a single mediocre review. Doesn't hurt, of course, to do a web search or post it here for ideas. There are way too many patterns to i.d. it from this description. Good luck to your friend!

Update to all that tried to help:
We are checking out another place on Sat and if she doesn't find something that strikes her the way this stone did she will use that company. She is supposed to be getting a pic of the slab from them and e-mail it to me. I will post just for the fun of someone figuring out what it is; it is truly stunning....

Cool- hey, I'd love to know what your friend is planning in her kitchen. Since I'm interested in a similar (if not same) granite... Style and color of cabinets, granite on everything or just island and something else on other counters. Backsplash? Thanks!~ Hope I helped.
