Princess House Baking Dish

Anyone use Princess House products?

In going through my kitchen cabinets, I came across a Princess House Fantasia Oval Baking Dish with a lid. I remember where it came from, a gift from a friend, but I dont have any paperwork on it or any ideas of what to make in it; besides a pot roast.

It can go in the freezer, the oven and the microwave.

It's a glass casserole....use it to steam veggies in the micro....make mac and cheese and put the lid on to store the leftovers.
And if you look you can also use the top as dish....use it for marinating, or put a couple of breaded chicken breasts in the lid part.
I have several pyrex casseroles with lids....I sue them all the time.

I have a set 6 Princess House " Nouveau ", Saucepans .
With the detachable handles
They are the white Vitro Ceramic type, with Glass lids.

They are something like my Corningware but heavier.

The sizes are from 1 1/2 quarts to 2 3/4 Quarts.
I think the price range is from $89 to $129

They work great for me. Retain heat very well.
Can bake in the oven with the lid to 350 degrees.

One of the reasons to *not* rinse/prewash dishes is if you use an enzyme detergent it needs the food particles to work better. It'll etch glass and stuff if it doesn't have the food particles. I can't explain it well, but it's easy research for a more thorough explanation. Most just recommend scraping the dishes (and really, who wouldn't?!) then into the DW. I haven't had a dishwasher for more than 30 years but I'm starting to miss it. I would get grossed out though when it left stuff on it. When washing by hand and using a good soap it gets clean. Sure, you just put it back in and rewash but it still bugs me. It also bugs me to see people leave dirty dishes in the DW for a week before washing them. Argh! If it takes a week to fill it, you should have a smaller DW or use a top rack only feature. This is what impresses me about the F&P Dish Drawers. And geez, I can wash a few dishes FAR faster than an hour or two for a dishwasher! LOL And when you compare the time to load the dishwasher vs washing, it's pretty close. Time's not a factor. It's the hassle of washing them. I soak my dishes and a quick swish, rinse in HOT water and into the drainer to dry. Putting them away is comparable to time in a DW. Oh, and one thing I found out quickly, the way you load it makes a big difference. You have to learn how the water sprays and make sure it's not blocked for effective washing.

Since you're mostly looking things that don't need a specific size pan, what you really need is a couple of "large" and a couple of "small". What "large" and "small" mean depends on the size of your oven, and the amount you normally cook. For example, if you want to cook lasagna, you need a pan long enough for the noodles to fit. If you cook a lot, like for a family, you need large dishes which hold enough food. If you're cooking for two than you might not need such large dishes as often. I agree with hostapasta that a 14 x 14 oven would be too small for me. There are a lot of things I cook that wouldn't fit in there. Think about WHAT you cook and HOW MANY you cook for. Think about the pans you currently have and how often you use them and what you use them for. Do you have any "favorite" dishes that you use a lot or any "neglected" dishes that almost never get used? Do you prefer rectangular/square dishes or round? Do you cook things which need to be covered (with a lid) during baking or open? Will you NEVER be making cakes/cookies/pies or just seldom? If it's seldom, as opposed to never, you'll still want to have the appropriate pans, but maybe not at your fingertips, so those kinds of things can go into less accessible storage areas.

You could stand them on their sides. You could use tray dividers, to hold them in place. I'd vote for spacing the dividers so that a single dish *just* fits in the space. That way they can stand more upright, and you won't be tempted to put other stuff in there to lean on. These are sort of big for uppers, but you could create something similar w/ wood. Or look into the shelf dividers usually shown in clothes closets; just space them much more closely. You'd have to investigate whether they'd slip if they had a lasagna pan leaning on them. Or, you could find free-standing dividers, like this set of wooden pegs on a stand, often used for holding plates on edge. There are several styles of white wire dividers as well, usually shown holding bakeware (cookie sheets, muffin pans). If one of those wire ones was too big (it had 4 slots, and you only have 3 pans), or the wrong shape (you wish one of the slots was wider), you could scrounge up a bolt cutter, and simply cut one off. (A dremel tool will let you eliminate any sharp edge that's left, if you think you need to). W/ the wooden one, you might be able to either simply remove a peg, or cut it off w/ a saw. If you wanted to store them horizontally w/o stacking them, you could use something like those three-level wire shelves that often are shown holding plates & bowls This one looks a bit spaced out for lasagna pans, since those aren't that thick. So to find one of these w/ smaller spaces, look for cheaper ones, LOL! You could put a wire undershelf basket under a shelf in an upper cabinet, and then it would create a not-too-high cubbyhole ABOVE the plates, or glasses, or whatever. There are one for place mats and for platters, if one of these turns out to be too high, or too short (the place-mat ones are often open on the ends) Or, you could add a shelf to a cabinet, creating a cubbyhole. Just get some plywood cut to fit, and some iron-on edgebanding to cover the front edge. You can also buy shelving covered w/ melamine and have it cut to size. And cabinet-refinishing places will sell shelves in almost any finish (real wood, birch-look melamine, etc.) Space it closely. Depending on how wide the cabinet is, and how much you plan to put on it, you might be able to use 1/2" thick wood instead of the traditional 3/4" And there are frying-pan racks that are something to consider. And of course, the classic organizing idea: Seriously think about whether you truly need all of the pans that you have. (you might--even just one of them is hard to store))

