Princess House Baking Dish

Anyone use Princess House products?

In going through my kitchen cabinets, I came across a Princess House Fantasia Oval Baking Dish with a lid. I remember where it came from, a gift from a friend, but I dont have any paperwork on it or any ideas of what to make in it; besides a pot roast.

It can go in the freezer, the oven and the microwave.

It's a glass casserole....use it to steam veggies in the micro....make mac and cheese and put the lid on to store the leftovers.
And if you look you can also use the top as dish....use it for marinating, or put a couple of breaded chicken breasts in the lid part.
I have several pyrex casseroles with lids....I sue them all the time.

I have a set 6 Princess House " Nouveau ", Saucepans .
With the detachable handles
They are the white Vitro Ceramic type, with Glass lids.

They are something like my Corningware but heavier.

The sizes are from 1 1/2 quarts to 2 3/4 Quarts.
I think the price range is from $89 to $129

They work great for me. Retain heat very well.
Can bake in the oven with the lid to 350 degrees.

I would cook it like a pot roast with the Hungarian seasonings in the following recipe, then pull it off the bones in big hunks and serve the meat with noodles and a cucumber salad. Alexa ******************************************************** Gomba Porkolt - Pork And Mushroom Stew Time 120 minutesServes 6Ingredients -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-2 lbs pork steaks, cut in cubes and trim the fat 2 med. onions chopped 4 T of oil 2 tsp paprika 3 cloves garlic pressed salt to taste pepper to taste water as needed sour cream fresh mushrooms cleaned and chopped in half, more if large. How to make it -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- in frying pan, saute onions in oil til transparent, add paprika and mix together add cubes of meat to lightly brown and stir well to not burn add water so that it just covers the meat add pressed garlic and salt and pepper to taste, mix well and often during cooking cook on low with cover for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours til meat is tender once done add sourcream and mix well. serve with mashed potatoes and cucumber salad.

You could stand them on their sides. You could use tray dividers, to hold them in place. I'd vote for spacing the dividers so that a single dish *just* fits in the space. That way they can stand more upright, and you won't be tempted to put other stuff in there to lean on. These are sort of big for uppers, but you could create something similar w/ wood. Or look into the shelf dividers usually shown in clothes closets; just space them much more closely. You'd have to investigate whether they'd slip if they had a lasagna pan leaning on them. Or, you could find free-standing dividers, like this set of wooden pegs on a stand, often used for holding plates on edge. There are several styles of white wire dividers as well, usually shown holding bakeware (cookie sheets, muffin pans). If one of those wire ones was too big (it had 4 slots, and you only have 3 pans), or the wrong shape (you wish one of the slots was wider), you could scrounge up a bolt cutter, and simply cut one off. (A dremel tool will let you eliminate any sharp edge that's left, if you think you need to). W/ the wooden one, you might be able to either simply remove a peg, or cut it off w/ a saw. If you wanted to store them horizontally w/o stacking them, you could use something like those three-level wire shelves that often are shown holding plates & bowls This one looks a bit spaced out for lasagna pans, since those aren't that thick. So to find one of these w/ smaller spaces, look for cheaper ones, LOL! You could put a wire undershelf basket under a shelf in an upper cabinet, and then it would create a not-too-high cubbyhole ABOVE the plates, or glasses, or whatever. There are one for place mats and for platters, if one of these turns out to be too high, or too short (the place-mat ones are often open on the ends) Or, you could add a shelf to a cabinet, creating a cubbyhole. Just get some plywood cut to fit, and some iron-on edgebanding to cover the front edge. You can also buy shelving covered w/ melamine and have it cut to size. And cabinet-refinishing places will sell shelves in almost any finish (real wood, birch-look melamine, etc.) Space it closely. Depending on how wide the cabinet is, and how much you plan to put on it, you might be able to use 1/2" thick wood instead of the traditional 3/4" And there are frying-pan racks that are something to consider. And of course, the classic organizing idea: Seriously think about whether you truly need all of the pans that you have. (you might--even just one of them is hard to store))

I'm a big fan of meatballs so that'd be a first choice for me. A good ham, even a turkey would be simple as would be the pulled pork. A good hearty chicken salad (a good one with nuts, grapes, etc) would be on my plate too. A spread of meats and cheeses for a build your own sandwich would be good too with good quality buns, breads or the like. Even a mini salad bar would be nice and could be used for topping a sandwich if they should so choose. Or go one better for a taco bar. Is this going to be a standing, walkaround affair or sit down? Soup and chili are not good options for stand and mingle but it's a good time of year for it. A lighter scalloped potatoes and ham would work well too. If the food needs to be out a long time though, I'd definitely look for some electric roasters, crockpots, even electric frypans wok well as a chafing dish

Aka Peggy, I'd look for recipes for classic French gratins. Here's one from Jacques Pepin. Gratin of Cabbage This dish is usually served as a vegetable course, but it can also be served as a first course. It is good reheated, and left over, it can be used in a soup or stew. To enrich it, add little pieces of leftover meat, such as ham, sausage, or roast, as well as pieces of other vegetables. Use white cabbage or savoy cabbage, which is leafier. 1 2 1/2-pound head cabbage 2 cups water 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup grated Swiss cheese 2/3 cup fresh bread crumbs Cut the cabbage in half, remove the core, and cut the cabbage across into 1/2-inch slices. Place the shredded cabbage in a pot, preferably stainless steel, and add the 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes. By then the cabbage should be wilted and soft, but still a bit firm, and most of the water should have evaporated. If any water is left, keep cooking with the lid off until no water is visible and the cabbage is just moist. Pour into a gratin dish and sprinkle with the salt, pepper, butter, and Swiss cheese. Shaun - I use a similar Pyrex dish with cover to bake rice. It turns out perfect every time.

1 part rice
2 parts boiling water or broth
Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes

I am not familiar with the brand you mention. Where can one buy the product?

Ebay has many items.
At one time they were made in France.
Don't know if they are still made there.

Teresa, Baked rice? I gotta try that! I've always cooked my rice on the stovetop.

I have some pyrex that looks very similar to what you have Shaun. All the tops can be inverted to use for other things like marinating, measuring out and like Linda said...to store left overs.

Just don't take it straight out of the oven and put it on a cold surface like granite. It will shatter all over the place!

I have similar casseroles and I also use the lid to microwave long items such as asparagus and corn, or to bake foods that are better in a shallow dish, such as cauliflower cheese with a crusty top or a crispy fruit crumble.

Good suggestions! Thanks.

The paperwork that came with this dish had recipe ideas but it got lost over the years. So thanks for your input especially about the lid, using it for other things besides a lid.

TeresaMN - people used to be able to buy Princess House through home parties much like Tupperware but now you can probably buy them on Ebay, like Lou said.

Shaun - I thought I had heard the name Princess House before. I believe that is what my friend Michelle used to sell. She gave me a set of three votive candles one Christmas.

Yesterday afternoon, shortly before Shaun was starting this thread, I was in a thrift shop buying this item:

It is marked "WEDGWOOD everyday". I paid $7.50 for it, a lot for a thrift store item, but I was happy to get it. It will be ideal for making no-knead bread. Also, it can be used for two pans of enchiladas or lasagna. Casseroles for dishes such as mac and cheese can be just about any shape but bread, enchiladas and lasagna need the rectangular shape.

I think you are right on both points. Retail price would be a lot more. And it shows no signs of use whatever. You have a good eye.

I am very pleased with this purchase because it is so hard to find something so well suited to my needs when deliberately searching. This just fell into my hands. I'm not normally so lucky.
