Satine, it was me that was having unstuffed cabbage. I love stuffed cabbage but have gotten lazy over the years. All I do is use the same ingredients I used for when I was stuffing them. I don't 'steam' my cabbage first.....just chop off the bottom of the head and peel off the leaves. I still remove most of the hard stem of each leaf, like I learned from Julia Child.

I mix up my 'stuffing' ingredients and alternate leaves of cabbage with the mixture. Then pour over whatever 'sauce' I make up. The end result doesn't look as pretty this way, but tastes just as good. If I were having company, I'd roll them.

I've done the same thing, only used shredded or chopped cabbage. Cabbage, rice, hamburger, onions, some mozzarela cheese and spaghetti sauce. All combined and baked in the oven. Same flavour with a lot less work.

We liked stuffed cabbage, too; but the prep is too time consuming for my schedule.

The linked recipe is one that I have used and we liked it. However, if memory serves me, I used a 15 oz can of diced tomatoes instead of the 8 oz called for to suit our taste.

Thanks for the responses. I think I"ll give this a try. On the same subject (easy versions of time consuming recipes) have any of you tried easy perogie? Made with lasagna noodles layered in 10 x 13 pan with mashed potatoes, cheese and sauteed onions. MMMM good and much easier than the original method. Have a great day. Satine

LAZY PIEROGI CASSEROLE

15 lasagne noodles
2 c. cottage cheese
1 egg
1/4 tsp. onion salt
1 c. shredded cheddar cheese
2 c. mashed potatoes
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. onion salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 c. butter
1 c. chopped onions
Sour cream

Cook noodles as directed on package. Drain. Line bottom of 9"x13" pan with noodles. In medium bowl, mix cottage cheese, egg and onion salt together. Spread over noodles. Cover with a layer of noodles. In same bowl, mix cheddar cheese with potatoes, salt, onion salt and pepper. Spread over noodles.

Cover with another layer of noodles. Melt butter in pan. Saute onion until transparent and soft. Pour over noodles. Cover. Bake 30 minutes in 350 degree oven.

Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Serve with sour cream.

NOTE:
the recipe calls for 1/4 tsp. onion salt x2 - I won't be doing that - must be a typo.

I am making this, using ricotta cheese instead of cottage cheese and adding browned ground beef - will be delicious!

here is my aunt's version.

1# ground beef & onion - brown
1 pkg cole slaw
1/2 c. minute rice
1 can tomato soup 9 smooth over
1 can wter
1/4 to 1/2 c catsup on top

bake @ 350�
1 hour

these are the instructions as I was given them. I assume you brown the grnd beef and onion, put in an oven safe dish then add the rest.
I haven't tried it yet, as I make a bunch of cabbage rolls and freeze them in meal size portions. She has made it and didn't bake it as long. She thought it should have been baked as directed, but was good.
