New dog.....questions

DD is a little worried. She's taken in a giveaway Doxie. He was from a family of 3 that is splitting up and getting a divorce. Diesel has been around a little 5 year old girl.

DD has 2 boys, 8 and 3 1/2. They are all happy to have the dog. They met someone an hour and half from their home to pick him up sight unseen yesterday afternoon. He's a beauty and his owner assured DD he's a wonderful dog.

Anyway, he is pretty skittish, understandably. A tough day yesterday for him. He hasn't ate yet as of this morning. He is going outside to potty, she has a huge fenced in backyard, last night at 11pm he was barked at by the neighbors husky, he actually jumped it scared him so bad!

He came with his kennel, which the man said Diesel loves to lay in. This morning the oldest DGS reached in to pet him and he bit him. He did have his chew bone and a squeeky toy in there with him. Last night shortly after getting him home he bit the oldest also. I guess DGS moved too fast and didn't let him sniff his hand first.

Diesel is a year and a half old. The boys have been told not to reach in and bother him in his kennel and while he eats just incase he is the same way.

So my questions are:

1 Any suggestions for anything that will make this transition easier for Diesel?

DD knows it will take time for him to be familiar with the home and them but wants him to feel at ease and happy.

2 He will not be allowed to bite, she let him by with it figuring its the first 24 hours and she knows he is frightened and its reflex when he is scared. How to handle it if it keeps up?

3 How long to wait for him to eat? He is drinking and pottying. She is a little concerned but knows it hasn't been 24 hours yet.
