Coffee grinder just died

Bought this darn Proctor Silex coffee grinder just a few months ago. I used it to grind flax seeds and dried onion flakes, once every two weeks or so. Got it out today and it refused to work! I had used it no more than 10 times before it died! The old one I had was a much better grinder. I used it every week and it last for two years. Unfortunately, they stopped making it. Stepson said he would buy one for me for Christmas. Anyone knows a decent coffee grinder that doesn't cost more than $25? Stepson is still in school so I don't want him to pay more than that on a present for me. Thanks in advance! Al

Do you just want it for spices and the like though right??

I'm happy with my Mr. Coffee..it's served me well as a Coffee Bean 'mill' for years...

I'm planing on buying a Burr type Coffee Grinder though in the next few months. Costco has one for 24.99..
Not sure if it will last as long as Mr Coffee though..LOL

Yup, I pretty much just use it to grind flax seeds and onion flakes. I like compact size because it doesn't take up much space.

I don't believe I have seen Mr. Coffee in Wal-mart in Canada. But I will go to a special store to look.

Thanks again everyone. I'll let you all know if/when I decide or what I get. You all have certainly given me a lot of food for thought. Cherryfizz, no you didn't get off topic at all, since I'm looking for whatever it takes for a good cup of coffee. I 'had' a coffee press, (got it used in a box from an auction) and gave it away without even trying it. Maybe I need another one, even if it is just for those rare occasions when the power is out, yet I can still heat things because I have a gas range. Maybe before getting a grinder I'll try some various coffees freshly ground in the store and invest in a vacuum sealing coffee canister. hmmmm.............

My parents gave us a "new" one that they'd won in a game at a party. It was brand new to them and came to us brand new. I have no idea the brand, but it was for RV'ers, so I assumed that perhaps it was sold at Camping World or similar. It's tall, skinny, and is even skinnier where you hold your hand. You put the beans in it, place it firmly on a table, and turn the handle. And grind. And grind. And grind. And grind. And grind. Just when you think you may be done, you grind some more. My husband must be a sadist, he loves the thing and uses it every day. Not me. Give me the electric one. Dump beans in, push down, Whirrrrrrrrrr----, done. Donna

Walt, yes, I did receive the Mazzer Mini burrs and made the modifications to fit them. Unfortunately, while the grind was reasonably uniform for Turkish, the speed was not; it took almost 25 minutes to grind about half a pound of freshly-roasted beans. The motor felt very weak and kept struggling. Furthermore, the chute is badly designed and a lot of ground coffee gets lodged there instead of dropping out. It may be a decent grinder for things like french press, but it cannot handle fine grinds (espresso and Turkish). Very disappointing - I had to return it. BTW, here are the original burr (left) and the much better replacement (right): The cutting edges on the KA burr are a joke. At most, they're crushing the beans instead of cutting them. OTOH, the ones on the Mazzer Mini are really sharp.

We have the Baratza Virtuoso+ coffee grinder. Love it, and the footprint is not very big compared to other burr grinders. It has conical burrs and 40 grinder settings so that you can set it for the best grind for brew coffee, espresso, french press, or whatever you like. The bin that collects the ground coffee is backlit by LEDs, not sure whether that matters. Its digital grind timer setting can be a little sensitive, so that if you set it to e.g., grind for 15.3 seconds, and you don't turn the dial with a light touch, it might turn to 17.5 seconds or some other time, so you just have to watch for that, it's not a big deal. As to whether it is attractive, well, it looks like a coffee grinder, so it is neither unattractive nor attractive; it is what it is.

Krups grinders are pretty good for the price. I think they sell for around $17 for the black/white one and $24 for the silver. The two are made by different companies (gotta love rebranding), and the silver has the better motor, button and thicker top. I know several people who've had them for 5-6 years. You used to be able to buy new blades for them when the blade got dull. Don't know if that is still true. Sears, Macy's, Home Depot usually have them.

Just tell him, whatever he does, not to buy a Bodum. It is the worst coffee grinder I have ever used. The only way I can get evenly ground coffee is by shaking it up and down and all around as it grinds, and then stopping every so often to stir the coffee with a chopstick so that the bottom doesn't get ground to coffee while the top has chunks in it.

I have had a Mr. Coffee, and a Krups, both of which were excellent (and are still working, having been delegated to spices and such when we bought the Bodum because they'd gotten pretty worn and beaten up in one way or another and didn't look nice on the counter anymore) and both of which sell for under $25 unless you get into really fancy schmancy models which is really unnecessary.

I was in Ace Hardware this afternoon...and they had the Krups and some other brand, both under $20.

I have two, one at work and one at home and they are both Krups. Each cost less than $20 and both are over 10 years old. The one at work gets used five days a week, sometimes twice a day. The one at home gets used on weekends, and they are both still going strong.

I had a Braun, it lasted about a year before one of the blades broke. I did see a burr grinder of some kind, maybe a Cuisinart, at Kohl's for $24.99.
