The stories used to freak me out a little bit but I really haven't heard anything about the Bermuda triangle in years.

I think there can be a problem there, but not from UFO's. I think there might be a magnetic field there that used to distrupt the airplane's intruments.

yard is looking good, i have lots of one kind of weed though, im pretty sure it was in with the grass seed, but I have no proof of it other than its everywhere i planted the grass seed. the leafs look almost like poison ivy, but its growing on an upright stem and the leafs are opposite. They have a leaf on each side of the stem, and a new set of leaves about every inch up the stem. the weed is about 1.5 inches but I have seen them hit about 4-5 inches in the areas I have not mown.

So if we were to do a 1.5 story with the master on the main level, where would you put that, behind the garage then? My thought process would be to first determine priority of room placement in the most ideal location for the use of the room and then if conflicts between room placement develop then rank by how much time is spent and how time is used for each room as well as the importance of that use compared to the importance of the uses for the other rooms. If watching the sunrise from your bed pays off with more enjoyment than having the sunrise and morning sun striking your kitchen, then plan accordingly. For instance, do you plan on using your master suite as a parental get-away from the kids, using it during the day or will your non-sleeping uses be restricted to evenings only, meaning that any views from the rooms would be lost to the darkness of the night? If the views are not important, I'd bury the master suite near the garage in the above sketch. If however, views and day time use are important, then I'd move the master to the east/south/west walls, perhaps right off the entry or in the back off of the kitchen. I'm not necessarily saying to put the master off the entry or off the kitchen, though you could, I'm just using these as examples that reference the above sketch. The way I'm designing my own home is to use a very self-reflective process which tries to understand how I actually live my life rather than trying to contort my lifestyle into architectural trends which presuppose how people SHOULD live their lives. So, to continue on the questioning, why exactly do you appreciate a main-floor master? Is it so that you can avoid stairs? Is it so that you can hear the comings and goings of the kids at night as they try to leave the house, is it because you don't want the kids too near your bedroom, is it because you don't want noise transmission from the master to be easily heard by the kids, and so on? Once you can articulate to yourself why you want something then you can find the best solution for your plan, rather than adopting a cookie-cutter approach. For instance, what I found amusing in some plans was a main floor master with a child's bedroom directly over it on the 2nd. Now, to me, if the goal was to reduce noise transmission from either the child's room to the parent's room or vice versa, the separation by floor, while having intuitive appeal, would fail to achieve the mission. The example I used in an earlier comment was to have a master suite separated by a stairway corridor AND a children's hallway which together create a 7'-8' dead zone, possibly with some walls other than the master and child's bedroom walls also added in between. There are no common walls shared, there is a huge dead zone in between and the goal of reducing noise transmission is, I believe, better served than a downstairs master with an upstairs child's bedroom directly over top, sharing common ceiling/floor as well as sound transmission paths down the walls. Of course, if sound transmission has nothing to do with the appeal of a downstairs master suite, then what I've sketched out is a solution to a problem which doesn't exist, or doesn't matter. I was thinking the master/office space on one side and then the kitchen, dining, great room on the other. That makes sense to me. Would you move the great room from the center of the house below to the front where the dining study is and move the study to where the great room is? Lots of configurations can make sense, but they must make sense in relation to how you envision yourself using the space and the particulars of your lifestyle and preferences. I'd say grab some graph paper, or even blank paper, and just block out the rooms and see how they interplay with each other, note how you foresee traffic patterns within and throughout the space, imagine daily routines taking place within the space. Once you have an idea of how you live, or how you want to live in the new space, then get the graph paper and try to get a better handle on size and furniture placement, and traffic patterns and by the end of this process you should have a very good understanding of how you want the space to be configured. I did the same for my house and this has resulted in me doing away with a formal living room from the now traditional LR/FR combo pack and reallocating the space elsewhere in the home, such as combining the entry with the LR space in order to create a larger sense of space/volume, has led me to create a larger kitchen than would be warranted in relation to the size of the informal living room, has led me to other design changes that likely violate what trained architects use as benchmarks for how homes should be designed. Thank you for the garage tip also - I thought 24x24 was rather large? We will be getting an oversize door for sure. I'd say measure your cars, block out a 24 x 24 space on your lawn, use cardboard boxes or something else to fill the space of your cars, then throw in the other junk you're likely to store alongside the walls of the garage, and see how much space you actually need. Try to get out of your car and see if the door bangs the wall or the other car. A 24 x 24 garage is actually pretty good considering that many designed give a 20 x 23 or something similarly ridiculous.

