Neener neener...I got a surcie today!! And it was a day when I really needed a surprise or a hug...or a friend to invite me out for a drinking lunch....but I couldn't leave because the gas people were tearing up my yard ( not my idea!!) installing a new gas line! And I had to stay so they could get in to relight my pilots....And I had no heat from 9AM on...nor hot water nor stove nor dryer...and I am still dealing with ice and snow....big time!!

Anyhow, the mail man left a package on my front step....I knew I hadn't ordered anything that big from eBay....what was it? Who did I know in New Hampshire?? I have a cousin...actually 2 cousins one from my father's side and one from my mother's side....Oh yes and an aunt....but they had never sent me anything....

But the handwriting was vaguely familiar.....?????

So I opened it....and found a box of Christmas crackers....my grands will love that....wearing silly hats just goes with a spoon on the nose!

And a couple of mysterious little glass things??? Still can't figure them out...

And then....be still my heart! A cranberry overlay little vase....tussy mussy size...it must have been crying to come to my house!!! As you can see by the pictures...it fits right in!!...also it's clean and shows how dirty the rest of my stuff is....

and....then....2 jars of currant jelly....black and red!!

I would make my own if I could buy currants...I tried growing them but the birds ate them well bfore they ripened. She didn't include the recipe!!

Oh darn...I always have the worst problems with Kodak Gallery. Clicking on Linda's link all I get is "album not found".

Well, Glad Paulines made it! My dinner party went GREAT!!! So great in fact, that today DH and I have reversed roles. He was nagging me about making a list of all the kitchen things that still have to be done, and email them to our kitchen guy. (For those that may not have followed all my posts, I am doing the GC of a total house reno, and our kitchen has been one fiasco after another, dealing with a supply company, and DIY most of the work.) HA, usually it is me frustrated with delays and chomping at the bit, and my hubby is "Alan is doing his best, don't bug him...". Today I am so mellow, even DH harping can't get me down! And that was entertaining in a LR with plywood floors, no granite on the pony wall, and drywall sheets leaning against the fireplace 'hole'. But to me, with ALL the walls painted, (we were still applying the final coat late Sat afternoon!), and all the mess cleaned up, furniture polished and drywall dust vanquished, I felt like I was in Shangrila! But kitchen (even though not 100% done), was the shining star, and it was so much FUN!!! I am so excited about this new phase of our lives, sharing meals with friends and family is going to be so much better! (And our house has always been the 'place' to host parties, but usually in summer, cuz I have a pretty fabulous garden and a huge deck) Sorry for the gushing- but it's such a neat feeling to have all the planning and work come to fruition. Feel kinda bad that it was still a shambles when kids were home for Christmas.

OK I have to jump in here. I am a working mother with 2 kids age 4 and 10 like you spitfire. I work full time, commuting into NYC in a high demand job that requires me to travel. My husband also works full time. I am a harried mother with very little time to do anything. My kids are a disaster BUT I'll be darned if I let then run around destroying things that aren't theirs (like an item in a store) or playing/eating things that aren't paid for. I don't think that being a busy mom excuses anyone from having their kids be so out of control that they are downright disruptive and destructive. I don't post often on these boards, not because I feel left out, but because sometimes what I have to say is not as interesting as what others are saying. I've found the couple of times that I have posted, people are very friendly and accepting. A majority of posters have kids and many of them do work outside the home. Just because they make time to do things they like/enjoy does not necessarily mean that they have grown/no children or that they stay home. Reading your post got to me because you are not the only busy working mom out there. So when people hide behind that to make excuses for bad behavior or for feeling left out, I think that's the fault of the individual. Goldust posted an observation that annoyed her to the friends on this board, I don't think it was fair of you to accuse people of trying to turn this into a "slam" on women with young children. That was not the point of her post. I'm off on the one vacation I get a year so I won't see your response. Trust me when I say that I feel your pain but I just don't think your rant was fair.

Thank you Annie and Dave for the words of encouragement. After doing some serious thinking about it, I wonder if having too much water in the canner caused the problem. I had the empty pints jars in the pressure canner covered with water like I do with BWB to be extra careful on keeping them sterile. When I took the jars out, filled them with soup then returned them to the canner, I didn't remove any of the water so instead of a couple of inches of water, I had it going well over the tops of the filled jars. I think I'll just take a break and stick with BWB recipes for a while like you suggested, Dave. Annie, there was some diced onion and celery along with the chicken along with the stock. I made sure that there was only half veggies and chicken and half broth in each jar. It was the Ball Blue Book recipe. DH was in stage 4 cancer so they removed his right ear and the ear canal. That's when they found microscopic cancer tumors on the lining of his brain. Chemo and another surgery were out of the question so they put him under radiation. He now weighs almost 30 lbs. less than me - arrgh! His last scheduled radiation treatment is next Tuesday and, hopefully we'll get good news from the doctors. He should have been dead many, many years ago due to motorcycle crashes when he was racing them for 8 years, being a Army Ranger in Vietnam, the crash of plane he had reserved to fly then decided not to fly that day and the people who decided to take it up stalled and it killed the four of them plus their dog, his many heart attacks starting when he was 38, even when he had one that lasted 3 days and the doctors said there was nothing more they could do for him, well, you get the idea. Talk about a cat with nine lives, well, we're hoping this continues the streak.

Although I do lIve alone, this turned out to be an extra special Christmas season. The 22nd, all of my children, their spouses, and my grandchildren were here to join me at noon, we played the fun Saran Wrap game, shared gifts, sent the grandkids on a “pretend errand” while my DDs set up a surprised baby shower for my first great-grand baby, who is scheduled to arrive the end of March. Christmas Eve, I joined some other ladies for a beautiful service at church then took a drive around the town looking at Christmas lights. One of my daughters did not want me to spend Christmas Day alone, so she asked me to come to KC to spend the day with her family. Man, can my grandsons cook! They are 20 and 27 and they prepared the absolute best Chicken Cordon Bleu I have ever eaten, several other side dishes and Cannoli for dessert...even making their own ricotta cheese to use in it! In the afternoon, we all decorated sugar cookies...before I drove back home facing the eye-blinding sun! Today, I found out that my home-bound brother’s daughter did not bring them a meal yesterday that she had promised and they ate a TV dinner. To me this was heart-breaking...she only lives 2 blocks away, so I make them a home cooked meal and took it to them....they were so appreciative. But I am tired tonight and will just stay in and relax for the evening.

At any rate, that dear little vase just said "Hello!! I'm home!!" as soon as I opened the package....and just about ran to be with it's friends.

Now the jelly....well you will have to take my word that it was just what I needed....but...trust me...I really did!
And all the stuff that melted today is freezing into a solid sheet of ice....BUT...I have heat and a stove!!....and current jelly and home made bread!!!

and maureen, i certainly hope your prognosis is wrong! but based on the note i got from her this afternoon, you certainly could be right...

left to my own inclinations, i would have sent you table linens linda. but i figure you are already drowning in those. but i thought the vase would fit in well with your red and white dishware and i loved it! i'm sure eventually you'll get the link working so folks can see but in the interim, i have a little pic of the "glass insulators" :) i was SURE you'd know what they were, but perhaps some of your forum friends might be able to give you a hand. any folks want to hazard a guess?

Still can't figure oiut the little glass things....I thought maybe a cover for a votive? But I would be aftaid they would crack...
