It's almost here-wait til Derby Day

Do you have a specific time of year that you plant your annuals,or the perfect time when your flower beds look their best. Rule of thunb here, in Kentucky, is to plant after Derby Day, that is when the danger of frost is gone. We had snow showers all day on April 7th. So you can see why we have to wait. This is a picture of my walkway last year on Derby Day. I have already changed some things, but that is the fun in gardening-it is always changing.

Sue, that looks so nice. I would like to see more of your yard, hint, hint.

I live just south of Memphis. April 15th is supposed to be our last day of frost danger in this area. It usually works, but last year there was a cold snap about a week after that. I wait til the 15th or a few days later to plant annuals.

I think where we live the last frost date is May 10th, but even then you never know, it is safer to wait until the end of May here in central Indiana.

Your garden really looks nice. Right now my daffodils are still really blooming on my back hillside.

Karen, I have been wondering about your health these days. I don't like hearing that you are so uncomfortable. What do the doctors say? I'd don't seem to have a direct line to God, but you're in my prayers. If He's tuned in most nights, he hears my list and you're on it. Do keep us informed. You and I are on the same page when it comes to pink. The china (KPM "Normandie") that I used on the May Table was inherited from my mother. She had what she called a dessert set (square plates, larger than salad plates but smaller than dinner plates) and a large square bowl in the pattern for years. She LOVED them. Then, one day when she was in her mid sixties, she walked into a consignment shop and there was the whole set, place settings for 12 and a number of serving pieces. She thought she'd died and gone to heaven. For some reason, the store hadn't had any nibbles on the dishes and when she asked them to call the owner to see if she'd come down in price, she got them for a song. I use them from time-to-time now and think of her delight when she called to tell me about finding them. I think I have a little granddaughter that is going to be a "pink person" even when she's grown, so they will be appreciated again some day, in the same way my mama did. I think I've seen some of your horse collection. It's super. And aren't you the one with that wonderful merry-go-round horsie??? You could do a great Derby table without half trying. When you start to feel better, I'm going to start bugging you. Just start by slappin' down the dishes and settin' a few hoses on the table. Add a few roses (Run for the Roses?) and you're done! OA

Luckygal, where in the world are you? Somewhere near a beach obviously--but which one. Sorry no good luck on the TS shopping, do keep trying! Jeanne, I have two baker's racks outside, one is a corner unit--but neither look nearly as cute as yours with your collections and vignettes. I need to work on mine I think. That is so neat that you do the Farmer's market too. Candy, I'm another one who does tablescapes for my "imaginary" friends. DH will only eat at the table when we have company--rest of the time he prefers to eat in front of the tv. Karen, I didn't do a table, but I did glue a little cheese tray and glass dome on a pedestal and decorate it--can I get any points for that? ;o) Kathleen, the rooster napkins like in your photo that you shared with me are some of my favs. We don't do sit down breakfast often, but I like to just sit the table and display them on the plates because they look so cute.

My BF is a carpenter. I am AMAZED at the variety of how well these contractors run their businesses. Guys who are handy with tools aren't always very savvy about how to manage the people aspects. Some are pretty good but many are downright lousy. Sometimes it amazes me how they have him running from job to job, when a little pre-planning could have avoided it and been a much more efficient use of his time. However, in their defense, they are often juggling jobs of great variety in the variables, and not everyone has the natural talent to figure out how to make all the work flow well. Even if they did, they have to deal with suppliers and other tradesmen, who also varry in their delivery skills, so it's just part of the landscape for them. Also, their profit margin is getting lower these days, (at least in the US where there is NO labor shortage) and taking time to plan just isn't in the budget. Not sure how much money they could save by being more efficient, but so far it seems like there isn't a great demand for the time management/work flow set of skills in the trade. A lot of times it's, "Hurry up and wait." Believe me, it is frustrating sometimes for the workmen too, but they are used to it, they have to deal with all kinds of snafus on a daily basis, due to all the variables involved. If they seem a little insensitive, it's because they have to develop thick skin or they'd have imploded from frustration long ago. That's one thing I love about my Honey, he doesn't frustrate easily. Except for when we go on vacation, oddly. I think he saves up all his frustration and then releases it when he's finally away from work. Geeze, any little hiccup (like a fly in the motel room) and he goes ballistic while on vacation, lol! He wants everything to go perfectly smooth. That's his idea of vacation, never having to deal with a single personal issue or snafu!!

Hi friends. Today was a great day, a very long day and my feet hurt so much I had to take my shoes off and walk without them for a while. The weather was absolutely beautiful! What an experience. First we were able to go into the paddock that is where all the owners go along with their horses. First my husband was only able to go but then an extra ticket came along and I was there too. Our horse was Funny Feeling, the 4th race number 10. And guess what she won!! Everything happened very fast, we were escorted to the winner's circle and they took a picture of all of us. When I get my pictures I'll download them. A picture of our horse winning will be sent to us. The purse was only $50,000 but what a race. Pete and I got a picture of us holding the trophy. By the way when I picked up that hat at Dees' (what a terrible experience) my hat was not done right, it took them 3 times to fix it, still not right but I'm accepting what I cannot change. I didnt get the pink hat I wore the one I bought at Macys and I got compliments all day long. So I've learned no stressing about sill stuff. Tomorrow will be a terrible weather day but I'm under cover but my sons and soninlaw and nephew are not. We bought them rain gear, etc. Talk to you tomorrow. The race starts at 5:45 but the commentators will begin at 4. Hope we win or come close and if not the experience was worth a lot. Thank you everyone!

I took the hint. These are all last year picture, and we have since changed over to solar path lights, we have changed to creek rock for the edging around everthing (can you say over kill) and we have used the color enhanced mulch in a dark brown to match the house. When it gets pretty this year I will take more picture.

Thanks guys, I love working in my flower beds. I change them around every few years, because it seems like, even if if I have some things I really like, after a while I don't really appreciate them so much, so I change things up. To the outside world it may look like a huge hodge podge, but it is my stress release.

The hostas on the left side of the picture have all been changed over to monkey grass this year, because that area is in the full sun, the hostas look great in the spring but as summer drones on they start looking pretty bad and the monkey grass just looks beautiful all season. After a couple of years it will be huge and gorgeous.

How absolutely beautiful; I envy your talent!

Here in New England the generally-accepted "rule" is to wait until Memorial Day to be safe. :-(

I always shop for flowering plants the week after Mothers Day. Your walkway looks lovely!

Just planted the front walkway. Want to finish the bit that is in the shade most of the day today.

Then I have to tackle the back yard and cut down vines and shrubs coming into the yard from the neighbors. Tomatoes need to be put in this month too.

I have some of that purple stuff too, I just don't remember what it is called.

The blue stuff is Salvia, I don't know what variation though.
I have several flower beds, and they are all trial and error and works in progress, I know very little about flowers so I am learning as I go. I always have a work in progress.
Due to the recent ice storm we lost a couple of beautiful pines in our back yard. Looks like a new place for a bench and a flower bed.

gorgeous Sue!! I split my hostas yesterday before the rain came...normally I start planting my annuals by the middle of April...it's gonna be closer to May 1st this year...our yard is mostly natural and real sloppy right now so I do lots of containers on our deck and call it a day!
