When you purchase a coffee table, you'll become aware of how many choices you have when it comes to material. The most obvious material that comes to mind is wood, but you don't have to restrict yourself to wood if you don't want to.
Take a look at your room and other furniture to determine what material would look best. Clear acrylic and glass can make a small room look more open. The glint of metal can accomplish the same purpose. Glass, acrylic, metal and stone also look good in a modern room.

One idea I saw on Houzz was to use a child's table (round) as a coffee table. I thought that was a neat idea. You could get a wooden one at a good price.

It has a laminate top, so you would not have to worry about chipping, AFAIK.

Another possibility would be to look at MCM coffee tables-- they often have laminate tops as well and I think would look good with your furniture (w/o actually having seen the room).

Going along with anele's idea, have you checked Craigslist? Sadly this one I am linking is in Maine, but what a great idea for both you and your kids! I've never seen one like it, but they must be out there somewhere.

Craigslist has some junk, but it also has wonderful buys. You might find something you like that you could paint.

Are you aware that with reclining couches, your coffee table will have to be quite a distance from your couch? We had those reclining couches and I did not feel a coffee table worked...I .just spent money on the end tables that I liked. That said, if you have a big room then I think a round coffee table....wood...would work.

I am open to Craigslist. I have been checking daily. Love the pull out ottoman coffee table. I have looked at one similar in brown.

Another vote for using kids' tables. I have done this twice! We bought a farmhouse style pine play table from Pottery Barn Kids and just cut off the bottom 2" or so from the legs, so it was normal coffee table height (kiddie tables are usually a little taller than typical coffee tables). We have it at our beach cottage and it has held up to all kinds of abuse.