I've only had one very negative experience that scared the crap out of me. When I was a teenager, my friends and I were interested in a "darker" subculture and used to hang out in cemeteries and things like that. One night, we were at my house playing with the Ouija board. I know better now, and I won't touch them, but when you're 16 you don't really consider the consequences. We didn't really experience anything during the game because we were laughing and having fun with it. But later that night, after my friends left, I went to bed and woke up to a visitor at the foot of my bed. My room was dark, but this thing was the complete absence of light. It was about 7 feet tall, solid and black as sin. Just standing there at the foot of my bed staring at me. My two cats were sleeping on my bed and they both jumped up, hissing and ran for the closed door and clawed desperately at it trying to get out. I sat straight up and screamed, and at that moment it sort of dissolved into glitter and then shot under my bed. Upon further reflection, I think I invited something very negative into my house and I was relieved to move out soon after. To counter that, after my mom died, I had a few pleasant experiences. My mom wore the same perfume her entire life so I immediately associate it with her. I also collect perfumes and she knows I have a huge collection. A few weeks after she died, I noticed a small bottle of her perfume on the floor so I absently put it on a dresser in the guest room. The next day, I went in there and the perfume was on the floor again. I didn't think much of it assuming the cats had knocked it down so I put it back up, and then the next day, it was on the floor again. I thought this was really strange, so then I put it back up, right in the middle so it couldn't accidentally fall off and the cats couldn't easily knock it off, and put a bottle of my perfume right next to it. And then the next day, I come into the room and both bottles are on the floor. Now, it could have been the cats but I doubt it. Just something fun and it made me smile. Another really strange thing that happened was a few months ago, I really wanted to relocate from Boston to California. But it meant leaving a good job, leaving my apartment and leaving my friends, and I was really struggling with whether it was the right move for me or not. And I landed an interview with a company out in California, and while I was doing some internet research on the company, I Googled the company name and one of the people who works there and the 3rd result that popped up was my mom's name, which is pretty unique and not at all related to any of the search terms. I just thought it was really cool and I interpreted it as a sign. After that, everything fell in place. And now I'm here in California. :)

Thank you. What I didn't mention was that when we walked into the shelter we said we were interested in seeing Jesse (the shelter had named him). They gave us the oddest look and said "are you sure you mean Jesse?" We said yep. I didn't walk back but DH did. He said Jesse was terrified and hiding behind the igloo dog house that was in the pen with him. His tail was tucked and he was growling. The shelter sat on a very busy country highway and with the combination of the barking dogs and the trucks, it was really noisy. Dh didn't like the way the worker was approaching the dog, thought she was actually scaring him more, so he took the glove from her and asked her if she had any treats to offer. She actually left him there in the pen with the dog. After she left DH just grabbed him and brought him out. Once we got a leash on him we walked him out to a quieter place and sat with him. He would barely lift his belly off the ground when he walked, everything startled him, but he let me rub and pet him everywhere. Even down between his toes. I knew he would be okay once away from there and NO WAY was DH going to be able to put him back in that cage and walk away. We took him home and bathed, him and loved on him and by bed time that night he was a completely different dog. He still jumped at everything, he obviously had not been socialized at all and he had spent months at that shelter. It's been five years and he is an amazing dog. He is so sensitive to our emotions. Sometimes I swear he knows what I'm thinking. LOVE HIM!! All of our pets have been rescues. We had our beloved Abby put down a couple years ago and she had been a special needs rescue also, but Jesse really feels like a save to me. Maybe Reggie brought us to him. Who knows. Sorry this got so long. I just love sharing this story.

I'm not sure if I believe or not, but it sure is fun to read and hear the stories. I do know there is no way you would get me on a boat or plane that goes over the B. triangle. Dottie

I absolutely believe there is something to the Bermuda triangle....but I think it is all natural and comes from the core of the earth...as in a magnetic pull and underwater gasses.

I think there is something that happens in that area, but I don't believe in UFOs.

