Need pics of trim--door/window combo...

I'm working on the dining area of the kitchen, while trying to decide on flooring for kitchen, dining, and playroom. The back door, into the mudroom, is very close to a window--7.5" from inside of window frame to inside of door frame. I'd like to trim the door and window as one unit, in the same color (Adobe White) as the kitchen trim. I have one similar picture that I'm reposting from eastfallsglass' kitchen, which is perfect in every way, IMO:

I know I've seen pics of similar treatments, but I can't find any by searching on 'door/window combo' or 'door adjacent to window.' I'd appreciate it if anyone can post similar pics.

Not the best picture, but here's the back door in our laundry room (which will actually be ripped out in the remodel).

It has 7" between the window and the door. I think to make it look good you'll need the rest of the trim to be about the same size as the piece of trim between the door and window.

One problem you have is that to make this work, the top of the door and window need to be the same height. IMO, the point of the look is to make it look the the main trim surrounds the door and window together as a single opening. To do that you need a single top trim that spans both and is at least as dominate as the trim between the window and door. It looks like your window is slightly lower than the door, so I'm not sure how that would look.

I love your house! The floors and the board walls are great. The pictures remind me of a gallery space in the Berkshires that really struck me. I love simple and old styles, but this gallery had a living space attached that was spare and modern, and it looked outstanding. The gallery itself had a small collection of large objects, including a wall of huge clocks from an old factory arranged on the wall going up the stairs. I think the walls call out for few, but large things on them. The one area that doesn't seem right to me is the board and batten door under the transom, and the table next to it. The horizontal battens jumped out at me -- I think painting them the same color as the door would be more harmonious than having that contrasting color. Since the doorway is tall and narrow, emphasizing the horizontal battens is going against the grain, to my eye. I get the feeling the original door was frame and panel like your other ones. Also, the height of that door and the window next to it seem to dwarf the table. I think it looked better under the opposite window. As others said, take your time and find the right pieces to do justice to your beautiful and unique house. Enjoy!

Do you need the dropleaf table and chairs, or is it just there because you like it? How many people do you need to seat in the space on a regular basis? Having done it several times, I would never again buy a couch and loveseat combo. I think buying either a couch or a loveseat, and then a pair of occasional chairs or recliners, is the way to go for versatility and interest. Is the fireplace going to be real, or a faux (electric or gel fuel) fireplace? If it is faux, i would seriously consider putting the fireplace /tv combo on the shorter inside wall opposite the window, and preserving the larger end wall for a couch and tables/lamps. I would then put two chairs in front of the window with another table/lamp. The dropleaf and chairs could then span the space across the room by the entry Assuming you want to keep the chairs and table, and the fireplace and tv are on the end wall, I would put the couch (no loveseat) across the room with its back to the entry. I creates a nice defined entryway for you. Put a sofa table behind it. I would then put a pair of chairs in front of the window, with a table between them, and put the dining table and chairs against the inside wall.

Moving bearing walls can be easy and difficult. It can be expensive especially with getting an engineer and permits. Installiing a window in a wet area needs some special attention. It needs to be flashed or proofed in some way and not relying on a caulk joint. The window can be pulled in flush with wall substrate Or recessed . The sill / stool area should be tipped slightly to drain water to the inside. You are essentially waterproofing the window like you would on the outside when doing a nail fin new construction window so all water that leaks gets channels to the outside of the waterproof membrane and channels into the tub.

So, just to come full circle on this thread - which no one may give two hoots about but me, lol, but just in case this can be a useful reference for someone in the future - we went with the cream cabinets with cafe glaze, Cambria Berkeley, the cappucino tile backsplash, and Savannah Grey thin brick on the island base for the texture we wanted (and where feet can touch and rest and no worries about marks).

It looks like the window height is lower than the door. If so, can you raise it to be at the same height? Otherwise, I don't see a problem with trimming it like your inspiration pic, although it is hard to see the details in your photo.

The different heights is a good point, but I think if you used the same trim around the door that you have around the window, now...it would look very nice. Or, you could double the trim above the window and add a valance, which would disguise the lower trim and make the other trim, look more uniform. Would that work? :)

gregincal, thank you for the picture. I'm looking for ideas--worst case scenario, I trim the window and door individually, with 2" wide trim, and leave a 3" strip of painted wall between. The door and window, on the mudroom side, are trimmed that way (the trim was already attached to the exterior door frame), and it looks OK.

I can replace the picture-frame molding around the window, adding a filler piece at the top. Or, I can leave the trim as is--the top of the window trim lines up with where the top piece of door trim will start. Although none of the other windows or doors in the house have 'beading', I could add a bull-nosed bead (as in your example), then molding above that, spanning the window and door, as you suggest.

catbuilder, thanks for the advice. Sorry about the poor quality, back-lit picture--sun was streaming in the mudroom windows this AM. I'm going to try to come up with a solution that doesn't involve moving the window up. The trim isn't consistent from room-to-room, so this can be unique.

lavender, do you mean a wood valance (as was common over sinks in 50's kitchens), or a fabric valance? We've never had a window treatment there--it faces the back yard and barn, southern exposure, and I like all the light coming in. I may use a filler piece on top, which I think is what you're suggesting, then put trim along the bottom, as in eastfallsglass' pic, to balance it. Thank you.
