Coffee grinder just died

Bought this darn Proctor Silex coffee grinder just a few months ago. I used it to grind flax seeds and dried onion flakes, once every two weeks or so. Got it out today and it refused to work! I had used it no more than 10 times before it died! The old one I had was a much better grinder. I used it every week and it last for two years. Unfortunately, they stopped making it. Stepson said he would buy one for me for Christmas. Anyone knows a decent coffee grinder that doesn't cost more than $25? Stepson is still in school so I don't want him to pay more than that on a present for me. Thanks in advance! Al

Do you just want it for spices and the like though right??

I'm happy with my Mr. Coffee..it's served me well as a Coffee Bean 'mill' for years...

I'm planing on buying a Burr type Coffee Grinder though in the next few months. Costco has one for 24.99..
Not sure if it will last as long as Mr Coffee though..LOL

Yup, I pretty much just use it to grind flax seeds and onion flakes. I like compact size because it doesn't take up much space.

I don't believe I have seen Mr. Coffee in Wal-mart in Canada. But I will go to a special store to look.

Yes, for regular coffee, it can make a large mug. When you press the "coffee" option, it will ask if you want two cups, which if you push yes, will give you a large mug full of wonderful coffee. If you don't push yes, it will give you what to me is a half cup, but is probably a European full cup. Spio, it will do that but you can also program the amount to make a larger cup of coffee all the time if most of your cups are larger like ours are. Hit settings, then prog the amount, then coffee, and it will keep brewing until you hit the stop button. That amt then becomes your standard. When brewing any cop you can always hit stop sooner if you just have a tiny cup, or just want 1/2 cup. That also works for the other settings as well, e.g. settings, prog the amt, hot water.

Thanks again everyone. I'll let you all know if/when I decide or what I get. You all have certainly given me a lot of food for thought. Cherryfizz, no you didn't get off topic at all, since I'm looking for whatever it takes for a good cup of coffee. I 'had' a coffee press, (got it used in a box from an auction) and gave it away without even trying it. Maybe I need another one, even if it is just for those rare occasions when the power is out, yet I can still heat things because I have a gas range. Maybe before getting a grinder I'll try some various coffees freshly ground in the store and invest in a vacuum sealing coffee canister. hmmmm.............

Biz, I'm using a 15 year old Krups blade grinder. I grind coffee fresh daily, about one pot's worth, and it works really well. They are about $20, I think they were $15 when I got mine years ago. I'm enough of a coffee hound that I drink coffee every day, I want fresh beans, medium roast and I want them ground freshly every day. I'm not spending a lot of money to grind one pot's worth of beans daily, though. Coffeemakers? At work I have a Hamilton Beach with a carafe, so the coffee doesn't "cook" all day. At home I have a Gevalia that I got free when I bought coffee, then I cancelled the membership, LOL. I also have a nice little one cup french press that I use on work mornings because I make coffee when I get to work. Annie

How to get smell out of coffee grinder

DH just did this sunday past. He pulled out the spice grinder wanting to make expresso... (i over roasted a small batch of beans. I set the timer but went out front with the pups and forgot, haha) Just enough to get some nice black oily beans. I just said smell it. Do you really want your expresso to smell like, um, a barnyard? So he dug out the old burr grinder. -Our main grinder is calibrated to our everyday grind and complicated to change it. I just use rice between spices and grains. Activated charcoal is a good idea. I have some in capsule form from the health food store. I just have it handy for emergencies...spider bites, snake bites etc. I do use fine ground coffee in some spice mixes so it would not bother me much. Rice works enough for me.

Krups grinders are pretty good for the price. I think they sell for around $17 for the black/white one and $24 for the silver. The two are made by different companies (gotta love rebranding), and the silver has the better motor, button and thicker top. I know several people who've had them for 5-6 years. You used to be able to buy new blades for them when the blade got dull. Don't know if that is still true. Sears, Macy's, Home Depot usually have them.

Just tell him, whatever he does, not to buy a Bodum. It is the worst coffee grinder I have ever used. The only way I can get evenly ground coffee is by shaking it up and down and all around as it grinds, and then stopping every so often to stir the coffee with a chopstick so that the bottom doesn't get ground to coffee while the top has chunks in it.

I have had a Mr. Coffee, and a Krups, both of which were excellent (and are still working, having been delegated to spices and such when we bought the Bodum because they'd gotten pretty worn and beaten up in one way or another and didn't look nice on the counter anymore) and both of which sell for under $25 unless you get into really fancy schmancy models which is really unnecessary.

I was in Ace Hardware this afternoon...and they had the Krups and some other brand, both under $20.

I have two, one at work and one at home and they are both Krups. Each cost less than $20 and both are over 10 years old. The one at work gets used five days a week, sometimes twice a day. The one at home gets used on weekends, and they are both still going strong.

I had a Braun, it lasted about a year before one of the blades broke. I did see a burr grinder of some kind, maybe a Cuisinart, at Kohl's for $24.99.
