It's almost here-wait til Derby Day

Do you have a specific time of year that you plant your annuals,or the perfect time when your flower beds look their best. Rule of thunb here, in Kentucky, is to plant after Derby Day, that is when the danger of frost is gone. We had snow showers all day on April 7th. So you can see why we have to wait. This is a picture of my walkway last year on Derby Day. I have already changed some things, but that is the fun in gardening-it is always changing.

Sue, that looks so nice. I would like to see more of your yard, hint, hint.

I live just south of Memphis. April 15th is supposed to be our last day of frost danger in this area. It usually works, but last year there was a cold snap about a week after that. I wait til the 15th or a few days later to plant annuals.

I think where we live the last frost date is May 10th, but even then you never know, it is safer to wait until the end of May here in central Indiana.

Your garden really looks nice. Right now my daffodils are still really blooming on my back hillside.

My BF is a carpenter. I am AMAZED at the variety of how well these contractors run their businesses. Guys who are handy with tools aren't always very savvy about how to manage the people aspects. Some are pretty good but many are downright lousy. Sometimes it amazes me how they have him running from job to job, when a little pre-planning could have avoided it and been a much more efficient use of his time. However, in their defense, they are often juggling jobs of great variety in the variables, and not everyone has the natural talent to figure out how to make all the work flow well. Even if they did, they have to deal with suppliers and other tradesmen, who also varry in their delivery skills, so it's just part of the landscape for them. Also, their profit margin is getting lower these days, (at least in the US where there is NO labor shortage) and taking time to plan just isn't in the budget. Not sure how much money they could save by being more efficient, but so far it seems like there isn't a great demand for the time management/work flow set of skills in the trade. A lot of times it's, "Hurry up and wait." Believe me, it is frustrating sometimes for the workmen too, but they are used to it, they have to deal with all kinds of snafus on a daily basis, due to all the variables involved. If they seem a little insensitive, it's because they have to develop thick skin or they'd have imploded from frustration long ago. That's one thing I love about my Honey, he doesn't frustrate easily. Except for when we go on vacation, oddly. I think he saves up all his frustration and then releases it when he's finally away from work. Geeze, any little hiccup (like a fly in the motel room) and he goes ballistic while on vacation, lol! He wants everything to go perfectly smooth. That's his idea of vacation, never having to deal with a single personal issue or snafu!!

The Hot Browns would be terrific, but since they are predicting rain (GGGRRRRRRRR) the house will be FILLED with kids of all ages and they will be getting on my last nerve. I need EASY at this point!. I am also thinking the Crab Canoe and "crap cakes" may be too much crab and will probably substitute something else for the crap cakes.... It really needs to be a "do ahead" that I can just reheat (or serve cold). I am off to scout Malna's link for inspiration! I don't have any advice.. but I would share my frustration with the school system. We've had ongoing problems with SD lying and breaking the rules. Last year, she was buying hot lunch on Fridays when her mom was picking her up from school. She was eating two lunches and we talked about it and all she would say is 'I wanted to'. So, this year we put a restriction on her lunch card after she bought unauthorized meals and snacks with her card. Well, even though her card is supposed to have a restriction... the Friday before she left for Spring Break, she bought another meal. She figured she was going to her mom for 10 days and we couldn't do anything about it. (She told us this when we asked her about it) Of course, I sent the school an email asking them how they allowed her to buy a meal when she had no money in her account and we had already put a restriction on it... I still have not received a response. SD has agreed to earn the money to pay for the meal... it's not about the money, but that's the consequence to her action. She didn't need it, she wanted it and she can pay for it. Also, the Monday before spring break... it was her birthday. She handed out the leftover cupcakes on the bus & the bus driver said she was getting a citation. Instead, the week she was gone we got a postcard from the bus driver, thanking her for all her help and telling her she can bring the card to the office for a reward. WTH? She made a mess on the bus! She was told to help clean up the bus to make up for the bus driver having to clean up the icing from her cupcakes! All her help was her consequence for breaking the rule on eating food on the bus and making the mess! Why would they 'reward' her for doing what she is supposed to do anyways? I'm proud that SD worked at making it right, but does that mean she's entitled to a 'reward'? I don't think so and I don't get how the school officials think. So, I understand the frustration with the schools that don't seem to want to expect kids to be responsible for their actions. I just don't get it.

I think planting now is likely to be best. I live in a different kind of climate from yours with probably less sharp winter cold than you have, but still zone 8 with snowy winters and hot dry summers. If you plant now your rose will have a chance to get established before the summer heat arrives. In my experience even tender roses are not bothered by temperatures in the teens (though during our biggest cold snap in recent years we had a foot of snow on the ground). The biggest danger, I guess, would be a hard freeze with bare ground. If you give your rose a good mulch (organic matter that doesn't compact down and not touching the trunk of the rose) and give it some protection in the event of sharp cold with no snow, I think it will do fine. I took the hint. These are all last year picture, and we have since changed over to solar path lights, we have changed to creek rock for the edging around everthing (can you say over kill) and we have used the color enhanced mulch in a dark brown to match the house. When it gets pretty this year I will take more picture.

Thanks guys, I love working in my flower beds. I change them around every few years, because it seems like, even if if I have some things I really like, after a while I don't really appreciate them so much, so I change things up. To the outside world it may look like a huge hodge podge, but it is my stress release.

The hostas on the left side of the picture have all been changed over to monkey grass this year, because that area is in the full sun, the hostas look great in the spring but as summer drones on they start looking pretty bad and the monkey grass just looks beautiful all season. After a couple of years it will be huge and gorgeous.

How absolutely beautiful; I envy your talent!

Here in New England the generally-accepted "rule" is to wait until Memorial Day to be safe. :-(

Just planted the front walkway. Want to finish the bit that is in the shade most of the day today.

Then I have to tackle the back yard and cut down vines and shrubs coming into the yard from the neighbors. Tomatoes need to be put in this month too.

The blue stuff is Salvia, I don't know what variation though.
I have several flower beds, and they are all trial and error and works in progress, I know very little about flowers so I am learning as I go. I always have a work in progress.
Due to the recent ice storm we lost a couple of beautiful pines in our back yard. Looks like a new place for a bench and a flower bed.

gorgeous Sue!! I split my hostas yesterday before the rain came...normally I start planting my annuals by the middle of April...it's gonna be closer to May 1st this year...our yard is mostly natural and real sloppy right now so I do lots of containers on our deck and call it a day!
