Fancy sink with no overflow and thin ceramic---drain won't work?

The sink is a large rectangle with no overflow. The piece that fits into the drain assembly and holds the pop-up part has large holes in it... holes that are half exposed when the part is dropped in.

This obviously won't work. The plumber went to home depot and didn't find anything to cover the holes (I think he was looking for a rubber gasket?)

Cifial hasn't gotten back to me.

Does anyone know what we should do? Before the plumber starts cutting and gluing stuff?
