Overflow hole in vessel sinks

I am considering using a vessel sink in our new downstairs powder room and see some sinks with overflow holes and some, including smaller sinks, without. Seems like a good idea to have an overflow hole, but how critical are they and is there something about a vessel sink that obviates the need for one? For reference, the powder room will be the only bathroom on the first floor and so will be used alot by guests and my young children.

I'm so confused by this and would appreciate advice. Thanks.
