Weird shower drain question

I am having a new bathroom installed upstairs. The builder picked up a Lasco prefab acrylic shower pan. The walls will be tile over backer board. The drain is nothing I've ever seen before, and I'm leery. Typically, I am used to a PVC drain that is glued to a PVC drain pipe. This one is a PVC drain that looks like the drain line comes up inside it, and is sealed by use of a round rubber seal that takes up the space between the outside of the drain pipe, and the inside of the drain itself. I'm a bit leery about the possibility of a leak. To make this more confusing, the directions that came w/the pan do not address the drain, and the Lasco web site does not address the drain assembly. Anyone have any experience with this?
