cat collars

I have 3 indoor cats. I purchased safety collars with name tags for all three for 2 reasons. 1. just in case they get outside and wander. So far only the oldest has - he opened up a hole in a screen door but luckily he didn't go far. We realized he was out when we opened the front door and lo and behold there he was! 2. so the tingling sound of the name tag will make it easier to find Koko (the middle child), since she loves to play hide and seek when it's grooming time and I can't find her spot.

However, they know how to get them off, then they take them and hide them. Any other collars that might work?

Are these safety collars that they're unsnapping, or are the cats slipping the buckle type collars off their neck?

Good luck with this one! The last collar I put on my indoor only cat was "placed" in the middle of my living room floor, completely unbuckled, about 3 days after I put it on her. Haven't put one on her again since.

Just curious, but do you live in a brick building? I've noticed tiny red spiders outside and they were near the brick, not on any plants. Here are the symptoms of red spider mite on plants: Undersides of leaves become speckled with pale yellow, brown or bronze colored dota and become dusty in appearance. A heavy infestation may show evidence of fine webs. Regular foliar spraying with hot water may help. For a large infestation you might use Kelthane. Be sure to spray under the leaves. There are many miticides which will kill spider mite. Before using chemicals, check to see if this was just one incidence of spider mites. Nancy

I dunno, thats definately weird. Both my cats wear break-away collars made of nylon, and they definately never shut-up, and their talking is anything but quiet.

I just wanted to say thank you for everyone's advice and imput. I still have not seen the black and white cat who I wrote the original post for. I can only hope that she had a great home and went back to it, or that someone else was lucky enough to take her in. She seemed like a very lovable pet. The gray tiger striped cat comes to see me everyday. He (at least I think its a he) is a little skittish, sometimes lets me pet him, rubs up against me, but never lets me pick him up. I would love to try to take him to the vet, and maybe in time he will trust me enough to let me do so. In the meantime, I think of him as my outdoor kitty, and I leave food and water out for him every day. Even on the days I don't see him, I know he was here because by the time I bring the food bowl back in every night it is empty, or close to it. I liked the idea of getting it a collar, and I think I am going to get him one, and if I am really lucky he will even wear it! My baby kitten, April, has learned not to go outside... at least for now anyways. One day in the cage while I was at work taught her to stay inside when I come home! Its funny- I bought the cage only to use on vacation and when I take her to my parents house, but she loves the thing. Its like a kid and their bedroom- they love being there until it becomes a punishment. April plays in her cage and sleeps in her cage all the time. I have it set up in the living room and leave the door open, but when she is bad she gets "sent to her room" (meaning she gets put in the cage and I close the door instead of free roam) and she knows she's in trouble. I started putting her in the cage for half an hour everytime she bolted outside, and when she didn't quite get the picture I put her in it with food and her extra litter box for a whole day while I was at work. She's been an angel since.

I understand leaving collars off indoor cats, but not outdoor cats. Can you get a breakaway collar? the trick is to train them beginning in early kittenhood to accept the collar. Where Im coming from - my cat was lost for 6 weeks once and I cant tell you how extraordinarily difficult it was due to the fact that without collar and tags, there's no way to know if the cat that someone has reported to you is lost or if its just a neighborhood cat. Seriously, we're talking 100+ reports of cats and you go check it out and more often than not it turns out to be some neighborhood cat. ryseryse, why not build a cat enclosure? They can be secure, and youll know that theyll be OK (outdoor cats get lost too -injured, chased off by dogs or ferals, etc.) It baffles me why people will spend untold $$$ on enclosures and all kinds of stuff for their dogs, but not cats. They'll spend all kinds of time and energy training dogs but not cats.

You should have your cats microchipped --they certainly can't get those things out. Also, I bought my cat a really cute collar at The Modern Pet, I think their web address is www.themodernpet.com, that has managed to stay on for several months. It's still a break away but maybe the clasp is a little stronger than most or something. Good luck.

My Sofie, who lives indoors, wears a collar when we visit. The collar has some elastic on part of it, instead of the snap. She does not get it off.

She is also microchipped.

Although your cats can get the safety collars off, you are doing your pets a great service by using that type of collar.

SIL lost 1 yr. old lab this past summer while she and her brother were playing in the yard. She caught her jaw under his collar, he drug her around the yard and asphixiated her. The surviving dog is permanently scarred from the experience of watching his sibling die.

The dogs were in a fenced yard playing. Outside for no more than 5 minutes before it happened. Too sickening to think about, let alone experience. My dogs haven't worn collars on since that day, July 25, 2006. I can't ever burn the memory of it out of my mind. I have sent out so many PSA on safety collars to friends, colleagues, family, everyone that I know for that matter. I would never want to see that happen to anyone's pet.

I think I would microchip the cats.

The elastic on the collar serves to allow the animal to free itself, so it is a safety collar.

I like the ones with elastic too. I do find them around the house sometimes but that is a good thing in my opinion. Microchipping is fine but even today, most shelters don't have scanners or they don't use them. :-(
