How far away from the wall (stud) is the toilet flange on a new install?

The normal distance to the center of the toilet flange/drain is 12" from the finished rear wall.

12" is "standard" but other distances are possible depending on the setup. As noted above, 12" is from the finished wall, not the stud. If you are drywalling, you will need to add in the thickness of that to the 12" if you are measuring from the stud. eg 1/2" drywall + 12" = 12 1/2" from the stud wall for the center of the flange.

Flanges are slightly different sizes, but the height is usually set by cutting the pipe that mates to the flange a certain distance below the subfloor. When the flange is plumbed, usually there's just the subfloor in place. So you'd add the thickness of the underlayment (if any) to the thickness of the finish flooring, and that's how high above the subfloor you want the toilet flange to be. It's common for a plumber to add a 1/4" or so to that, most prefer the flange to be slightly above the finish flooring than to end up below it. Knowing how high you want the flange above the subfloor, you then cut the waste pipe at the appropriate spot so when it's glued together the flange sits at the proper elevation. If the flange truly sits too high, the best thing to do is cut the waste pipe down and set a new flange. The flange can be cut out from the inside of the pipe, I have a small round blade, about 2" in diameter, that's on a shaft about 12" long. I mount it in a drill, insert it down the pipe, and cut the pipe from the inside. It's not uncommon for the flange bolts to be too long and to have to cut them down to get the caps to fit. That's not a big deal. So...long flange bolts? Not a problem. The flange set so high that the toilet rocks when set upon it? That's bad. I wouldn't accept that. You don't want your wax ring to be crushed to nothing, you'll lose your seal. I'd have the flange reset.

The heat does not travel very far sideways (or laterally, if you prefer). We have never used ours continuously, just for about 3 hours per event to warm up and while everyone showers. 6" is plenty of clearance. I would not hesitate to go to 2" because there is some distance from the toilet flange to the the outer base of the toilet. If you space it 24", your feet will get cold while sitting on the "throne". 12" is too much too. You will regret it if you space that much.

alexashome- It sounds like your plumber is incompetent and/or lazy. Modern toilets typically measure a bit less than 12" from the back of the toilet to the center of the outlet, which is called the offset. If the distance from the wall to the center of the sewer line in your floor was substantially greater than 12" (which is possible in an older home) he should have explained that you would have this problem and offered suggestions. The best option would have been to move the hole in the floor closer to the wall by getting at the sewer line under the floor and re-doing it. If that is not possible, then an offset flange would get the toilet 2" closer to the wall. There are also some toilets that can be ordered with a 14" offset, rather that the standard 12", and the combination of that toilet with an offset flange would allow you to have the toilet up against the wall without redoing the sewer line. As for the toilet not being level, this can be caused by an unlevel floor or a toilet flange that is sitting too high. If your situation is because of the flange, the plumber was negligent in not setting the flange lower (which would been more work and more cost to you). If your situation is because of an unlevel floor, the plumber was negligent in not using plastic shims to level it and prevent rocking. If you decide to follow any of these suggestions, use a new plumber and not the hack who did the work you are unhappy about.

Yes, there is something called an offset flange that would allow you to move the toilet closer to the wall. However, this sometimes can affect the flushing efficiency. Why is your toilet so far from the wall? Standard rough-in is 12" and should result in toilet tank being within about an inch from the wall.

There is not a code standard for the distance from the back wall because the length of the offset is determined by the design of the toilet you intend to install.

The industry standard for the back offset is 12" from the finished wall however toilets are also made with 10" and 14" back sets. You will need to check the installation instruction for the model of toilet you choose.

In addition to the back set, the codes require that you have a minimum side clarance of 15" from the center of the flange to adjacent wall, fixture or appurtenance.

In addition;

The IRC (international Residential Code) requires a minimal frontal clearance of 21" measured from the front lip of the bowl to any wall fixture or appurtenance.

The UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code) requires a 24" frontal clearance.

Lazypup,

You mention the minimum 21' clearance from the front lip of the bowl. Can you translate that into a "rule of thumb" minimum room dimension, and perhaps also a "comfortable" dimension when building an opposing wall? Seems like a 48" total room dimension would usually work for a standard bowl, yet 5' is the visually comfortable minimum. Sound right?

I'm looking at a basement build-out that has the drain rough-in in the slab (from the original construction 8 yrs ago), but basement plans are unavailable, so it's anybody's guess what they were thinking. It is "assumed" by the owner and original design architect to be a two part bathroom, but, since the toilet is (assumed to be) aligned toward the second room tub, it seems there's not enough clearance for a toilet, partition, and then tub on the far side (drain is on far end in that room. Hope that makes some sense.

The normal distance between the wall and the toilet is between 10"-14", or may be determined according to the industry standards.TPH supply is the manufacturer who does well while setuping my bathroom and toilet wall and i no need to care about. Thanks to tph supply.
