NY Times article on real chef's kitchens
Comments (19)From the article " The term conjures up visions of professionals using acres of counter space and island stoves to perfect their braising and baking - like Julia Child's kitchen memorialized in the Smithsonian." Hellloooooo??? Has this reporter SEEN Julia's kitchen. If I recall correctly as it's been a couple of years since I saw it, she had TWO, that's right - TWO!! small counters and a table in the middle. Heck, I've seen ISLANDS bigger than her kitchen. I love to cook and my kitchen was designed to have everything accessible within 5 small steps. The working floor space is a measly 8 square feet with the counters on the perimeter but it's a gorgeous, functional kitchen and it works. When I learned to cook it was in a kitchen filled with 16 other people and all the space we each had was a 2x3' cart with storage underneath. I cook or rather bake, because I have a passion for it. And what keeps me going, are the compliments. And they don't come from my family so I don't cook/bake for them. They just take it for granted. I think TV and Food Networks sensationalize the life of top Chefs. Out in the real world, it's nothing like that....See MoreA foodie's dream come true -- eating at the kitchen table!

I'll need to wait for another special occasion...My daughter turns 30 next year!! LOL barnmom! Frank was as wonderful on the inside as on the outside! Cathy, Raymond is so funny! I LOL and Charles had to come see what I was laughing about. We both laughed! Peppi, I wish you all could have been there with us. Especially your Mom. Comments (23)Yes, I'd love to see this particular birthday gift. Happy Birthday, John, I like it better than the pulse oximeter, LOL. I don't have a Shun, but I do have a "special occasion" knife. Nancy (wizardnm) and her SO, Kim, gave it to Elery and I as a wedding gift, it's a Wusthof serrated utility knife, I use it for slicing tomatoes and for nothing else, it's perfect. I also have a set of Gerber steak knives, sharp as scalpels, a gift from Peppi that I liked so well I bought a second set. They are no longer made, of course, so I had to search for them, but they're amazing. So, yeah, I get the premise of a "special occasion knife". Comments (9)From what I understand, Viking used to make great appliances a long time ago. Is there a reason you don't want to keep your old refrigerator? The Subzero is beautiful if price is no object and if you are very fastidious, but I would keep the Viking if it is in good condition. Pairing a ductless ventilation unit with a 48" gas range is actually dangerous. There is a reason these vents are pictured with induction cooktops. Why do you need a ductless vent hood? Is it simply aesthetics? If so, I would recommend swapping the range top for a large induction cooktop. Especially if you aren't an experienced cook (the range top-ventilation paring you proposed is a big clue), you'll be happier with the ease of use of an induction cooktop. Plus, they look really sleek if you get them built into the counter if it's a specific look you are coveting....See Moreblfenton