Love this thread, it was so fun to read! DS thought the MIL’s house was BEAUTIFUL, “Especially the creepy lady in the corner because It’s so unique.” Years ago I started slowly (and obsessively) replacing anything that couldn’t go in the dishwasher with items that can. Smaller cookie sheets, glass/stainless measuring cups, silicone tools, etc. It took years of careful purchases and I kept a list and watched for sales because some of those items were pricey. The only thing I use on a daily basis that doesn’t go in my dishwasher now are sharp knives. Anyway, I just knew hand washing dishes would always be my weakness, but I’m great about loading the dishwasher every time I use something. So, pots and pans that do well in the dishwasher are my friends. My second weakness is unloading the dishwasher. That job became my kids’ first ever daily kitchen chore! Starting in preschool they did it together before school while I made breakfast. Now they switch off days. We make a great team! At Christmas my mom offered to wash crystal goblets and asked where my drying rack was. I do own one, but it collapses and was way at the back of the sink. After rummaging around to pull it out, and rinsing it off because it had dish soap on it, I gave it to her. She asked where a towel was to lay under it. That’s when I remembered that earlier that day I opened the towel drawer to find that half the towels had been used once and thrown back in the drawer with the clean ones by my kids. In annoyance I dumped them all in the wash, along with the ones in the bin in the laundry room, and I forgot to put them in the dryer. I told my mom it was fine to use the rack without a towel. It was NOT fine with my mom. She bought me 2 dish draining mats for Valentine’s Day, which is really only a gift holiday for romantic relationships. Whenever people are coming over and it’s messy I tell them they should feel complimented because I’m treating them like one of the family.

Shaun - I use a similar Pyrex dish with cover to bake rice. It turns out perfect every time.

1 part rice
2 parts boiling water or broth
Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes

I am not familiar with the brand you mention. Where can one buy the product?

Ebay has many items.
At one time they were made in France.
Don't know if they are still made there.

Teresa, Baked rice? I gotta try that! I've always cooked my rice on the stovetop.

I have some pyrex that looks very similar to what you have Shaun. All the tops can be inverted to use for other things like marinating, measuring out and like Linda said...to store left overs.

Just don't take it straight out of the oven and put it on a cold surface like granite. It will shatter all over the place!

I have similar casseroles and I also use the lid to microwave long items such as asparagus and corn, or to bake foods that are better in a shallow dish, such as cauliflower cheese with a crusty top or a crispy fruit crumble.

Good suggestions! Thanks.

The paperwork that came with this dish had recipe ideas but it got lost over the years. So thanks for your input especially about the lid, using it for other things besides a lid.

TeresaMN - people used to be able to buy Princess House through home parties much like Tupperware but now you can probably buy them on Ebay, like Lou said.

Shaun - I thought I had heard the name Princess House before. I believe that is what my friend Michelle used to sell. She gave me a set of three votive candles one Christmas.

Yesterday afternoon, shortly before Shaun was starting this thread, I was in a thrift shop buying this item:

It is marked "WEDGWOOD everyday". I paid $7.50 for it, a lot for a thrift store item, but I was happy to get it. It will be ideal for making no-knead bread. Also, it can be used for two pans of enchiladas or lasagna. Casseroles for dishes such as mac and cheese can be just about any shape but bread, enchiladas and lasagna need the rectangular shape.

I think you are right on both points. Retail price would be a lot more. And it shows no signs of use whatever. You have a good eye.

I am very pleased with this purchase because it is so hard to find something so well suited to my needs when deliberately searching. This just fell into my hands. I'm not normally so lucky.