Don't know, but I remember as a kid/teenager being facinated with stories about it. I don't believe it has anything to do with UFOs, though.

I do believe in the Loch Ness monster, too SamKaren, especially after that Japanese fishing vessel pulled something just like it up out of the ocean.

I think there is a scientific reason for things that happen at the Bermuda Triangle. I believe the majority of the stories are eal.

lol Judy. I'm from Bermuda and used to post as Longtail.

Nah, I don't believe in it. It extends over quite a bit of area and there's been hardly any disappearances compared to years ago. Else for instruments going haywire, it could have been the electromagnetic forces that's probably eased now.

Some say that it is the entrance to the underworld, or Atlantis.

We sit on top of a volcano and there is an area of water that is surrounded by land and they say that no one has ever reached the bottom. Strange fish always come up from down there too.

I feel safe travelling across it but what I don't like is the Gulf Stream. It carries bad weather and is alway turburlent.

LOL. I'm with dotmom. Whatever the mystery, count me OUT of the test group! There are a lot of phenomenon in the world and I find almost all of them fascinating, but my mind is not made up on the truth behind them. I am in the "natural causes" camp, though, believing that there is much more to our planet and solar system than we know. Lots of mysteries to figure out, lots of explaining to do yet.

My 15 y/o DS will stop whatever he's doing to watch a show or read an article about Big Foot/Sasquatch. He is fascinated and convinced there is "something" out there. He's not just in the "maybe" camp, he is sure of it and loves to hear stories about it.

I think there's something going on in the Bermuda Triangle, we just don't have the science to measure it. Five hundred years from now the truth will be known.

stephanie_in_ga, tell you son about www.bfro.net. It's the Bigfoot Research Organization website, and you can look up sightings and encounters by your state or county. I live in an area with a high amount of Sasquatch sightings. The website has stories from hunters, hikers, Forest Services workers, etc. I definitely believe too, I don't think thousands and thousands of people all hallucinated the same thing.

Year ago I was totally fascinated by the Bermuda (Devil's) Triangle. I decided back then if I developed a terminal disease and had only a few days to live, I wanted to fly through the triangle and disappear into the unknown.

Now, many years later, I've developed a shellfish allergy and decided to scrap the devil's triangle adventure and instead, I would order broiled lobster tail with drawn butter, scampi and crab legs. :-)

Yep, I am Zeetera...and nickel (to a degree) and can't wear sunscreen (or makeup with sunscreen) on my face without a painful day of burning, watery eyes.

I can however, successfully wear nail polish that is formaldehyde/toluene free and more and more manufacturers are offering it. And I can wear minerals makeup with sunscreen without any problems.

I don't believe the stories about the Bermuda Triangle. It's a very heavily travelled area that does not have a disproportionate amount of problems compared to the rest of the ocean (taking the amount o traffic into consideration). Many of the stories about it have been exaggerated, or completely debunked. I would volunteer to be in a test group without giving it any thought.

Nope. Don't believe in the Bermuda triangle jinx.

But there are other factors that seem benign, but can become dangerous very quickly. For one, there are a lot of boats and private planes in the area, and that will up the odds of mishaps. A medium sized sail boat might go out for a days adventure and be totally unpreapred for what may happen. Its a big ocean and a 40 ft sail boat can suddenlty seem too samll in a squall, or if blown off course, not have enough resources to return. They might find not enougb food and water on board, or that the radio was not maintained and does not work, and no backup radio. Some 'sailors' are lost if they loose sight of land.

Small planes are easily lost due to any number of factors. Around where I live, we are land locked, but at least twice a year, a private plane either crashes or force lands in untoward places. The accident is duly noted and life goes on - no big deal. But if the same event happened over water, it can become a big mystery because no one finds any pieces and can not determine what happened.

Just last summer, the Coast Guard fished out a couple of people who ditched a small plane in Lake Michigan. The crash was known immediately because it was seen by a number of radars of airports and the Coast Guard. A life boat was dropped within 15 minutes, and the Coast Guard rated it a close call, because they say 15 minutes is the survival limit in that water. Lake Michigan is quite cold even in summer, once away from shore.

What's one common cause for dropping an airplane in Lake Michigan? Its running out of fuel!
