Replacing sprinkler pump - DIY

herus

Just moved to this home, the pump (which uses lake water) was replaced a year ago (based on the date code - the only info I can gather) but has already cracked, probably due to poor/no winterizing.

The tech who came out today wants about $900 for a new pump plus labor, plus further labor/parts to determine if the rest of the system is ok.

My neighbor replaced his own pump a few years ago, and may be a resource if I try to do mine, which I am strongly considering.

Is there an existing DIY guide that will take a moderately handy (but inexperienced in this particular thing) person through the process? Also, I see pumps (on eBay for example) that sell for around $200 and seem to be well built. Is the $900 figure just off the wall?
