Can Insinkerator's Cover Control Adapter be used w/ any disposer?

Hi all, I'm wondering if any of you have used InSinkErator's CCA-00 Cover Control Adapter, an accessory that sells for $35 that transforms a standard continuous-feed disposer into a batch-feed disposer (operated by inserting the drain cover and twisting it). It looks like this:

Insinkerator sells an "Evolution Cover Control" disposer with this preinstalled, but they're expensive (about $250); the adaptor sells for as little as $35 online though. ISE "will only warranty the Cover Control Adaptor when it's installed on Evolution Series disposers", the least expensive (the Evolution Compact) of which costs $170.

That means the Evolution Compact and the CCA-00 adapter together are about $60 less than the Evolution Cover Control. But what I'm really wondering is, will the adapter work with any Insinkerator disposer, like the cheap Badger series, if I'm willing to forsake the (6-year) warranty? Or with the many other brands of disposers that are made by the same company (Kenmore, Whirlpool/Maytag/Kitchenaid, etc.)?

How about disposers made by the only other major supplier of these, Waste King (which makes GE, Sinkmaster, and others)? I already own an uninstalled GE and would rather not have to buy a new disposer in order to get batch feed.

If anyone's curious, I'm going with batch feed because it'a a basement installation and running wiring from a wall switch would involve cutting through cinder blocks, which I'd rather avoid. I could go with an air switch (even more expensive than the Cover Control Adapter, and I'd have to drill a hole in the sink) or a lame undercounter or surface-mount switch, but a batch-feed disposer is the most elegant solution here.

Whoever says disposals are bad for septic systems does not know what they are talking about. Garage disposals in our area are pretty much a standard feature in all homes, both urban and rural. I grew up with one and my dad has never had a septic issues in 40 years of living there. We do clean the plates off to prevent as much as possible from going into our septic but overall food does not hurt septics as long as you are not piling everything you can down them. Its actually helpful having some food. You want a lot of bacteria in your septic which eats away both human and food waste. Food can help create bacteria in the system. You do not want to put a lot of bleach and other chemicals down the drain which will kill of bacteria. You would not want to do that anyways even if your are not on septic. Anything that bacteria does not degrade in the septic will settle to the bottom of the tank. Thats why ever couple of years you have your septic pumped anyways. As far as getting items out of it, there have been very few times I have ever had to reach down into the disposal. I got my hands dirty more often by cleaning out the traps of the drains that did not have disposals. I visted homes that did not have disposals and when I helped clean up after large meals, I know I would never want to live without a garbage disposal.

Eleeny - what a fabulous find in Mountain Plumbing! I didn't think anyone other than Waste King and Insinkerator made batch feeds anymore. Furthermore, Waste King moved their manufacturing from US to China a couple of years ago, and I am concerned that their quality isn't what my older Waste King is which was from their factory in the U.S. Also, I noticed Mountain Plumbing is offering a warranty on their batch feed similar to Waste King's - an in-home lifetime warranty (but you must provide the original receipt), which is what I'd always found impressive about Waste King. Pricing seems competitive too, given that it's a 1 hp. I am linking below to Quality Bath's website; they're an authorized dealer, and also have a 110% price guaranty. It looks large. Make sure you have room for it under your sink whereby its outlet is higher than the plumbing. Ca_mom - in answer to your question, sometimes I keep the stopper either on the back corner of my sink, or in the sink. But most of the time it's in its place in the drain. Note that the stopper, when not turning the disposer on and off, acts like any other drain stopper. You can turn it so that it allows water to flow down the drain, while straining any large items from going down the drain, or give a half-turn to the stopper which will tighten it in the drain so that it stops the water if you want to fill the sink. Before deciding on a batch feed disposer, you need to check one critical bit of plumbing configuration. Batch feed disposers are taller and therefore hang down lower under the sink than a typical switched (air-switch or wall-switch) disposer. Because of this, the drain outlet on the disposer is also lower. It is critical that the outlet on the disposer be higher than the drain line opening on the wall at the back of your cabinet. If it isn't, the disposer will not drain properly, and you will always have water sitting in the bottom of the grind chamber of your disposer. This will significantly shorten the life of any disposer and could result in rotting food debris remaining in the bottom of the disposer. CHECK YOUR DIMENSIONS CAREFULLY. Be sure that the drain outlet on the disposer will be above the height of the drain outlet on the back wall of your cabinet. I really like batch feed disposers, but if a batch feed disposer doesn't work because of your plumbing configuration, then you definitely want a disposer with a wall switch or an air switch. Having to deal with a switch under the sink is a minor nuisance, but over time, a major annoyance. You don't want to go there. Personally, I prefer a wall switch, but there are many people on this forum who swear by the air switch arrangement. Just keep in mind that an air switch means one more thing on your sink deck that you will need to wipe around as you clean up around the sink.

OneRidgeOff - Well for me, it's either garbage disposal or throwing it out in the trash since I have no place to compost nor would I have anything to do with the compost - might as well recommend my getting an outhouse for my balcony :-) ETA - I know you weren't recommending that I have a compost heap but merely letting the poster know that composting was not an option :-) I feel lucky to have carved out just enough space for a trash roll out below the sink when I finish my remodel. I have a trash can now in my current galley (or did before my demo started this week - Hurray!!! but that was horrendously inconvenient because the only place for it was in front of my only cabinet with drawers so I had to move it every time I needed something from the drawers. :-( Paper/plastic and other recyclables I carry down to the lobby level where there is a recycling dumpster. Thanks for the recommendations to all. I have read that Waste King makes a good disposal but I have had Insinkerators for as long as I could install (they were prohibited in New York City until fairly recently) and they performed extremely well and lasted so why potentially hex myself by changing :-)
