cooking in vintage cast iron...

last night I was making a little something out of some leftover leg of lamb....and pulled an enamel cast iron fry pan, about 9 inches by 2, out of a stack of cast iron enamel fry pans...2 that size, 2 smaller and one larger...

Cooked my lamb....and was washing up and turned that pan over to see what it was. I have had it easily 30 years....maybe longer..

And it's a Griswald, and I think the yellow one just like this and one of the small ones are Griswald too.

did you ever know that Griswald made enameled cast iron??

I sure didn't.

I had no idea. Years ago for a short time I took an interest in learning more about Griswold; my meager "collection" consisted of large logo regular, large logo slant with heat ring, small logo, etc. I had no idea if anything I was buying was worth anything or not, and it turned out that the auction prices were reasonable but the shipping cost made it a waste. Anyway don't recall coming across enameled. If I can find my Griswold book I'll look it up and will let you know what they say. Treat it well!

Yep! Highly respected cast iron!!
Those and Wagner are some of the most lusted after by collectors.

Probably worth a pretty penny, not that you'd want to give them up.

I love my cast iron (I think none of which are Griswold or Wagner).

Yes. The field that activates the ferrous material goes a bit beyond the surface of the cooktop. The distance is very slight and shouldn't make a difference. There is a caveat to using CI on induction. It is terrible at conducting heat and you'll notice hot spots. It's very slow to come up to temp, or changing temp, and doesn't utilize the wonderful responsiveness that induction can offer. You'll want cookware with aluminum or copper cores to reap the best out of your cooktop. Not sure if you wanted to use CI exclusively, but I thought I'd address it for future readers. I'm not anti CI. I have a 10 inch skillet that I like for certain things and for use in the oven, as well as a couple of enameled dutch ovens.

Hi there, What do you mean by "wooden base"? Cabinetry? You can often find the large farmhouse sinks with the metal base cabinets, but I've never seen one with a wooden structure. Or are you thinking of a vanity made from an old dry sink? These can be retrofitted fairly easily.

Lol, chesters_house. If I lived closer to Cols., I'd have scooped it myself and not breathed a word to GW, 'til after the deed was done! The sink is still listed, but I can't imagine that it's still sitting there--they probably just forgot to remove the ad. Or, maybe they're watching from behind the blinds, laughing as hopeful TVKO's* slow down to a crawl, scan the curb, then continue on with crestfallen expressions. ;) Here is a link that might be useful: *Totally vintage kitchen obsessed

Nope, I've never had enameled cast iron, only the plain stuff. I do have one Griswold chicken fryer that I got at a yard sale for a couple of bucks, but the rest of my cast iron is either Lodge or no-name, mostly made in Michigan by the East Jordan Iron Works.

I have Griswold black cast iron skillets that were my Mother's. She cooked with them daily; she was a Navy wife and these skillets traveled the world with her (and me and my family:). I remember having to clean these skillets after dinner as "doing the dishes" was my sister's job and mine - every other night. I now have these skillets and some stainless saucepans that say US Navy on the bottoms. I use the cast iron almost daily - unlike my Mom, I have alot of cookware, but the cast iron is my go to skillet. I estimate it to be 50+ years old.
I had no idea Griswold made enameled cast iron....very interesting.

You're talking Greek to me....the only thing I know about Griswald is that I think it's the best....has the smoothest finish....and I have...or had....2 or 3 pieces from my mother which likely were her mother's. Gave all but one small skillet to my daughter.
Then I discover this Griswald piece.
Just checked the rest of the stack....that's the only Griswald....the other one which looks identical but for an unglazed foot on the bottom, is labeled in blue in the enamel glaze...unreadable. One of the small frypans has no mark....and another frypan that I absolutely know for sure is at least 52 years old is marked "Le Cruset"...
Amazing!!
